Intimate Portrait: Bette Midler
Released in VHS Tape by Unapix (13 April, 1999)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
As a child, Bette Midler was driven and craved applause. As she matured, she achieved quick success on Broadway in Fiddler on the Roof and as a singer on The Tonight Show. Now, she is a much-loved singer, Broadway performer, and actress who's won numerous awards, including Grammys, a Tony, Golden Globes, an Emmy, and an Academy Award nomination. Her personal life hasn't always been as smooth, with a self-professed breakdown following her mother's death. She then married Martin von Haselberg, gave birth to daughter Sophie, and launched All Girl Productions, which led to the hugely successful Beaches. An Emmy-winning performance on Johnny Carson's final episode of The Tonight Show inspired her return to the New York stage with Experience the Divine. At 50, she returned to Hollywood to star in the hit First Wives Club.

Barbara Hershey, the narrator and her costar in Beaches, portrays Midler as a wise and humble woman who is courageous and compassionate. This video is filled with personal photographs and video images as well as archival footage of Midler's performances onstage, in movies, and on Broadway. This is an inspiring look at the life of an amazing woman. --Tami Horiuchi

One wonderful production of the great musical
Though a remake..it is still refreshingly new. i noticed the same in the dialogue....but bette midler did it with such a flair. the child stars were talented...and well-cast...and the whole show was genuinely enjoyable. the cast all had powerful and great vocals...adding enjoyment to the musical numbers, especially "If Mama was married" I could watch this over and over...and i am.

great show
*i thought that this movie was very good......after seeing it on Broadway a few weeks ago with Bernadette Peters, i decided to rent the video and watch it again.....although Bette Midler is not as good as Bernadette (in my opinion) the movie was still very well done......this is an amazing show......and i am looking forward to when we put this show on this spring at my highschool.....i feel that if u would like to see Gypsy, but u do not want to travel to NYC to see it--u should buy this video*

An Impressive Cast!
This is a great musical with an impressive cast. A hilarious addition is Michael Moore as LA, and the show is stopped with Bette Midler and also Jennifer Rae Beck stuns all as June.

Beaches
Released in VHS Tape by Touchstone Video (13 August, 2002)
MPAA Rating: PG-13 (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Garry Marshall
Starring: Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey
Garry Marshall's 1988 drama about a 30-year friendship between two women, one wealthy (Barbara Hershey) and the other (Bette Midler) seeking her fortune in show business, is well written (based on the novel by Iris Rainer Dart) and nicely textured in its contrast between the characters' separate destinies. When Hershey becomes ill with cancer, the film takes a predictably sentimental course, yet Marshall brings out the best in both actresses and catches some very fine drama. The film is a little too long, perhaps, but overall it is a fine experience. --Tom Keogh

Touching Tale of Friendship
Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey star in this touching movie about friendship. Bette Midler plays CC Bloom, and Barbara Hershey plays Hilary Whitney. Two very different people, but a bond that would carry them through a lot. In the beginning as children they meet under the boardwalk. CC is very different from Hilary, an aspiring child star, whereas Hilary comes from a high class background. Two differing lives are told through letters to each other over the years, when finally Hilary rebels and decides to visit CC and live with her. They both meet a director, CC falls in love with him but he falls for Hilary. CC ends up marrying him, and Hilary goes back when her father is ill and ends up marrying a lawyer. When the four meet up again, Hilary and CC fight an awful lot and CC tries to make up by writing letters to her, which are sent back unopened. Hilary finds out her husband is cheating on her, and finds out she is pregnant as well. Hilary goes back to see CC and they make up, Hilary was jealous. Hilary gives birth to her daughter, and finds out she has the same heart disease that killed her mother when she was a child. Sadly Hilary ends up dying, and leaves her daughter to be taken care by CC. It is an incredible movie about the power of friendship, and it will make you laugh and cry. one of my favorites.

Friendship that never dies.....
I fell in love with the movie the first time that I saw it and still love it. One of the most brilliant performances by both Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey I have ever seen.I enjoyed very much seeing Bette showcase her voice in the movie because she has such a strong and beautiful voice, not to mention she is so hilarious. The scenes in this movie are emotional, uplifting, comedic and poignant. This film reminds of a special friendship that I have, and just watching the movie reminds me a lot of my relationship with my friend. It depicts that all friendships aren't perfect, everyone has their differences but that in the end that one special friend will always be there for you. In this world today, it is hard to find a friend like that. There were also some stellar performances by John Heard as the love interest of Bette Midler, Laine Kazane as Bette's mother Leona. What a wonderful movie, a real tearjearker and call it a chick flick if you want but this is a movie that was made for both men and women.

