The Powerpuff Girls - Bubblevicious
Released in VHS Tape by Hanna-Barbera (23 October, 2001)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Directors: Craig McCracken, Robert Renzetti, John McIntyre, Genndy Tartakovsky, Robert Alvarez (II), Lauren Faust, and Randy Myers
Starring: Cathy Cavadini, Elizabeth Daily, and Tara Strong
This trio of crime-fighting superheroines must work around kindergarten obligations, and if you've seen the Cartoon Network series you know they must save the world before bedtime. But they rise to the challenge with the help of their guardian-creator, Professor Utonium. In the Emmy-nominated title episode, Bubbles gets fed up with being "the cute one," while her comrades get the better assignments, so she takes on a series of ugly baddies, resulting in many fires and explosions. There are five episodes on this 60-minute tape, including the double-episode "Uh-Oh Dynamo," which finds the girls battling a monster at the city park. The trio finally vanquishes it from inside a huge robot, but not before the entire downtown appears leveled. In "Mr. Mojo's Rising," the girls must rescue the professor when he is kidnapped by an evil megabrained monkey. "Powerpuff Bluff" introduces three hoodlums who impersonate the girls and rip off Townsville's denizens, landing the real girls a spell in the pokey. "Cat Man Do" will teach youngsters to go the shelter for their pets, as the kitty (voiced by Mark Hamill) the gals "rescue" from a crimelord's compound turns out to be a mind- controlling fiend. Parents scrutinizing violent content, beware; otherwise for ages 7 and up. --Kimberly Heinrichs

PowerPuff Bluff...great for the audience it was meant for!
I have to say that I purchased this DVD by chance ... because my 3-year old is infatuated with the PPG's! Great buy for what I paid for it. I can't begin to tell you the countless times she's watched it ...

There is plenty of action and the Cat-Man-Do episode is adorable. You will read other reviews from people who don't take into account what audience this series generally speaks to. I am an adult and I enjoy watching it, but I don't expect it to challenge my intellect or mesmerize me with super plot-twists. It's supposed to be colorful, endearing, funny and generally just a cartoon.

If you're looking for a DVD with more "guts", stick to those written for your age audience. If you're a PPG fan and looking for a good fix, PowerPuff Bluff is great, as long as you don't expect a ton of extras...it doesn't have them.

It helps if you think of them as Ginger, Sporty, & Baby, Jr.
What is it about the Cartoon Network that appeals so fully to both kids *and* adults? It's not only the nostalgic old cartoons but also the brilliant new ones, top among them the Powerpuff Girls! Never seen them (or don't have the Cartoon Network)? You owe it to yourself to get this video with some of the best episodes of the series. Parents with very young children should be warned that the action (or "fantasy violence," as the TV warning says) can sometimes be strong, but the good guys (er, girls) always win and there's enough that works on both levels to amuse and entertain both the old and young kids. The standout episode of this tape is "Bubblevicious," where sweet, innocent Bubbles laments not being 'hardcore' enough to take on the meanest villains her sisters Blossom and Buttercup can. Visual jokes and pop-culture references (including a very funny brief visual homage to 'Spinal Tap') make this the smartest cartoon show since 'The Simpsons'--full of fun and irreverance but without the gross-out humor of some of its 'Cartoon Cartoon' companions on the TV network. There's enough cute Powerpuff Girls merchandise out in the stores to challenge Pokémon, but the first and best thing you need is this tape! As the Talking Dog would say: "It's good! It's good! It's good! It's good!"

Hilarious and tasteful
This is an awesome cartoon. It's funny and cute, and great for both adults and children. "Bubblevicious" is a must see for Bubble's fans, and "Telephonys" is hilarious. The other episodes are great as well. The evil, super intellegent chimp Mojo Jojo (the Girl's archvillian) is actually a unique and rather likeable villian. If you like the Powerpuff Girls, you will love this DVD.

One final note: the box for this DVD claims there is a, Courage the Cowardly Dog, episode on it; but, instead you get to be tortured by the poorly drawn and very lame, Sheep in the Big City, cartoon.

