When It Puts You In Hysterical Pain...Its a Good Comedy
There have been lots of movies that Ive seen that have made me laugh from time to time while watching, but 1987's "Stakeout" with Richard Dreyfuss was one of the best comedies of the 80s. Dreyfuss and Emilio Estevez play two joking and bumbling police detectives, who are assigned to a seemingly boring stakeout of the house of an escaped criminal's girlfriend. After Dreyfuss though, broken up after his wife leaves, falls in love with the focus of their investigation...he digs a hole for himself so deep he finds it hard to be a lover AND a cop at the same time. Its a perfect scenerio, when Dreyfuss does his best to keep his relationship across the street from the eyes of his collegues, and himself out of trouble. The only one who knows of this escapade is Estevez, who watches the hilarious antics of his partner through a camera across the street. Until I saw this movie I never took notice of Richard Dreyfuss, and I saw the Emilio Estevez of the 80s in many troublemaking roles of hard-core youth kinda movies like "That Was Then, This Is Now". Needless to say this hysterical movie is was a different and perfectly played out comedy...that worked so well they HAD to make a sequal: "Another Stakeout". The 1998 movie "This Is My Father"'s Aidan Quinn was the perfect bad guy in "Stakeout", this time without the heavy brogue. What can I say, it's a great movie, give it a try if you like the actors.

Great Movie but the DVD offers nothing!
I awaited this DVD release along with the sequel and Down and Out in Beverly Hills. All three (3) of these movies offer nothing, not even the trailers were on these DVD's. Very dissapointing. Instead they put 2 trailers of other releases they have coming out.

Anyhow, even though the DVD's have no special features what so ever, they do however have pretty good picture and sound. Stakeout has always been one of my favorite movies for it's campy-ness and I'm glad Touchstone finally dedicated to release it.

5 Stars for the Movie
4 Stars for the Picture & Sound
1 Star for the Special Features

If you haven't seen this movie, pick it up.

Wisdom
Released in VHS Tape by Warner Home Video (06 January, 1998)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Emilio Estevez
Starring: Emilio Estevez and Demi Moore
Average review score:

Wisdon is as Wisdom was...
I got to thinking about this movie the other day while cracking open my new "High School Reunion Collection' DVDs. The last time I saw it was on ridiculously late night television about ten years ago. Even on awfully edited television it still had a certain rawness to it. It wasn't bad raw but, good raw. Very intense. Not to mention close to home with the Farm issues. (Nebraska ex-pat here.) Sadly, Wisdom is as Wisdom was...only available on VHS. Emilio! Bring this back to us on DVD!

Surprisingly Good Effort
Emilio Estevez showed talent above the rest of his Brat Pack peers in 1985 when he wrote That Was Then, This is Now, a decent film. But he topped that with this mini tour de force in Wisdom. Which he wrote, directed and co-starred in (with then fiance Demi Moore). The film isn't a masterpiece, and was generally panned by critics. But it has a very gritty feel that seemed to capture a bridge between the present day emptiness of youthful adolesence and what happens when fantasy goes awry.

Some may look at the film like a weak, modern recreation of Badlands, or Bonnie and Clyde, and Estevez could have really pulled the emotions further in showing the characters attempt at good deeds was mistaken, then ultimately malicious. He takes the film in that direction, but it's almost like he didn't want to go over the edge, so he backed off some. However, what the film attempts to do, to create a darker look at the post teen world, in an era when John Hughes films dominated the landscape, it does capture quite well. And is tinged with a certain hopelessness that will stand with you.

It's a shame that Estevez wasn't more highly praised for his efforts here, and the film should be released on DVD, hopefully with commentary by Emilio himself.

Underrated - Great movie with an important message
I was working in a video store in 1987 when this movie was released on VHS - otherwise I might have never even heard of it. I was intrigued to learn that Emilio had written and directed it himself.

Having recently seen Emilio, Demi, et al in "St. Elmo's Fire", I was anxious to view this film. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's interesting to note the scenes that Emilio *directly* borrowed from the film in which his father starred with Sissy Spacek - "Badlands". The premise of the movie is different, but the story does revolve around a young couple "on the lam". I say "Bravo!" to Emilio's first foray into movie-making. I was and still am very impressed!

Now, let's just get it released on DVD and I'll be even happier!!!

National Lampoon's Loaded Weapon 1
Released in VHS Tape by New Line Studios (08 July, 1997)
MPAA Rating: PG-13 (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Gene Quintano
Starring: Emilio Estevez and Samuel L. Jackson
Average review score:

Why do I make myself watch these films?
OK, I enjoyed this, but its not the kind of film I would watch again. Having not seen Lethal Weapon, most of this film went straight over my head. It also gets a lower mark for the severe lack of extras on it. OK, so some DVDs don't have a lot of extras, but I like even a theatrical trailer to give me some insight into the film before watching it! It's also very short, only 73 minutes, when the credits appear.

When Whoopi Goldberg & Tim Curry appeared, this lit up, and I figured this film would be worth my while watching. But it's another one of those films where you play spot the star/film. And having just watched one of those (Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back), it does get tiresome. But I had fun.

