Passion Fish
Released in VHS Tape by Columbia/Tristar Studios (07 April, 1998)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: John Sayles
Starring: Mary McDonnell, Alfre Woodard, and Angela Bassett
An intelligent and potent drama about taking life's second chances when they come, Passion Fish finds director John Sayles (Matewan, Lone Star) once again providing a strong cast of actors with a smart, literate screenplay to produce an entertaining and thought-provoking film. Mary McDonnell (Dances with Wolves, Grand Canyon) plays a soap-opera actress paralyzed in a car accident, who returns to the small town on the Louisiana bayou where she grew up to hide. But the hiring of a physical therapist with a tortured past (Alfre Woodard), and the sometimes antagonistic bond formed between them, allows the woman to try and rehabilitate herself and seize the opportunities that life still has to offer. With some great traditional Cajun music and the picturesque bayou as a backdrop, Passion Fish is an engaging yarn not to be missed. --Robert Lane
Average review score:

Beautiful Bayou.
In this current era of moviemaking, it's rare than an idea as soft, as pure as Passion Fish, will be given an opportunity to be made. Thankfully John Sayles has the ability to circumvent the 'by-committee' filmmaking which would have ultimately turned this wonderful little film into God know's what.

Mary McDonnell will never be better-she is brilliant, than in her portrayal of May-Alice Culhane (for which she was Oscar-nominated), the once-on-top Soap Opera star to whom tragedy has taken the use of her legs, and forced a re-evaluation of her life.

Alfre Woodard, as the hired home-care worker/nurse Chantelle provides the perfect complement as both these women find more of themselves through each other, then they might ever have found otherwise. Again, Ms. Woodard has rarely disappointed.

The early montage of health-care applicants is clever and funny. And John Sayles always is able to find brilliance in his supporting cast: notably Vondie Curtis-Hall, Leo Burmester, and David Strathairn, as well as a small role early in the career of Angela Bassett.

Sayles' script was also nominated for an Academy Award.

Modern Classic
Films like Passion Fish remind me that film can be art. With intelligent writing and direction by John Sayles, Passion Fish explores the friendship and bond between an unlikely and reluctant duo: a soap opera actress paralyzed in a car accident (brilliantly performed by Oscar nominated MARY McDONNELL) and her hired nurse with demons of her own (the wonderful, and shamlessly Oscar overlooked ALFRE WOODARD). This movie beautifully explores how two very independent women deal with their dependence on each other. With a strong supporting cast headed by DAVID STRAITHARN, Passion Fish is an absolute gem. The "anal probe" monologue is worth the price of admission alone!

Sayles Greatest?
An almost perfect drama, by turns funny and heartbreaking. Sayles avoids his usual tendency to try and tell too many stories at once, instead keeping the action focused on the female leads (whose performances I cannot praise enough.) Sayles uses a technique of unfolding the narrative in a series of vignettes (most shorter than one minute) keeps the movie solidly on track, and maintains the interest of the viewer throughout.

The Rosa Parks Story
Released in VHS Tape by Xenon Entertainment (21 January, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: Julie Dash
Average review score:

Engaging.
Most everyone knows about Rosa Park's show of courage that helped spark the civil-rights movement, but few will probably know of the experiences in her formative years that helped shape her opinions and influenced her character. The Rosa Parks Story reveals the woman behind the legend. Not only is this gripping viewing, but would be of great educational benefit to a younger audience who may not be so familiar with this important period of 20th century history. Angela Bassett, in the starring role, is excellent - she emanates a warmth but also a gracful sort of stoicism that is entirely captivating. Also of interest is Rosa's relationship with her husband, who, at first was unapproving of her association with the NAACP and of her desire to bring about justice. His feelings, of course change, and there is quite a moving sequence in which this is illuminated.
On the whole, this movie is well worth investigating.

Amazing DVD & Special Features!
Not only was Rosa Parks a great movie, the whole DVD was fantastic. I especially appreciated the Civil Rights Timeline feature. It is one of the few special features I have seen which was really worth looking at, rather than the typical self promotion DVDs usually contain.