Loverboy
Released in VHS Tape by Columbia/Tristar Studios (12 September, 1990)
MPAA Rating: PG-13 (Parental Guidance Suggested)

Starring: Patrick Dempsey and Kate Jackson

Not as good as I remembered
Remembering how much I enjoyed watching this over and over again on cable when I was younger, I picked this up recently. While it was fun to watch, it's not nearly as good as I remembered. Much of the comedy falls flat, as does a good amount of the acting, script, etc. While I'd still like to see this released on DVD, just to complete my collection of 80's teen comedies, there's a long list of stuff I'd like to see first.

Funny Fable with a Moral
This movie reminds me a bit of another Patrick Dempsey movie, "Can't Buy Me Love", because this movie too is also a fable. While "Can't Buy Me Love" had multiple morals, there are fewer morals in this movie because of the complexity of the principal moral.

The main moral of this movie is that you need to take care of your significant other because if you do not, they will. While some people will say that you need to remain faithful under all circumstances, what we see in this movie are a group of women who are neglected by their husbands that then seek paid companionship with Patrick Dempsey. Now I need to explain the movie a bit.

Patrick Dempsey has been goofing off in school bit time, and his father decides it is time to cut him off financially. Patrick needs a substantial amount of money for tuition in the fall. By chance Patrick runs into a woman that gives him money for having sex with him. The next thing Patrick knows, this woman has told all her friends about Patrick, and he becomes a gigolo.

Before you wrinkle your nose in disgust, Patrick does not have sex with all these women. He listens to some, dances with others, and generally becomes their friend.

Patrick's business does exceedingly well, and he quickly sees how he'll have tuition by fall. However, things begin unraveling about Patrick. Patrick has a beautiful girlfriend who finds out about Patrick's business, several husbands find out about Patrick, Patrick's father thinks he is gay, and a guy that Patrick works with develops a major crush on Patrick's mother. Everything comes to a head at the end of the movie in a rather satisfactory way.

While the description of the movie might make some cringe, in fact this is a funny movie. Near the end it becomes hilarious. Patrick gets in deeper and deeper, and eventually he finds that the only way to get out of trouble is to come clean with everybody. Ultimately Patrick realizes that what he did was wrong. Even though Patrick does not blame his behavior on the husbands, their behavior set up the need their wives had. Furthermore, in the conclusion of the movie each husband ended up in a different situation depending on how much their wives wanted to deal with their husband's issues.

This movie is highly entertaining; definitely a light comedy. For me "Can't Buy Me Love" and "Loverboy" are the two best movies Patrick Dempsey made in his early years as an actor. Four stars for being funny, entertaining, and have at least one good moral, as well as an all-star cast that included Kirstie Alley, Carrie Fisher, Robert Picardo, Robert Ginty, Kate Jackson, Vic Tayback and Barbara Carrera.

LOVERBOY ON DVD!!!
This movie is an halirious comedy of the 80s. Its about a guy(Patrick Dempsey, who has a girlfriend and he gets a job as a pizza delivery guy, the only thing is that the deliveries he makes arent just a pizza its a little fun with the opposite sex. The movie is halirious, he ends up even making a delivery to his mom(ALMOST). Colombia/Tristar pictures needs to bring this back on DVD!!! We should beg Colombia/Tristar pictures to bring this back, private resort, and just one of the guys, all on DVD. They need to be put on DVD, for us 80's fans.

CoStarring Miss Bellum ...
Best cartoon on the video is "Something's a Ms.," which mearks the return of Sedusa, and a new side of Miss Bellum that we have never seen. Miss Bellum fans will really rejoice with this collection, as the double episode "Criss Cross Crisis" puts Blossom into Miss Bellum's body. Of course, Bubbles ends up in the Mayor's body, and that's ... just ... not right. Worst cartoon of the lot is "The Mane Event," where Blossom learns to never let her sisters cut her hair. An intriguing villain, but way too many bad puns associated with it. The new cartoon "Power Lunch" is boffo, with the Gangrene Gang getting superpowers from irridated convenience store food. Only real bummer is that they picked a so-so Dexter's Lab cartoon - "Dexter's Lab: A Story" - for the bonus 'toon. Still, one of the best videos in the PPG collection.

Anime for toddlers?
Yep, it looks like that way and it must be, because the big-eyed females are young enough to be in K-I-N-D-E-R-G-A-R-T-E-N. But boy oh boy can them widdle baby girls really KICK the world's baddest guy's fat buns into orbit! And they look awfully cute doing it to boot!

