Some people may sneer at this 1965 musical, but the truth is the film has earned its status as a perennially watchable romantic-drama, largely on the strength of a fun story and chemistry between stars Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. Veteran filmmaker Robert Wise (The Day the Earth Stood Still) mostly stays out of the way of the film's appealing elements, which include a based-on-fact tale of Austria's von Trapp family, who fled their Nazi-occupied country in 1938. Andrews is delightful and even fascinating as Maria, who sheds her tomboyish ways as a novice nun to accept the mantle of adulthood, becoming matron of the motherless von Trapp clan. Plummer is matinee-idol handsome and gives a smart performance to boot, and the cast of young people and kids who make up the singing von Trapp children make a strong impression. The Captain(Christopher Plummer) is very strict and it's up to Maria to brighten the family up. It ends with the family in danger from the Nazi as they flee from Austria. The songs are magnificent and I love the "Do Re Mi" and the main song "Sound of Music".
The Austrian scenery is very beautiful and I'm really sure anybody would enjoy this film!

Veteran filmmaker Robert Wise (The Day the Earth Stood Still) mostly stays out of the way of the film's appealing elements, which include a based-on-fact tale of Austria's von Trapp family, who fled their Nazi-occupied country in 1938. Andrews is delightful and even fascinating as Maria, who sheds her tomboyish ways as a novice nun to accept the mantle of adulthood, becoming matron of the motherless von Trapp clan. Plummer is matinee-idol handsome and gives a smart performance to boot, and the cast of young people and kids who make up the singing von Trapp children make a strong impression. Based on the Rodgers and Hammerstein stage musical, the score includes such winners as "Maria" and the future John Coltrane hit "My Favorite Things." --Tom Keogh

The happiest sound in its best version yet!Reviled by some, beloved by many, consistently referred to as the most popular movie musical ever made, THE SOUND OF MUSIC more than fulfills the promise of its beautiful visuals and expert song numbers on home video via DVD. This edition tops the 1995 laserdisc by allowing the sparkling, exemplary design of its 70mm. Todd-AO frame to be exhibited with increased sharpness and resolution. The 4.1 Dolby Digital soundtrack is powerful and clean, but since this film was originally mixed for six-track magnetic stereo, it's curious why the effort wasn't made by Fox to split the surrounds! Nonethless, the film sounds terrific. The extra features make this package a bargain at the price. Full length commentary by director Bob Wise, with the musical numbers presented sans vocals, is a great touch. And the two documentaries are beautifully presented; full of facts and bits of arcane information that any fan will truly enjoy. A great movie, and a great DVD rendition. More like this, PLEASE!
~The hills are alive with the Sound of Music!!~This movie was fantabulous!! Great songs, great actors, and great everything!
It's a real life story, it really happened. It is about a woman named Maria(Julia Andrews) and she is a not-so good novice nun in the Abbey. The Reverend Mother then sends her to Salzburg since a motherless Von Trap family needed a governess to take care of its seven children. (wow!) The Captain(Christopher Plummer) is very strict and it's up to Maria to brighten the family up. It ends with the family in danger from the Nazi as they flee from Austria. The songs are magnificent and I love the "Do Re Mi" and the main song "Sound of Music".
The Austrian scenery is very beautiful and I'm really sure anybody would enjoy this film!

DON'T settle for the single disc edition!!The 2 disc is much better!! It has a 87 min documentary of what happened on and off the set, also the real Von Trapp story. Plus radio commentaries and a documentary of Salsburg. An A++++++!!!!!!!!
The Ultimate SOM DVD to Buy!Great DVD, with *tons* of extras to keep you amused for hours. All you need now is the 35th Anniversary 2-disc cd set and the SOM: The Making of America's Favorite Movie book by Julia Antopol Hirsch and you'll be the Ultimate Sound of Music fan! :)
If I could give it 10 stars...I LOVE THE SOUND OF MUSIC! I'm not just saying this because I love to sing and all that kind of stuff, but I love the story, the energy that the actors put forth, especially Julie Andrews. My favorite parts of the movie include the great songs by the great composers. If you already like musicals, you should definitely see The Sound of Music and you'll fall in love with it! The kids made me laugh with this slick wit, well what they thought was slick. Anyway, the whole movie is great. If you ever get a chance to see the play, do that, too!

The films of Tim Burton shine through the muck like a jack-o-lantern on a foggy October night. After such successes as The Nightmare Before Christmas and Edward Scissorhands, it should come as no surprise that Sleepy Hollow is a dazzling film, a delicious reworking of Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Dark and moody, the film is a thrilling ride back to the turn of the 19th century. Johnny Depp stars as Ichabod Crane, a seemingly hapless constable from New York City who is sent to the small town of Sleepy Hollow to solve the mystery of the decapitations that are plaguing the town. Crane is a bumbling sort, with a tremendous faith in science over mysticism, and he comes up against town secrets, bewitching women, and a number of bodies missing heads. Christina Ricci, as beautiful as ever, is Katrina Van Tassel, the offbeat love interest who alternately charms and frightens Crane.
The film, while occasionally gory (as one should expect from a movie about a headless horseman), is not terribly frightening, although it is suspenseful. Both Depp and Ricci are convincing, and the art direction and production values give the village its harsh feel. Toward the end, once the secrets are revealed, the film does slow down; however, this stylistic horror film provides many tricks and even more treats. --Jenny Brown

Dark and atmospheric, with a hint of humorDirector Tim Burton excels at developing moody, dark atmospheres for his films, and it is the milieu of Sleepy Hollow, with its severe architecture and dark, creepy forests that stands out. However, there is more to this film than that: Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci turn in fine performances, as do an expert cast of seasoned character actors. Washington Irving's classic story has been reimagined successfully by Burton and his screenwriters, Kevin Yagher and Andrew Kevin Walker. In this version, Ichabod Crane is an iconoclastic New York police inspector who is an early believer in the value of forensic science. Exasperated by his insistance on adhering to scientific method, his superiors send him to Sleepy Hollow to solve a series of decapitation murders. Crane is a reluctant hero with a weak stomach--he is afraid of spiders and his first encounter with the Headless Horseman causes him to lock himself in his room for three days! All of this makes for a supremely entertaining mix of thrills and humor.

The movie is a visually stunning and powerful suspense mystery with a supernatural twist. Tim Burton delivers another crowd-pleasing spectacle. The cast is terrific. Johnny Depp delivers a great and often comical performance as Ichabod Crane. Christina Ricca is enchanting as the beautiful Katrina.
Sleepy Hollow DVD is quite good. Paramount has finally delivered a better quality disc. The picture quality is sharp and clear. The sound is great. Unlike previous Paramount DVDs, this one has more and better special features like commentaries and behind-the-scenes footage. Overall, Sleepy Hollow earns a "B+".
Fantastically dark and suspensefulI absolutely love this movie. I had not had the luck to see it in the theatre, but after renting it I had to buy my own copy. Tim Burton does a fantastic job of creating a dark mood. Even the photography has muted colors, which adds to the atmosphere of the movie. Johnny Depp's character, Ichabod Crane is a quirky and amusing. The best is Christopher Walken as the Headless Horseman. I could not think of anyone better to play this part. Overall, this is a horror movie that actually has horror, not just blood and gore, not to mention a believable plot, which most horrors fall short on.