A wonderful film
Rosa Parks, the movie, was very well made. The acting, by all, was excellent and I found it refreshing to find that the relationship between Rosa and her husband to be the centerpiece of this drama. Movies too often show people who are said to be in love and spend all of their time groping each other without passion. The last 5 minutes of this film wherein Rosa's husband "reminds himself" just how lucky he is priceless. A civil rights lesson and a lesson is humanity all in one film.

Boyz 'N the Hood
Released in VHS Tape by Columbia/Tristar Studios (11 January, 1995)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: John Singleton
Starring: Laurence Fishburne and Cuba Gooding Jr.
John Singleton, at the age of 23, was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for his debut film, Boyz N the Hood. The film stars Laurence Fishburne, Angela Basset, Ice Cube, and Academy Award-winning actor Cuba Gooding Jr. in his first starring role in a feature film. Gooding plays Tre Styles, a teenager growing up in South Central Los Angeles. His father, Furious (Fishburne), is divorced and living away from Tre and his mother (Basset), but he's still involved in Tre's upbringing, teaching him the values of right and wrong and responsibility. Meanwhile, Tre's childhood buddies Ricky (Morris Chestnut) and Doughboy (Ice Cube) are living their lives in terms of the epidemic of violence and poverty that has plagued their neighborhood. Ricky, a talented football player, strives to get a full athletic scholarship to college. If only his SAT scores were higher. Doughboy lives a life full of crime but still remains true to his friends. The obstacles that these three young men come across result in dire consequences, devastatingly avoidable and inevitable at the same time. Boyz N the Hood is a landmark film beyond its commercial success, presenting a portrait of South Central in the late '80s and early '90s as painted by Singleton (who grew up in that neighborhood), achieving accuracy and dramatic resonance in this story of at-risk youth. --Shannon Gee

A true modern day epic , sweeping and truthful.
In, hollwood we see epics like Ben Hur and The Godfather to Goodfellas. We consider these epic movies because they sweep us into a storyline full of dramatic tones. What makes an epic shine a good storyline and charachters that you can understand and relate to and care for.Is this Boyz N The Hood yes it is and much much more, this movie is a true modern day epic and truly sweeping an incredible storyline that will keep you involved.it's a very realistic masterpeice and frank look into the life of inner city youth and the battleground they must deal with everyday not on a war zone but in there own neighborhoods.

Powerhouse performances by Cuba Gooding Jr. and Ice Cube. This movie tells us what living in this world is today and the battles you must fight not only for yourself but for the ones you love.

A orignal film powerful and very real as well as touching and sad.Admist all the violence ,chaos of a war torn Los Angeles.A heartfelt film and the

unfortunate truth very real.

One of the Most Powerful Films Ever.
Boyz N the Hood was and still is one of the most powerful movies I've ever seen. Shot entirely in South Central LA to present the movie as realistic as possible. The movie debuted in theater back in 1991 and had an immediate impact on almost everyone who viewed it.

The story about 3 friends growing up in the hood in South Central LA. Each one with their own individual struggle and goals in life. Doughboy (Ice Cube) ,who is a drug dealer, has been in and out of trouble throughout his young life and seems to be happy with his surroundings. Doughboy's brother Ricky (Morris Chestnut) a teenage father with bright hopes and aspirations of becoming an NFL football player ; and Ricky's best friend Tre (Cuba Gooding Jr.) who hopes and dreams of higher education and an escape from the dwelling of the hood. "The Hood" where saying the wrong thing or looking at someone the wrong way can end in death. Tre's father (Larry Fishburne) is a responsible, educated and strict father who makes sure his son stays on the right track in achieving his goals in life. Teaching him about responsibility and keeping your cool in adverse situations in order to make a thoughtful descision. Tre's resolve will be tested when tragedy strikes close to home and revenge and murder seem like the only solution.