Some of the episodes are pretty retarded, but heck, I'm retarded myself sometimes, so I really enjoy a whole lot of them! But some of the episodes, like "Speed Demon" and "Knock It Off" really scared my smelly, unwashed socks off, no kidding! So who knows? Maybe it's not really anime made for toddlers after all, eh?

Mostly super collection of stories
The episodes in this collection have a common theme: a deviation from the way the closing credits are announced or the appearance of characters, i.e. it isn't always the Powerpuff Girls who "save the day" or if they do, it's presented in a different way.

"Twisted Sister", which has nothing to do with Dee Snider, has the Powerpuff Girls so drained from fighting crime non-stop they decide to create a fourth member. As Bubbles says, "Three puffs aren't enough." Unfortunately, they end up creating Bunny, the overgrown Igor-like ogre on the front cover. Morals of the story: A) interpretations of what's nice is relative and hence deviates from the original. Kind of like the difference between Marxism and Leninism B) let Bubbles pick the ingredients--she chooses the best one. Unfortunately, the story goes downhill from there, with a predictable denouement. (Rating: 3)

Fortunately, things get better from there. In "Something's A Ms.," the Mayor's reliable and intelligent secretary Ms. Bellum repeatedly asks for time off, seducing the old codger with kisses. Then, robberies begin, with her reporting the crime. Ms. Bellum might as well be the Mayor's brain. When she leaves, he's more or less a statue. The emphasis here is that Ms. Bellum might as well be the glue holding Townsville's administration together. Nothing had better happen to her. (Rating: 4)

"The Mane Event" has Buttercup and Bubbles giving Blossom a hideous haircut without her knowledge, partly to cover up a mistake, partly as a practical joke. How hideous? Even the monster whom they're out to fight laughs. The scene where Buttercup and Blossom's cheeks puff out in an effort to restrain their laughter is classic, followed by their outburst of hilarity. As the Professor tells Blossom, turn that hair-don't into a hair-do, and she does. The scene of a happy Blossom waving her long red hair in its majesty like a fashion model is also cool. (Rating: 5.. snrrk.. HA HA HA HA HA HA! Omigod, Blossom, you look.. OK, I'll be nice)

The music video here is Shonen Knife's "Buttercup (I'm A Super Girl)," also found on the Boogie Frights compilation, but worth watching over and over anyday. (Rating: 5).

"Criss Cross Crisis" is the weirdest and most anarchic episode I've seen. An experiment of the Professor involving apples and oranges results in mass body swaps a la movies like Vice Versa, Big, and Freaky Friday. To make matters worse, someone takes advantage of the chaos to stage robberies. All the time, the Professor in Buttercup's body(!), keeps pulling the lever of his machine to get the right frequency. With the results he gets, he might as well be playing with a one-armed bandit. ("No... no..."). Well worth watching for its sheer anarchy and seeing Blossom as a weiner dog. (Rating: 5)

"Power Lunch" actually makes the Gangreen Gang interesting. After pigging out on junk food at a convenience store, they are zapped by the Powerpuff Girls' laser eyes. A chemical reaction gives them superpowers, mostly based on the kind of food they gobbled up. For once, the Powerpuffs are defeated by them. Ace's recalls Mr. Freeze and Snake's recalls Mr. Fantastic. Grubber's powers had me rolling on the floor--hint he drank soft drinks. (Rating: 5).

"Dexter's Lab" is the best bonus cartoon I've seen. It involves a dog that follows Dexter home. Frustrated at being interrupted at his work, Dexter invents a formula enabling the dog to talk. (Rating: 4).

Overall rating: (3+4+5+5+5+5+4)/7 = 4.4, rounded to 4.

Bumpy finds a moral
this movie is a good one to teach kids all about giving and greed. it shows pieces of two holidays too, that makes it a good learning video. the fact that it is about disgusting creatures from the closet and under the bed makes it fun for kids.

Greatest holiday video since the Grinch
It has been a tradition for the past couple of years to have all the neighborhood kids over to watch this HILARIOUS video. Grown-ups *love* it, too! The Hanukkah song in it is great as well. Mr. Bumpy is some of the most imaginative children's entertainment produced!

