Chocolate War
Released in VHS Tape by Anchor Bay Entertainment (16 March, 1994)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Keith Gordon
Starring: John Glover and Ilan Mitchell-Smith
Average review score:

A box of Chocolates can cause a war?
Keith Gordon's film of Robert Cormier's "The Chocolate War" is in the long standing tradition of boys school movies like "Another Country" but minus the wit and sophistication. In fact this is a movie that takes itself much too seriously especially as personified in the character of Archie as played by Wallace Langham (late of TV's Veronica's Web). Archie is the brains of a society of thugs in sport coats called the Vigils. The Vigils have gained power by intimidating their fellow students as well as the faculty. They meet their match in the person of Jerry Renault (Ilan Mitchell-Smith)who refuses to participate in a school chocolate sale. It is never quite clear why he continues his chocolate boycott after following a Vigils edict to do so for 10 days. Mitchell-Smith underplays most of his scenes and his face shows almost no emotion except when he is dreaming of his recently deceased mother and his now alcoholic father. John Glover lords over the school as Brother Leon who makes a pact with the Vigils to sell 20,000 boxes of chocolates so he can be promoted to head of the school. The entire cast takes this all very seriously and we are force fed grand concepts like so many chocolate bon-bons shoved down our throats: the individual vs the majority, brute force vs using your intellect, standing by your friends in times of conflict. John Glover wins the BIG Ham award though, but it's a tough call with Wallace Langham coming in a close second. If you must see a boys school film buy "Another Country" as the English do this thing a lot better than we Americans (ergo "The Skulls"). God Save the Queen!

Great Movie based on the Book.
This movie follows the book very closely. The ending is just a bit different, but it's the same overall theme as in the book. the main character Jerry Renualt attends a Catholic school, Were he deals with an upscale gang called the vigils, who run the show. The movie is almost a satire but not quite, it keeps its realism and stays believeable. Often Novals of this sort do not make very good movies but this is an exception.

Wow, the most accurate depiction of any book I have read
This movie is based on a book that I have read on many occasions. As much as hate I when books that enjoy become films, this film is an exception to my normal beliefs. I have found that this film depicts all the characters in ways that are true to the original story. Having seen the movie years after having read the story I have that it brings back all the memories and images that I remember from the novel of the Vigils and Chocolate Sale. I would have to say this is the most accurate dipiction of any story that I have ever read.

Going Overboard
Released in VHS Tape by Vidmark/Trimark (23 March, 1999)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Valerie Breiman
Starring: Adam Sandler and Billy Zane
At the beginning of this no-budget cheapie, Adam Sandler tells us this is a "loosely thrown together story" built around free access to a cruise ship and "a lot of good-looking women." So they get an A for truth in advertising. Sandler (very green in his first feature film) plays Shecky Moskowitz, a cruise ship waiter with dreams of being a standup comedian. At one point, General Manuel Noriega sends some goons to take over the ship. And there's a lot of voluptuous women hanging around in bikinis. So much for the plot. Sold as a wacky sex comedy, Going Overboard is more of a funny-nose-and-glasses movie, desperately trying anything for a laugh. Sandler's trademark being-funny-by-being-unfunny hadn't started to click yet. Only Billy Zane (as a sort of long-suffering-Jewish-grandmother-ish King Neptune) and Adam Rifkin (as a self-absorbed, mossy-toothed heavy metal star) seem to have any comic timing. A number of the supporting cast would go on to play roles in other, better Adam Sandler movies. Look fast for Billy Bob Thornton(!), appearing here as "Dave the heckler." --Geof Miller

Is this a "Film School" Project? -- Sandler Gets an "F"
I always considered myself a fan of Adam Sandler's work, especially his original comedy material. This film is a sad attempt at being funny, while desperately trying to make a statement. The "f" word is thrown around like it's in the top 5 of the Englsh vocabulary. A main character's hacking giggle becomes an annoying pain in your ears. The gratuitous T&A scenes, along with borderline X-rated making out become tiresome. The lack of a general storyline wrap up the verdict: This "high school film project" needs a major do-over. Until then the grade is a solid "F". Not even college students are thaaaat desperate for a cheezy laugh. Sandler has hit bottom with this one. Toss this bomb overboard and forget it!

The Worst Movie I Ever Wasted Time Watching
Fellow Adam Sandler Fans,

I bought this DVD at Walmart for $5.88 thinking "Wow, an Adam Sandler Movie I haven't seen." Last night I watched this 90 minute piece of garbage and came away with the following conclusions:

1) Adam Sandler must have had very little talent before he came to Saturday Night Live if this movie is any indication of Sandler's real talent;

2) Adam Sandler really should pull all copies from distribution of this movie since this movie degrades any and all other works by Adam Sandler;

3) The producers of this movie must have been truly desparate for money to have released this piece of trash.