Fantastic direction by John Singleton and equally impressive acting by all characters are the reason Boyz N the Hood was such a huge success. It was nominated for two acedemy awards (Direction and Screenplay.) ... You have to see this one for yourself you won't be sorry.

Beautiful and Educational
This is an emotional, educational, smart, and realistic movie about one of America¡¯s biggest problems: poverty. For such a wealthy nation America has some serious poverty issues. This film highlights that in a way I have never seen before or after.

I wish more people watched this movie. It could do a lot of good. This is such an educational movie yet it rarely feels like it¡¯s preaching to you. The message is simple. There is too much poverty and thus violence in the ghetto. People just don¡¯t seem to care enough.

I will not mention the plot, see above for that, but must say that Cuba Gooding Junior and Lawrence Fishburne are excellent together. Also, Ice Cube does a great job as an actor, playing a key role. What I will say about the plot is that it is slow-building and then explosive for the last twenty minutes. What I also found interesting were the little scenes mixed in with the plot. There are some great side scenes, for example in one scene Furious (Fishburne) takes his son and his friend to Compton to tell them about gentrification and how people devalue property in the ghetto then buy it up cheap and sell it at a profit.

All in all this is a riveting movie that you must have in your collection.

Malcolm X
Released in VHS Tape by Warner Studios (14 January, 2003)
MPAA Rating: PG-13 (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Spike Lee
Starring: Denzel Washington and Angela Bassett
Just as Do the Right Thing was the capstone of Spike Lee's earlier career, Malcolm X marked the next milestone in the filmmaker's artistic maturity. It seemed everything Lee had done up to that point was to prepare him for this epic biography of America's fiery civil-rights leader, who is superbly played by Oscar-nominated Denzel Washington, from his early days as a zoot-suited hustler known as "Detroit Red" to his spiritual maturity after his pilgrimage to Mecca, as a Black Muslim by the name of El Hajj Malik El Shabazz. Do the Right Thing climaxed with the photographic images of Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King engulfed by flames of rage; Malcolm X explores the genesis and evolution of that rage over Malcolm's lifetime, and how these two great figures--held up to the public as polar-opposites within the African American human rights movement (King for nonviolent civil disobedience, Malcolm for achieving equality "by any means necessary")--were each essential to the agenda of the other. Lee careens from the hedonistic ebullience of Malcolm's early days to the stark despair of prison, from his life-changing conversion to Islam to his emergence as a dynamic political leader--all with an epic sweep and vitality that illuminates personal details as well as political ideology. Angela Bassett is also terrific as Malcolm's wife, Betty Shabazz. --Jim Emerson

A Powerful American Tale
And I firmly believe Malcolm X was a true American. He was passionately, almost obsessively, commited to his ideas. He valued justice. He understood discipline. Yet, he showed undeniable strength and compassion when he realized that some of his beliefs no longer served his spiritual needs. To me, that is the ultimate struggle for ANYONE who tries to call America home.

Spike Lee's treatment of Malcolm X never degenerates into hagiography, race baiting, or worse, Hollywood stereotype. Instead he -- and of course, Denzel Washington's tour de force performance -- presents Malcolm the myth, the martyr and the man. What better dichotomy is there for someone forever enshrined in the pantheon of American fame? I hope we never forget his legacy...

This movie left me energized, angry, confused and hopeful all at the same time. Soon after, I mustered up the courage to read Malcolm's autobiography and was equally moved by it. Thank you, Spike for the inspiration.

A must see film
One of the most brilliant films ever made. Another reviewer, E. Hazell is correct, if maybe even understated in comparing this film with von Sydow's portrayal of Jesus in "The Greatest Story Ever Told" and B. Kingsley in "Ghandi". Without question, the portrayal by Denzel Washington of Malcolm X belongs with these two classic efforts.