Great way to teach about "monsters"
This is a goofy little character, a little off from the normal Disney characters. He's a dirty sock eating monster that lives under a boys bed. My daughter fell in love with him at about 2 1/2. I wasn't sure about her watching him, but what I saw that she learned amazed me! She's not afraid of monsters! She thinks that "monsters" are all as funny and silly as bumpy and the closet monster, that comes after bumpy, is just a lump of dirty clothes. He influenced her so much that she name her dog BUMPY! She loves Mr. Bumpy's friend squishington & his dolly friend molly. My husband and I got a kick out of watching this with her. Hope you enjoy! Bad Dreams

My jaw hit the floor!
I can't really find the words to describe this film, but I'll try. :) I like horror flicks as much as the next guy, but this film was a cut above. To be honest the only reason I saw it in the first place was because Dean Cameron was in it, and speaking of DC, his performance is amazing! The small smirk before saying "Later" just blew me away. The small details in voice variation and facial expressions..the man is the best. And let's not forget about Jennifer Rubin! Blood, Blood, and more blood, Peter Pans out the window, blood showers, and Ralph's self-stabbing fest makes this film one to watch on an empty stomach. Don't make the same mistake I did by going to "The Bell" before watching this. Great film! Richard Lynch is scary, Jennifer Rubin is amazing, and Dean Cameron shows us the meaning of the word 'range'. Great!

A Cut Above the Norm
I miss this movie. If there was a film that should be moved up on the list to be transferred to DVD this film would be it. It's not your typical horror film where there's nothing but mindless slice and dice behind motives of stupidity. The main character deals with the psychological aspects of something horrible happening to her (which makes sense since it takes place in a mental ward). But when the bodies start to fall, the "culprit" is not so obvious. No Freddy Kruger or Michael Myers. This movie also pulls you in through the supporting cast, all interesting and even funny. I love this movie! I give it five stars as a contender against other horror films and it rates right up there with the originals like NIGHTMARE AN ELM STREET and HALLOWEEN. There's death. There's drugs. There's comedy, and hey, even a little romance. Grab some popcorn and spend two hours with BAD DREAMS. You won't be disappointed!

A Movie That Affects Just Certain People
Well, the first time I saw this movie I literally became obsessed with the whole cult tragedy story, mainly because I was very young and looking for movies to satisfy me, but as I've gotten older, I can still say that this movie is one of my favorite scary, weirdy, "Halloween Mood" movies. I mean, it goes from the time this little girl was involved in a mass suicide (she survived) of course and then, it goes to 14 years later and she's still haunted by her past experiences. I guess with a movie like this, you can create your own kind of story line because it never said why she was in the cult group to begin with, so you can kind of make up a story of your own. But anyway, I thought it was a great movie, not because it was Academy Award winning acting nor did it have an extremely intellectual plot, but I liked it because it was good at a certain time of my life and now I can look at that film, and remember myself always! Ha!

The Powerpuff Girls - Birthday Bash
Released in VHS Tape by Hanna-Barbera (23 October, 2001)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Directors: Craig McCracken, Robert Renzetti, John McIntyre, Genndy Tartakovsky, Robert Alvarez (II), Lauren Faust, and Randy Myers
Starring: Cathy Cavadini, Elizabeth Daily, and Tara Strong
Sugar, spice, everything nice, and a bit of Chemical X is what it took to bring us Bubbles, Blossom, and Buttercup--also known as those crime-fighting kindergartners, the Powerpuff Girls. This video collection of five episodes from their hit Cartoon Network show provides a delightfully humorous introduction to the minuscule marvels. The title episode, "Birthday Bash," features the girls defeating the destructive plans of three separate villains (Mojo Dojo, The Princess, and the Amoeba Boys) without ever leaving their own birthday celebration. "Beat Your Greens" introduces us to alien broccoli, and "Stuck Up, Up and Away" shows the origin of the girls' female nemesis, Princess. "School House Rocked" and "Los Dos Mojo" complete the villain cycle by featuring the Gangrene Gang and Mojo Dojo--the ever failing and overdressed monkey--in tales that show us the girls both at school and on the job. A bonus cartoon, "Sheep in the Big City," doesn't feature the Powerpuff Girls but will be enjoyed by their fans for its combination of blatant and intelligent humor, much like the style of the jokes found in all Powerpuff episodes. With a running time of over an hour, this tape is sure to provide its viewers with a good supply of girl power. Ages 5 and older. --Zachary Lively