This film spoofs obviously Lethal Weapon, & Silence Of The Lambs, but also Basic Instinct, Speed, Die Hard, & Wayne's World, were the ones I managed to spot. Also turning up was Engineer Scotty from Star Trek (James Doohan), the cop from Sister Act 2, Charlie Sheen, William Shatner, Erik Estrada from CHiPs, Jon Lovitz (who I know from Friends), and also Bruce Willis. OK, I can't get anyone to confirm this, and his name didn't appear in the credits, but isn't it him? My dad says it's a very good look-a-like - come on, no one's that good!

The funny bits are few & far between. The bits I did find funny are in the convenience store at the beginning (CCTV camera, and leaflets from the magazines), and the answering machine with Whoopi Goldberg.

This is a guy's film - I groaned extremely loudly, at the spoof of Basic Instinct, and the beaver shot.

great
funny movie with a allstar cast. this one is a rip off of man things like Lethal Weapon, Basic Instinct and basically Lethal Weapon. Whoopi is killed by Tim Curry and Samuel L. Jackson with his new ticking time bomb partner Emilio Estevez are on the case and it involves girl scout cookies. following an array of wacky characters like William Shatner, Phil Hartman, Corey Feldman, Denis Leary, Denise Lee Richards, Bill Nunn, Dr. Joyce Brothers, Charles Napier, Erik Estrada, Larry WilCox, Paul Gleeson, Jon Lovitz, Scotty from Star Trek, Kathy Ireland, J.T. Walsh, Charlie Sheen, F. Murray Abraham and a funny bit involving blowing up Bruce Willis' trailer home. wacky and fun

Not Bad...Not Bad at All
Not the greatest movie I've ever seen...but Tim's performance saves it. Also, it has its funnier parts...though they're few and far between.
I was overjoyed when Tim's character came back to life...I thought: Finally, a movie he's not going to die in!
But then the damn directors made a liar out of me and killed my poor little Englishman...life's so unfair!
But I digress, if you're into slapstick comedy rather than word of mouth comedy, I recommend this movie.
You'll enjoy it, but I doubt you'll actually rent it a second time.

Men At Work (Amazon.com Exclusive)
Released in VHS Tape by MGM/UA Video (20 February, 2001)
MPAA Rating: PG-13 (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Emilio Estevez
Starring: Emilio Estevez and Charlie Sheen
Proving that a little success can be a dangerous thing, Emilio Estevez parlayed his early-'80s "brat-pack" fame into a dubious directorial career, beginning with 1986's Wisdom (in which Estevez costarred with then-fiancée Demi Moore), and resuming with this sophomore-effort 1990 comedy that benefits most from Emilio's teaming with brother Charlie Sheen. (Close your eyes and listen: their voices sound like their dad Martin Sheen after inhaling helium.) The brothers play a pair of garbage collectors who discover a body on their daily rounds, and the corpse draws them into a scheme involving corrupt politics, illegal hazardous-waste dumping, and a lovely neighbor (Leslie Hope) with connections to the dead guy. Add a wacko Vietnam vet (Keith David), an unsuspecting pizza deliverer (Dean Cameron), and a pair of overzealous cops, and you've got a comedy that lazily rambles from one lightweight scene to another. It's way too loose to have any noteworthy quality, but that's also part of the movie's low-brow appeal: Estevez and Sheen play well together, and this is just their way of goofing off with Hollywood money. With a sharper script and an experienced director, Men at Work could have paid off handsomely. As it is, these sibling antics are amiable enough, and the early-'90s fashion crimes (like Charlie's "dork knob" ponytail) offer an amusing diversion from the lamest gags. --Jeff Shannon

Better Than It Sounds
Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez have fallen on hard times lately. But it is not for lack of charisma. They really are funny guys. Being brothers enhances their chemistry even further. The best scenes in the movie are the ones in which Sheen and Estevez are just being Sheen and Estevez. The plot is silly, and the movie does not take itself completely seriously. It is nice, dumb fun. Definitely not high class cinema, but from these guys, who was expecting it?

Men At Work...A Comedy that Works!
MEN AT WORK is a comedy that doesn't try to be over the top, but it is funny on the grounds of the engaging chemistry of the two stars Emilio Estevez (also the director) and Charlie Sheen. They are two garbage men, who find a dead body during one of their pick-ups. They realize it is the guy they had shot with a pellet rifle whom they observed abusing his girfriend (Leslie Hope) who lives in the apartment across the street form their own apartment. Knowing that their pellet gun could not be the cause of the dead man's demise, they suspect the girl and do their own investigation. Then, they get caught in a web of an evil politician (John Getz) and his illegal waste operation. Add a couple of bargain basement hit-men, a distrurbed Vietnam vet (Keith David), a couple of rival garbage men, two trigger happy cops, a pizza deliverer (Dean Cameron), a few rent-a-cops, and dozen or so waste handler's, and you have a film that is fun to watch. A comedy with plausibility and a plot that's not too complicated. Overall,a small and forgotten gem that, with repeated viewing, grows on you.

a comedy classic
I've been waiting for this to be released on DVD. The movie is a hoot!!! Especially love the "Louis" character. "I hate cops- I hate rent-a cops too". "Now if Mr.Sneaky-man would come up here and stand next to Mr.Bone-head". I just received my copy the other day, and was wondering if anyone else has this problem.......there is no chapter index sheet in the box. Just the DVD.