Ruthless People
Released in VHS Tape by Touchstone Video (25 July, 1989)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Directors: David Zucker, Jerry Zucker, and Jim Abrahams
Starring: Danny DeVito, Bette Midler, Judge Reinhold, and Helen Slater
A milestone comedy of the 1980s, Ruthless People delighted critics and audiences alike and set the tone of Hollywood comedies for years to come. Along with that other popular farce about wealthy Californians, Down and Out in Beverly Hills, this ingenious romp revived Bette Midler's career and launched Disney (by way of its subsidiary, Touchstone Pictures) into the lucrative production of R-rated comedies; it also ensured the star power of then-TV star Danny DeVito. Dale Launer became Hollywood's hot screenwriter du jour by cleverly reworking O. Henry's Ransom of Red Chief into a wicked tale of marital malice heightened by a bungled kidnapping. Midler is sublime as the victim of low-rent abductors ("I've been kidnapped by Kmart!"), and DeVito's the gleeful philanderer who refuses to pay ransom for his wife's unwanted return. With Anita Morris, Judge Reinhold, Helen Slater, and Bill Pullman among the plot-twisting schemers, the movie's so much fun that an eventual remake seems almost inevitable. --Jeff Shannon

The era of Bette
1986 to 1989 were big years for Bette Davis on the movie scene. In 1986 she filmed Ruthless People with Danny DeVito and the lesser known Helen Slater (Supergirl fame). Ruthless People, while a bit dated, has some hilarious moments and needs inclusion in any Midler collection.

Who could forget the kidnapped Midler lifting paint cans to keep fit and lose weight. Well, it's one way to keep yourself busy while being kidnapped.

Bette went on to star in the funny, but not as good as, "Outrageous Fortune" with Shelly Long.

DVD SUMMARY: Ruthless People is a bare-bones DVD. However, worth owning for the Bette factor alone!

A Ruthless Comedy!
It's about time that "Ruthless People" is finally out to own on DVD. I remember seeing this movie when I was really little, and I loved every minute. Now, almost 21 years old, I was able to get all of the little jokes that I didn't get when I was little. This is still a favorite, doesn't matter how old the movie is. "Ruthless People" is a laugh-riot that will leave you begging for more!

Millionaire Sam Stone hates his wife. How much? Enough that he is prepared to kill her. But when he gets home and is ready to do the deed, his wife, Barbara, is nowhere to be found. Instead, he gets a phone call from kidnappers who threaten to kill her if he does not pay the ransom. So what does Sam do? He celebrates!!! The movie and plot gets twisted and funnier as the minutes roll by.

The cast is terrific; including Danny DeVito, Judge Reinhold, Helen Slater, and Bette Midler. They are hillarious in this evil and twisting comedy. DeVito really steals the show and is absolutley hillarious.

The DVD, I admit, is quite poor. There is litterally no special features at all. Picture is good, not great. But keep in mind, that this is an old movie. For it being such an old movie, the picture looks pretty good. Even though the DVD isn't the best, I don't care. I just wanted the movie, that's all. And that's what I got. Doesn't matter to me if there are special features or not on this one.

"Ruthless People" is a cult classic and a terrific comedy that abandons the routine boring formula. It takes risks, it's well-written, and it is still one of the funniest movies out on the market today. Check this one out when you can.

CULT CULT CULT
Outstading movie and one of the best comedies ever. I mean, how many stupid scenes can you put in a movie? They are endless. In a way every character has something that makes them special to the viewer. Of course my favorite star is BETTE MIDLER. So many cult moments like these are impossible to imitate: right from the moment we (don't) see Bette in a potato bag kicking and screaming with the entrance of the VW van (personally the entrance itself makes me already laugh) and the two kidnappers hardly take her in the basement...where she falls right into. What happens next is so hilarious. When she escapes and is trapped in the kitchen is unbelievable, like a parody of the kitchen scene in 'Torn Curtain': how can you be any stupider than him? Using the tissue he just put chloroform on to ease the pain Bette justinflicted him with with a flying cup! . It's over the top. Also Incredibly stupid and funny is Anita Morris ("Have you seen THAT TAPE? ),, such misunderstadings are impossible. Another's when Danny DeVito, after receiving the tape, calls Morris at once and tells her he knows she sent it>>> YOU MUST WATCH IT! R Rating understandable, but isn't it a little bit ridiculous?