What is wrong with you people?!!
This has got to be the worst T.V show/cartoon in the history of entertainment! The powerpuffs are just these three lil' skanks that don't ver save the world but a potsmokin city called Townesville, and that's only the beginning. The mayor is a complete jerk and should NOT be in office to begin with! Why don't they just impeach that old midget? Secondly, what is with the decapitated miss Belum? She does not have a face obviously becuase they couldn't think up one to put on her! Third, the fight scenes are just cheesy cheesy cheesy! (I've seen MORE action in a "Popeye" cartoon!) OH YEAH! Shouldn't the government be holding the chemical X formula for observation besides some laboratory Professor? It just does'nt make any sense! Craig Mccracken has gone downhill since this was aired! He should have stuck to his masterpieces, "2 Stupid Dogs" and "Dexter's Lab" instead because those shows were at least funny, compared to this garbage! I mean, what happened here????

Mostly good collection
This is the second of three in a series of detailed reviews from the videos comprising the Powerpuff 3-Pack. Video: Birthday Bash.

"Birthday Bash": There's nothing ordinary about the Powerpuff Girls, and their birthday party is no exception. Despite their attempts to have a simple birthday celebration, Mojo, Princess, the Amoeba Boys, and Him have sent them presents meant to destroy them. (Rating: 4).

"Beat Your Greens" is the crown jewel here on how to get kids to eat their greens. Broccoloid aliens sent a mind-control spore that infects the Farmsville broccoli supply. Kids don't like broccoli so they don't eat it. The attempts of one parent to coax his baby son is funny, comparing the broccoli to an X-Wing fighter, a pirate ship, etc. The way the kids defeat the Broccoloids is creative. "Release the cheese!" There's also a line taken from Apocalypse Now, which only parents might get. Funny line from Bubbles: "That scared the pants off me!" (Rating: 5).

In "Los Dos Mojos", the Girls are busy fighting Mojo, but Bubbles accidentally gets knocked on the head by an I-beam and wakes up thinking she's someone else. Blossom and Buttercup soon find their sibling dressed in a familiar turban and cloak, speaking in such a way that she constantly reiterates, restate the same thing over and over, repeats everything she says. Bubbles' manner of speaking is simply funny! "I am bad. I am evil. I am... MOJO JOJO!" The way she taunts Buttercup--"Afraid I'll whip the skirt off you?"-- and her imitation of Mojo's laugh is also amusing. (Rating: 5)

Elmer Sglue (Elmer's Glue, get it?) is picked on in "Paste Makes Waste", mostly by Mitch, but the icing on the cake comes when Buttercup, encouraged by Mitch and the others, except for Blossom and Bubbles, cries out, "Eat this, paste-eater!" and hurls a clod of paste at him. An accident makes Elmer a giant behemoth hell-bent on getting even with those who picked on him. Basically a well-taught lesson on why it's bad to pick on others. (Rating: 4)

"School House Rocked" has the Gangreen Gang being caught by truant officer Jack Wednesday (guess how this guy talks?) and being sent to (what was Wednesday thinking?) Pokey Oaks Kindergarden, where they cause all sorts of trouble. (Rating: 4).

Despite the label on the video, the bonus cartoon features Cowardly Dog's fight against some hostile eggplant, not the Sheep In The City cartoon. (Rating: 3).

Overall rating: (4+5+5+4+4+3)/6=4.2, rounded down to 4.

I love da Powerpuffs sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much!!!!
OK! Now, let's get started. Here's the episodes of what they're about.