D2 - The Mighty Ducks
Released in VHS Tape by Disney Studios (16 June, 1998)
MPAA Rating: PG (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Sam Weisman
Starring: Emilio Estevez and Kathryn Erbe
This follow-up to the surprise Disney hit about a hockey team of misfits brings Emilio Estevez back to the role of the kids' yuppie coach. This time, Estevez assimilates his Ducks into the higher-stakes Team USA in the Junior Goodwill Games, an opportunity that could bring fame and money. Entirely perfunctory, this sequel is basically an excuse to revisit the eccentricities of some of the younger characters, extend some of their conflicts into adolescence, and showcase their allegedly entertaining but ethically dubious abilities on the ice. Estevez is okay, but even he had enough after this movie. --Tom Keogh
Average review score:

"Ducks 2: Duck Soup"
The hockey purist could be offended at the on ice antics of "Team USA" as it takes on opponents in an international competition. From the new character "Cowboy," rope tying opponents to figure skater Ken Wu trying to get through the defense with a "triple axle," it is as far fetched as any youth sports movie has ever gotten. Estevez was clearly in this only for the money and if you notice "Team USA," supposedly the best teen players in the country, doesn't even skate that well!

The rivalry between Estevez and the Icelandic coach is believable and Disney including some inner city kids to develop the plot is admirable. The ending is enjoyable especially when a least likely character is allowed to shine. Kids, hockey fans or not, will love it and that is who the "Duck" series was designed for. As an adult you really better suspend your belief in this one. But then again, isn't that what movies are supposed to be about anyway?

THE BEST OF THE MIGHTY DUCKS!
I think D2: THE MIGHTY DUCKS is definitely the best film out of the whole series. I mean, the original and D3 were great, but this one is definitely #1! Bombay and the Ducks are back and this time, they have been asked to represent the USA hockey team for the Junior Winter/Summer Olympics held in L.A.! They also get some new teammates, as well, and they are all from different states in the country. At first, the Ducks and the new players can't seem to get along. But of course, soon they become fast friends.

When they get to the Olympics, they face their biggest rival team - last year's championship team from Iceland. They are tough, bigger, faster, and much more competive, especially their coach. The USA team does very well in the beginning, but then they loose to the Iceland team bad. Soon, all Coach Bombay cares about is winning - and the USA team can't stand that! So when they take a day off, they meet up with these street hockey kids who teach them how to really play hockey and what it really takes to be a team. And their spirits suddenly start to grow, especially after Coach Bombay apologizes to them for acting like such a jerk. Finally, it is the championships and they have to face Iceland once again. Do they win? Why, of course!

D2 is much more hilarious than the first, and the kids play more practical jokes and tricks. The hockey games are excellent, even though of course probably most of the hockey players you see on the ice are stunt doubles. Still, a great movie and a must see and a must have if you own and loved the first one! The Quack Attack is back and better than ever!

GREAT MOVIE!
I love this movie! For all us girls there are hot guys in it. Well anyway, if you like hockey buy this movie and you won't be dissapinted!

CHILLS ON HIGH!!!
Sir Anthony Hopkins, Emilio Estevez, Amanda Plummer, and Mick Jagger. The future is polluted but high tech. If you want to live forever, be rich and able to jack = steal from the past a healthy body from its moments just before death. Excellent Film. When Hopkins says "Welcome to my mind!" I felt Hannibal Lecter chills. Loved it!

"I'm ready for that hit between the eyes...."
Alex Furlong (Emilio Estevez) is a race car driver with a beautiful girlfriend (Rene Russo), a good manager (David Johansen), and an up-and-coming career. However, as in most movies, fate moves its huge hands, as Alex is seemingly killed in a crash. End of story? Nope. You see, several tenths of a second before impact, Alex was snatched from the driver's seat and brought to the year 2009 to be used as a new body for a rich guy.
The medical van transporting him is attacked, and Alex escapes. On the run now, Alex must find his girlfriend, now working for a huge corporation, and evade a relentless bonejacker (Mick Jagger) who can collect $7 million by bringing him in.

...Emilio Estevez, Rene Russo, and Anthony Hopkins (as Russo's boss) turn in great performances, and Jagger (in his acting debut) gives a sinister performance as Vacendak, the bonejacker assigned to bring in Alex. The movie is presented in crisp, clear widescreen, with nicely done Dolby Digital 5.1 audio. The extras are sorelym lacking, with the movie's trailer, trailers for other Morgan Creek movies, and a plug for the Morgan Creek website. Two words for this so-called turkey: SPECIAL EDITION!