The screenplay closely follows Alex Haley's collaboration with Malcolm X on his autobiography, from his early days as a hustler and pimp, to his transformation and his rise to prominence in the Black Muslims and beyond. In so doing, it traces much of the history of the twentieth century African American experience

As another reviewer so inelegantly (and ungrammatically) put it, Malcolm Little sold drugs and women, robbed and lived in the underworld. However, this recognizes far less than half of this compelling and incredible story. This beginning was important only to underscore how far he ultimately came, and leads the viewer to wonder what would have happened had he not been murdered.

Wonderful casting including Angela Bassett as his wife Betty, DelRoy Lindo and particularly Al Freeman Jr. as Elijah Muhammad. It was a rather predictable crime that Spike Lee, Denzel Washington and this film did not dominate the Academy Awards.

A "must see video"
This film directed by Spike Lee, is one of the best movies I've watched. Denzel Washington(Academy Award winner in a different role but sadly missed on this role)depicts the actions, voice and oratorical skills of Malcolm X in an impressive manner.

No wonder the book based on this movie "The Autobiography of Malcom X" by Alex Haley is a best seller and a modern American classic. This film has influenced me so much so that I am compelled to watch any motion picture that includes Malcolm X, Spike Lee or Denzel Washington. So far it's the only film that I never get enough of watching, I still borrow the video again and again.

However, some viewers may find the running time extraordinarily long, nearly three and half hours! The first part of the film which accounts for the early life of Milcolm X, although essential to the background of the story, should have been shortened. Motion picture, unlike the print media is not to narrate every line of the story.

Nonetheless, it is a brilliant and classic work that I've enjoyed very much. It's the closest you can get to understanding the enigmatic and charismatic figure of Malcolm X. Thank you, the makers of this movie. END

Music of the Heart
Released in VHS Tape by Miramax/ Walt Disney Home Video (17 October, 2000)
MPAA Rating: PG (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Wes Craven
Starring: Meryl Streep
Why, you might ask, would Wes Craven direct a conventional biopic about Roberta Guaspari, a divorced mother of two who created an acclaimed music program in East Harlem's troubled school system? After all, Craven built his career on Freddy Krueger and the Scream trilogy, and you won't find razor-tipped gloves or a single drop of blood in Music of the Heart. All Craven has to do is provide a safe working environment for Meryl Streep (who earned an obligatory Oscar nomination), sublimate his deft directorial style, and surrender to the banalities of Pamela Gray's screenplay, which would've played more effectively on cable TV.

To be fair, Music of the Heart (partially inspired by the 1996 documentary Small Wonders) serves its purpose quite nicely. Streep is flawless in a non-showy role, and the story of Guaspari's celebrated violin training program provides the requisite rush of inner-city inspiration. As a fact-based companion to Mr. Holland's Opus, the film is less effective but similarly engaging; you'd have to be cold-hearted to dismiss it altogether. It's best when focusing on Guaspari's school program and the 10-year struggle to keep it alive; the drama falters when dealing half-heartedly with her tentative relationships, notably with a journalist (Aidan Quinn) who shies from commitment. And Craven? He seems content to direct by the numbers here, leaving inspiration on the screen while forfeiting his own. --Jeff Shannon

Average review score:

Moving, Heart-warming story...Directed by Wes Craven?
"Music of the Heart" represents the hope that all lives in us. The hope and courage to stand by our beliefs and have a positive though about most of the negative aspects of life. Meryl Streep plays Roberta Guaspari, a newly single mother of two, with no job and a desperate need of a man in her life. When friend/lover Brian Sinclair (Aidan Quinn) sends Roberta to Harlem, New York, to become a violin teacher, Roberta gets more than she expected. The rest of the cast, Oscar award nominee Angela Bassett as Janet, the school principle, and Grammy Award Winning singer, and making her motion picture debut, Gloria Estefan, as Isabel Vasquez, (who should have debuted as Eva Peron in "Evita") give superb performances that are believable and real. Cloris Leachman, Jane Leeves Jay O. Sanders' performances were essential and very effective to the story. Director Wes Craven, who is best known for the "Scream" trilogy, proves that switching genres is, in fact, POSSIBLE. Estefan and N'Sync's closing ballad, "Music of My Heart" fits the theme of the story very well. This 2 Disc DVD Set, is a true must-have to everyone's collection.