Now about the movie. It claims to be a movie about a cruise ship waiter (Adam Sandler) wanting to be a stand-up comedian. He is jealous of the mediocre comedian whose audience is a bunch of so-so beauty peagent contestants.

Needless to say that Adam Sandler displays zero talent in this movie. There are none of his Chanukah songs. There are none of singing Italian skits. He doesn't make a single funny joke and when he hits on the not-so-hot chicks in the movie his lines are blah. There are a few fantasy scenes where the women are decent looking (but get yourself a copy Maxim and you will be far better off).

There is only one redeeming scene in this whole worthless movie. The house comedian locks himself in a bathroom (to barf) and pleads with God to open the locked door after having spent what appears many hours locked up in that tiny closet-size room. Upon the door magically openning, the comedian proclaims, "F&*^, I don't believe in God, I'm an athiest."

There was an uneventful cameo appearance of Milton Berle and there are some quality actors and actresses in this movie with all their performances wasted.

I was hoping that this movie would show the actual goings on of a cruise ship, but that also wasn't the case. None of the scenes give a hint of a operational ship on a cruise in the Caribbean. The ship actually looks like it was decommisioned in the 1960's with rust on the hull and it didn't even have a functional dining hall. To Adam's credit, he admits that the producer had this empty cruise ship available to make this movie - big deal!

In conclusion, this is the worst waste of time I ever spent watching a movie.

An interesting effort...
ok... it's true...if you go into this movie expecting anything spectacular... than you will be dissapointed... but it was very clear that they weren't making it to be a great movie... it had it's entertaining moments... one liners... covers by Sandler... an interesting parody-type metal band frontman... the best part about this movie... is that you can actually see where the talent started out... it's actually cool to see how Sandler evolved... and the acting in the movie was surprisingly great... I'm surprised I haven't seen more of the actors in other movies... bottom line... it's pretty good for a bad movie... I paid six bucks for it... I spend more than that on Dr Pepper in a day...

Two wasted hours I will never get back
My daughter rented this movie last night for us to watch
and I must say that this is truly the worst movie I have
seen in maybe a decade.
The script was implausible, and that's being generous.
I'm so glad we did not pay good money in the theater to see
this movie,I would have ask for a refund. This was a waste of time, I lost two hours I'll never get back.
I rate this movie ZERO stars.

Have to Give This One a Second Try
The first time that I saw this movie on video, I was disappointed and told my 'Nicholson fan' friends so. Since the ending is a surprise, when I watched it again I saw the whole storyline in a different light. I actually found myself watching it several more times to catch more and more of the layers and details.

As annoying as Nicholson was in this movie, one cannot take his character [Buddy Rydel] at face value. When you consider the ending and go back over all his dialogue, you begin to see that he was very up front and truthful about most everything he told Dave (Sandler). I later became convinced of the sincerity of Buddy (Nicholson) in other situations--like provoking Dave with Galaxia. If you watch this movie more than once you put on different lenses and see from a different vantage point.

I agree with other reviewers--the first viewing may have you despising Nicholson and giving a thumbs down to the film. I did at first. Now it grew on me to be one of my favorites..

One of my favorite characters in this movie was Chuck. I love his wild looks, and many of his lines are my favorites... "no more fudgicles" and "you're not ready" - the Granada stuff, etc.

WAs Buddy just being outrageously disgusting and perverse when he flipped off rival "Linda's best friend" ...? - I think not. If you watch the film with a different paradigm, you can see that Buddy was truly doing "his work", and that included not only protecting Dave (Sandler), but having the innate manly ability to discern an enemy to Sandler and "the cause" he's undertaken to help.

There are even a couple of times when Nicholson is even impressed with how his student [Sandler] fared during the process...in my opinion when he brought "the girls" to the club (strong move) and also when he dealt with his childhood nemesis who had become a monk. That has to be the funniest scene in the movie!

If you have ever known a nice guy with implosive anger, this will really strike a chord. If you have ever sat in a group counseling session (like 12 step), then you will laugh noddingly.

Anger Management. At first I didn't like it. Watched it some more, and I'm still seeing new things in it. I really like it a lot.

Jack Nicholson - annoying and dopey OR masterful? Nicholson is not going to (at this stage in his career and life) allow himself to be in a dud movie. I say that this one has some layers to mine for gold...

Hope you will give it another try!

Hilarious!
Sandler and Nicholson are quite a hilarious duo in this comedy! This movie is definitely for the adult, there is some bad language and vulgar scenes. But what movie doesn't have that anymore? I laughed myself silly! This is one the best movies I have seen lately! I highly reccommend it for anyone with a funny bone.