Birthday Bash: This is the best episode on da video!!!!!!!!!!!! Well, Its the Girls birthdays, & Mojos present is soo funny! The robot says "I am I gift from Mojo Jojo! Enjoy your birthday, or it will be your last!" hahahaha! The rocket from Princess was cool too. And the funniest present of them all was the Ameoba Boys Powerpuff Voodoo Dolls. I cracked up. And Him gives candy. (5 stars) The second one was Beat Your Greens. Another hillarious episode. It's when these evil Brocli Aliens plant brocli spores on the farm & the kids don't like Brocli. O, it's soo funny when this young dad says 2 his baby boy: "Here comes the Brocli express! Woo Woo!" O, & the brocli Aliens sound like robots with their eyes open. But, with their eyes closed, they sound like evil babys. Geesh! And, its hillarious when the kids & Powerpuffs chomp them up. (5 stars) 3d is Paste Makes Waste. Well, this boy in class, Elmer eats paste & these bullys like Mitch, Buttercup, & these 2 weird twins laugh at him 4 being a paste eater. Buttercup throws paste all over the table by saying: "Eat this, paste eata!" And when Elmer eats toxic with a bug, he turns into a man monster. Elmer puts paste all over Townsville, & it's surprising that the Mayor dosen't say anything! Idiot! Blossom & Buttercup get absorbed, & Buttercup says "I'mmmmmmm SOA-AAAARRRRR-REEEEY!!!!!!!!!!!" And Elmer says she's cool now. (5 stars) 4th is School House Rocked. Well, the Gangreene Gang go 2 school, Mr. Wednesday wanted them 2. That man sounds soo boring. But, I T loves this episode. The Gangreene Gang always fool & trick people into letting them eat food & stuff. When Ace drops it & says sorry, he really does it on purpose! Jerk!!! O, the begenning wuz kool when Ace & Snakey was playin a Powerpuff game with Bubbles vs. Fuzzy Lumpkins. Why didn't he give the Powerpuffs mean presents in Birthday Bash? Well, Ms. Keane thinks the girls we're splatting paste in school, but its the Gangreene Gang's fault of course. O, it's so funny when Billy shows he has 1 eye. HA HA HA HA HA HA! Also, when Grubber pretents 2 be a human. HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!! & when Turo holds up this deadly stapler who pretends its a girl. HA! & the stupid evil gang tricks the kids into playin Dodgeball. They cheat by throwing balls at the kids. Nasty freaks!!! (5 stars) Last, but not least is Los Dos Mojos. It's when Mojo destroys Townsville lighley. when Bubbles is on the ground, she hears Mojos words & teleports & wakes up thinking she's the real Mojo Jojo! AAH! She destroys townsville with dark shadowey eyes! GEE! Its soo funny when she says "I am not Bubbles! Bubbles is not my name! If u adress me by Mojo Jojo, that would be correct! I am bad, I am evil, I am Mojo Jojo!!!" Mojo Bubbles laughs like a snake. hehehe. O, she also even says "Its time to keep your maker!" & Blossom & Buttacup say "U LEAVE THE PROFECCER OUT OF THIS!!!" & Mojo Jojo Bubbles also says "Alone shall I rule this world!" & also even "What's the matta Buttacup? Afraid 2 fight?" She also kicks Mojo out of his house! (5 stars) O, the Courage bonus episode Journey to the Center of Nowere is awsome too! Well, there's these little monstrous eggplants who thinks Muriel is their enemy. O, it's soo hillarious when Courage disguises as the Great Eggplant! He says, "Fellow Eggplants, Muriel is not our real enemy." Also, he even says: "Great Eggplant says, do this funky!" (5 stars) This is da best Powerpuff video in the collection yet!

The crime-fighting kindergarteners go after the Sandman, a jealous schoolmate, the usual monsters, and a superhero impostor in this five-episode compilation from the Cartoon Network favorite. The overworked, sleep-deprived Sandman is out of control in the title episode, putting the whole world to sleep so he can get some shut-eye of his own. But the gals thwart him by appearing in his dream and turning it into a nightmare. "Just Another Manic Mojo" finds the hermit monkey trying to destroy the trio with a giant laser when they come to his castle to retrieve their wayward ball. Buttercup refuses to bathe in "Down 'n' Dirty," stinking up Pokey Oaks Kindergarten and grossing out even the villains she battles. Classmate Princess hires Mojo to isolate Chemical X and turn her into a Powerpuff Girl in "Mo Job." And muscle-bound Major Man replaces the girls in the hearts and minds of Townsville when his exploits surpass theirs--but not for long, of course. The 70-minute video includes a bonus episode of "Courage the Cowardly Dog," which involves an eggplant uprising against the dog's vegetable-loving owner, Muriel, in a story called "Journey to the Center of Nowhere." An accident makes Elmer a giant behemoth hell-bent on getting even with those who picked on him.