Inspiring story and bravura performance by Meryl Streep
This is a powerful, moving and triumphant true story, which springs from a documentary about a music teacher and her students. This is the story of Roberta Guaspari-Tzavaras (Meryl Streep), a violin teacher who single-handedly created a program to teach violin to inner city kids in East Harlem, New York. The film follows her from the dubious inception of the program, which started as a substitute teaching job, through the ensuing 10 years where so many children wanted to be in the program that it had spread to three schools in the district and a lottery had to be held each year to limit the number of students. The last part of the film is devoted to her fight to continue the program after the board of education killed its funding. It culminates in a triumphant benefit concert supported by some of the greatest violinists in the world to raise private funds to save the program.

This film celebrates the dogged determination and courage of one woman who proved that a single individual can make a difference. Her life was not a pretty picture. Her husband left her for one of her friends, turning her into an emotional basket case. Music was her only solace and teaching was her gift. Unfortunately, her lack of experience in the education system made her unqualified to get a position. So on the recommendation of a friend she convinces an East Harlem principal to give her a chance as a substitute violin teacher. She even supplies the violins.

The story from there is an example of life often being more remarkable than fiction. The results she achieved with these children were astounding. My only criticism of the story was that it contained a little too much treatment of her personal life. Almost her entire relationship with Brian (Aiden Quinn) could have been eliminated without hurting the story. I know that director Wes Craven was trying to give us some character development on how tough her life was and how difficult a person she was, but it was superfluous and the digression only bogged the story down. The real story here was about her and the kids. He should have stuck to that. Otherwise, Craven did a fabulous job of directing, delivering an emotional story with great power and effect. I was quite impressed, especially given the fact that prior to this film, he was almost exclusively a one genre director (Horror. Think 'Scream').

The acting by Meryl Streep was nothing short of brilliant. I have read criticism of Streep's performance as too harsh, it seeming as if she didn't really LIKE the children. In actuality her performance was dead solid perfect. I was lucky enough to rent the Collector's Series DVD of this film which included a separate disk of the original documentary about the real Roberta Guaspari-Tzavaras and her students, including the actual concert at Carnegie Hall. If you watch that documentary you will be in awe of how well Streep utterly nails her character. We get to see the real Roberta teaching her students and she is like a drill sergeant barking orders, throwing kids out of practice for not having their violins, reproaching them angrily about plucking their strings while she is speaking, and generally tolerating no nonsense. She is impatient with them and completely intolerant of anything but their best.

The children who made comments about the real Roberta said things like, 'I wouldn't have the discipline I have if it weren't for Roberta. That discipline not only helps me with the violin, but with everything else.' Another child said, 'I have to pay attention to what I'm doing or Roberta will get mean. But if I do good, she is pleased and that make me feel good.' Yet another, 'I want to work really hard so Roberta will be proud of me.' Clearly, these are not the comments of children who were being negatively affected by Roberta's no nonsense style.

Streep said in the featurette included in the DVD that it is very difficult playing a real person because there is no leeway for artistic interpretation. Translation: If she was to play Roberta Guaspari-Tzavaras, she had to become Roberta. This she accomplished with stunning accuracy. Streep captures not only Roberta's irascible demeanor, but the essence of her drive and passion for drawing the students very best. Roberta is a complex and difficult character to play and Streep throws herself into the role, delivering a tour de force performance that very few actors have the range and depth to accomplish.

This film is a must see for anyone who loves the arts and anyone who can appreciate a great actress giving a career performance. I rated it a 9/10, subtracting a point for Craven's unnecessary digression into Roberta's private life. That is, however, hardly a reason to miss this bravura performance and an inspiring story.

Outstanding.
Streep and Bassett are wonderful in this heart-felt drama about a music teacher who "belives" and makes a tremendous difference in the lives of young inner-city children. Funny and poignant.