Big Business
Released in VHS Tape by Touchstone Video (13 August, 2002)
MPAA Rating: PG (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Jim Abrahams
Starring: Bette Midler and Lily Tomlin
Average review score:

Lord, my load is heavy!
This movie is not one of the most memorable comedies of the eighties, but it should be. It stands out among the booby comedies and the over the top antics of the era. What this dvd lacks in features, it makes up for in laughs. The simple premise and fabulous comedic timing make this a romp suitable for the whole family. I laugh my hind-quarters off everytime I watch it! SAVE JUPITER HOLLOW!

Great to rent!
So there's nothing on TV except reruns? Your husband wants to watch football and you hate football, so you go to the video rental to pick out a movie to watch on the spare TV in the bedroom? Hey, I've been there, done that. Now it's time, if you haven't already, to rent a blockbuster funny movie: Big Business with Bette Midler and Lily Tomlin.

When a rich couple have to have their twin girls in a small town, all kinds of madcap comedy starts to happen. First, the kids get mixed up. The rich couple is supposed to have two Bette Midlers, if you can believe it. And the poor folks are suppose to have two Lily Tomlins. But each couple gets one of each. And to make matters even funnier, both Lily's are named Rose and both Bette's are named Sadie. Each Sadie has a different personality. Each Rose has a different personality. Where do I begin?

The poor folks Sadie is a cow milkin', sweet singin' kind of gal who yodels and has lots of fun.

The rich folks Sadie is head of the family business now that her mom and dad are dead, and she thinks she's hot stuff. She's all stuck up and full of herself.

But, when poor Sadie visits New York, she has a lot in common with rich Sadie. They both like the same kinds of clothes, and like to eat the same things.

Poor Rose is Lily Tomlin at her best as a brash, life ain't gonna stop her kind of gal. Rich Rose is Lily Tomlin as an accident getting ready to happen. Poor Rose lets all her attitude hang out, and says just what she's thinking. Rich Rose cowers behind rich sister Sadie.

But when they all get together, the fun really begins, as ex-spouses and boyfriends find out they are attracted to Sadie, but it's the other Sadie they're really interested in. Same way with Rose. Country hick Fred Ward finds out he's really crazy about rich Rose.

This is a really cool movie, and I'm sure it's better than that old footbal game your husband is watching. So get hop, hop, hoppin' to your nearest video store and rent it. I'd say to buy it, but it's currently not available.

They don't make comedies like this anymore....
I am SOOO HAPPY this is finally being released on DVD (my VHS copy has been watched so many times, it's not that good anymore!).

This is a great story about TWO sets of twins that are born in this rinky dink hospital in Jupiter Hollow, only to have one twin from each set mixed with the other. It's a hilarious romp and definitely a feel good movie. I think far too many critics these days miss that point. If a movie makes you feel good and makes you want to watch it over and over again, that's a 5 star movie.

Big Business will keep you coming back for a great does of monkey business!! Viva Tomlin and Midler!!

Hocus Pocus
Released in VHS Tape by Walt Disney Home Video (04 June, 2002)
MPAA Rating: PG (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Kenny Ortega
Starring: Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy
This big, fat theatrical bomb has a lot going for it. There's the three leads, Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker, playing three resurrected witches who wreak havoc on Salem, Massachusetts, 300 hundred years after they were hung. There's music, special effects, and magic. There's a surprisingly horror-filled plot. Whoops, hold up on that last one. It's probably the extremes that this film goes to (displaying a Disney label), such as the witches sucking the life out of a little girl in the first five minutes, that put the brakes on any success for Hocus Pocus. Older children, however, in the 8 and up range should get a kick out of all the weird goings-on. It's a good measure of Halloween thrills and chills. --Keith Simanton

A Halloween Treat For Everyone
This movie is criminally underrated. First of all, the film wasn't the flop people think it is. It did over 45 million at the box office. Okay, that settled, let's dig in. Three witches from the 1800's are hung for taking the souls out of children in Salem, Mass. Present day Salem, a lonely teen resurrects the three hags accidentally while visiting their old cottage that has turned into a mini museum. The witches, well cast and perfectly played by Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy, set out on Halloween night to take the souls from the children as they trick or treat. The three lead actresses are perfect in their roles. They really bring them to life. This is a fun, light hearted film that the whole family can enjoy. The setting and decoration is perfect and has that great Halloweeny feel. There's also a funny cameo by Penny Marshall and Garry Marshall as husband and wife(but who are real life brother and sister in case you didn't know). This is a real great vehicle for Bette Midler. She fits perfectly. You'll also recognize Thora Birch(American Beauty)as the little sister. The film is a wonderful family treat that will delight and entertain the whole family.