Very highly recommended.

What's Love Got To Do With It?
Released in VHS Tape by Walt Disney Home Video (04 June, 2002)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Brian Gibson
Starring: Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne
Tina Turner, that dynamic diva of pop/soul/R&B from the '60s to the '90s, sings like a woman whose life story is every bit as rough and tough as her voice. And What's Love Got to Do With It, based on her autobiographical account (in I, Tina, written with Kurt Loder) of her years under the iron fist of her abusive husband and musical partner/Svengali Ike, is further proof of what we've always known about Tina: She's what you call a survivor. The movie is sort of the Disney version of Tina Turner's story--a glossy but thoroughly enjoyable, old-fashioned showbiz biopic with laughs, tears, great music, and outrageous (but faithful) period decor, costumes, makeup, and hairstyles. Our Heroine triumphs not only over the rigorous demands of her career in the music business, but finally manages to bust out of her troubled, violent marriage as well and become her own person. This is a movie that'll have you shouting at the top of your lungs: "You go, girl!" --Jim Emerson
Average review score:

Faithful Biopic
The life of Tina Turner on the big screen is the story behind this reasonably enthralling biopic. It's kind of a story of a woman getting out on top against all odds. The audience is treated to Tina's modest upbringing, the start of her musical career and her horrific marriage to Ike Turner. If you're expecting this to be a little overdramatic then you'd be right because some parts of this can seem over-the-top. Despite this though, you will find yourself engrossed in this true life story.

Undoubtedly the best points about this movie are the performances. Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne as Tina and Ike are just outstanding. Whilst Fishburne manages to really get across just how terribly resilient and ongoing Ike was, Bassett brings a likeable sense of vulnerability and, in the end, strength in her role. In particular, when we see her perform all those famous Tina numbers, she gets the movement down to a tee, so much to the extent that when the real Tina comes on stage, there's little difference.

Although the formula itself may be a little familiar to anyone who watches TV movies, this is a cut above the usual domestic abuse dramas.

A TRIUMPHANT STORY OF A REAL LIFE SURVIVOR....
This is an incredible, highly energized film about the life of rock and roll diva, Tina Turner, and her stormy relationship with her controlling and physically abusive husband, Ike Turner. Award calibre performances are turned in by Angela Bassett, as Tina, and Laurence Fishburne, as Ike. They are both absolutely riveting.

Ms. Bassett plays Tina with all the earthy charm and sexual magnetism of the real life Tina Turner. Laurence Fishburne gives an amazingly effective performance as Ike, at once both repellent and charismatic. The movie focuses on their relationship, one which sowed the seeds for the Tina Turner we know today.

What started out as a match made in heaven, quickly soured as Tina naturally took the lead musically in their Ike and Tina Turner Revue. When it became clear that Tina was the one for which the fans were clamoring, Ike did not take lightly to being second banana, and their relationship became one of domestic discord and abuse, with Ike easing into the role of abusive husband with relative ease.

When Tina finally had had enough, she divorced Ike, taking nothing from the marriage except her children and her show business name, the name she earned. From there, she went on to rebuild her life and career, becoming the world reknowned rock and roll diva she is today. Ike, a substance abuser, ended up in prison for narcotics possession and fell into relative obscurity, little more than a footnote in rock and roll history.

This is a film well worth watching, with great performances and great music. Look for the live stage performance by the real life Tina Turner at the end of the film. That alone is worth the price of this video.

MS. BASSETT DESERVED THE OSCAR
I still remember seeing Tina Turner in concert many years ago. Wow, what a dynamo! Few artists can rival the pure energy (and career longevity) of Tina and Angela Bassett captures her essence beautifully here. The dance routines were incredible and it is obvious Bassett prepared for this physically demanding role. The rest of the cast was equally impressive; Laurence Fishburne is particularly formidable as Ike. Great movie whether you are a devoted fan or just looking for quality entertainment.