Chuckles galore.
I absolutely LOVE this cute Disney movie, as the Divine Miss M. as the wickedly funny Winnie Sanderson, the witch sister of two other witch sisters, Mary and Sarah (Kathy Najimy and "Sex In The City"'s Sarah Jessica Parker) are resurrected by naive teen (Omri Katz) and his cute little sister (Thora Birch) trying to impress a pretty girl (Vinessa Shaw) who lights a black flame. A little bit of belly laughs, but mostly chuckles. But what makes up for the humor is the hilarious hijinks that ensue when the sisters are resurrected-looking for young children to suck their youth from, so they can live forever. This cute Disney movie has sufficient humor. It also has a little romance, a teeny bit of horror, and genuine warmth are cleverly interwoven in this 93-minute movie. A obvious Halloween favorite. (Don't miss that musical interlude, where the Divine Ms. M sings the funny "I Put A Spell On You." It obviously does put a little spell on you.) You can also see it on HBO and Cinemax. Rated PG for mild language and some scary stuff.

Awesome
I'm a 16 yr old who still watches Disney(So sue me, I hate MTV and the Pop rage). I never knew this movie was in theatres until I read these reviews! I just finished watching Hocus Pocus on TV tonight and thought I'd look it up on Amazon to see if it were on DVD/VHS. This movie is a classic, and I watch it every time it comes on. I have the soundtrack, which consists of like 2 songs, on Kazaa Media. It's the greatest halloween movie of the 90s for kids, and even teenagers, because I know alot of kids at school like it as well. Hope this review will help someone out! I would recommend this movie to anyone-my dad says it's one of the few things SJP did that was decent acting, lol!

Oliver and Company
Released in VHS Tape by Walt Disney Home Video (14 May, 2002)
MPAA Rating: G (General Audience)
Director: George Scribner
Starring: Joey Lawrence, Billy Joel, and Cheech Marin
Disney does Dickens in this animated version of Oliver Twist, in which a homeless New York City cat falls in with a bunch of mischievous dogs under the leadership of the appealing scoundrel Fagin. The roots of Disney's success with animation in the '90s begins with this clever, energetic, atmospheric movie, which succeeds in capturing the grim world Dickens conjured. Lyricist Howard Ashman (The Little Mermaid) worked on the songs, the best of which is sung by Billy Joel, who provides the voice of (the Artful) Dodger. --Tom Keogh

Howling good time
This is my favorite Disney movie of all time. While those words don't exactly give merit to how great this animated film is, they do explain my excitement over the fact it's being released on DVD. Loaded with features, I can't wait to add this to my collection.

A twist on Oliver Twist, Oliver the kitten is orphaned, and left in the street. But he's adopted by a street savvy pack of dogs who help him return to his rightful home.

Every single song is timeless, whether it be by Bette Midler or Huey Lewis or Billy Joel, you're guaranteed to be singing them for days.

Unfair portrayal of Dobermans
Really, I liked this movie a lot (it's one of my favorites), however, why does it seem to me like dobermans are always the bad guys? Being my favorite breed of dogs, dobermans are almost always (if not always) given a bad rep in the movies, and I don't think it's very nice. Maybe if there were a couple nice dobes in movies out there, people wouldn't misjudge them as much as they do.

Why isn't this more popular?!?!
I simply adore this movie! Along with "Lady and the Tramp," it's one of the best Disney films. It's basically the story of Oliver Twist told with a cat, some dogs, and a poor man named Fagin. (Only, here Fagin's the good guy and Sykes is bad.) The characters are hilarious; Georgette is a haughty poodle voiced by Bette Midler, Dodger is a cool mix breed voiced by Billy Joel, and other voice talents include Huey Lewis and Ruth Pointer. The songs are fantastic and catchy. My favorite character happens to be Rita, the Afghan, but they're all great. I promise, kids and adults alike will love Oliver & Co.!
