Holland-Taylor Movie Reviews

Small, indie movie is delightful romance
Wonderland wondering MORE.
I have watched this movie so many times!!I loved the soundtrack that goes with this movie... the bossa nova south american music was really original and added to it.
I also enjoyed all of the personal ad dating scenes. Even though some of the men were a little bit stereotypical, maybe some of them are really like that... Im sure there are a lot of creepy men out there that put in personal ads, especially the ones who put "walking on the beach" as a favorite thing to do.. I think i remember this from another movie, but some character said, "if everyone likes to walk on the beach, how come you never see any of them out there?" basically, people can be so fake and pretend they are someone else, so this movie captures that whole feeling.
The main character, Erin was my favorite because she was very independent and didn't feel that she was only complete if she had a man. I don't find a lot of women that are like that in real life, so I really admired that her character for that. It's a cool movie, with such a funny cameo by Philip Seymour Hoffman in the beginning (also a great actor---watch everything he has done, especially happiness!)
I totally recommend this movie to anyone who is a bit jaded by love and the idea of soulmates, but who is also dangerously romantic---bad combo!!>

As crictics say... One Fine Movie! The movie has these two parents juggleing their five year old kids for their careers that are on the line. Jack's daughter Maggie (Mae Whitman) gets to follow kittens and be spoiled. While Meline's son (Alex D. Linz) plays with little action figures at work that make her trip and destroy her diagram and keeps slobbering food on Meline's clothes.
This movie is funny and romantic. If you are a person into romantic comody's I suggest this movie. I believe you will be pleased with what you watch. I know I was. It's a movie with wonderful actors that also make a cute couple.

My favorite Jim Carrey movieI am a huge fan of Jim Carrey. All of his movies have been entertaining from "The Mask" and "Dumb and Dumber", to his latest film "Bruce Almighty". However, the film that I enjoyed him the most in, concentrated less on the typical slapstick comedy that one has come to expect from a Jim Carrey film, and more on making you laugh through emotion and subtlety. The story itself is highly original and entertaining. The idea of one man being oblivious to the world aroud him is extremely funny. The fact that he is the center of a TV show only makes it funnier. All of the actors do an outstanding job. Of course Carrey steals the show with Truman. The transition from being naive, to a determined man is amazing. He plays both sides so well. Laura Linney is outstanding as his wife. She must put on the happy homemaker facade and pretend to love Truman. The funniest thing about the character is how she must constantly advertise products with everything that she does. Noah Emmerich is great as his best friend Marlon. Watching him try to convince Truman that it is just his mind playing tricks on him is hillarious. Even when a stage light falls from the sky, or it is sunny at 9:00 p.m., him and the rest of the actors try to convince Truman he is seeing things. Ed Harris does a nice job with Cristof considering the limited amount of screen time he had. It is also dissapointing as well. For such an important character, he has very little to do with the overall story. The rest of the actors in the film also do a great job as well.
"The Truman Show" will make you laugh, and keep you on the edge of your seat, wondering if Truman will ever get out. The ending is very satisfying too. This is definately Carrey's best film. He and the rest of the cast does an amazing job, and really makes the film believeable. The DVD is somewhat dissapointing though. I would have loved to seen a making of featurette. Unfortunately, there is just the movie and the trailer. I have never been able to understand why movie studios feel that offering a trailer as a special feature is an added bonus. If you are going to watch the film, then why would you need to see a movie trailer? This is a must own, but go with the VHS!!

Funny & FreshWitherspoon plays Elle Woods, the beautiful, blonde, rich valley girl who gets dumped by her boyfriend who has made the decision to become more "serious" and study at Law School. After being rejected,, Elle decides to follow him to Law School to win him back. When she gets there, she realizes he has a new girlfriend, who is played by Selma Blair (Reese's co-star in Cruel Intentions). This sets up an amazingly fresh and bright comedy that is sure to be remembered by many people.
Elle quickly becomes a very likeable character. She stands up for what she believes in and says some of the things that we wish we could to others, but don't. She's very much of an outcast when she arrives at Harvard and despised by most, but as the movie continues, she slowly begins winning over almost every character in the movie.
Legally Blonde is a very bright and smart comedy, with a hip and talented cast. It contains great morals, a great story, and fun dialogue. And when it's over, no matter what mood you were in before, you're guaranteed to feel better about yourself afterwards. This movie is definitely worth a look.
There are many great extras contained on the DVD, such as a Hoku music video, deleted scenes, and two featurettes. The first featurette informs you of the process of finding the right 'blonde' for Reese, and the second informs you of how the movie actually was made. You can't miss this.
Witherspoon showcased as a talented leadThe story is cute, but lacks the insight and nuance of "Clueless". However, Witherspoon outdoes Alicia Silverstone's performance with her sheer energy and determination. Both were excellent, but Witherspoon is the more dynamic.
The acting by the ensemble of supporting actors is very good and helps Witherspoon look that much better. The cast is rich in aspiring actors with strong talent and little name recognition. Of particular note are the performances of Selma Blair and Luke Wilson. Blair plays the uppity girlfriend of Elle's former boyfriend Warner (Matthew Davis). Blair is wonderfully condescending and catty throughout most of the film, but shows the ability to move into a softer, more likeable portrayal by the end. Wilson's soft spoken demeanor is perfect for his nurturing role in this film. His support is the catalyst that makes Elle's transition work.
Reese Witherspoon has been gradually moving to progressively larger parts for the last ten years, and at age 25 she made the leap to the lead with this film. She definitely makes the most of the opportunity. She simply dominates the entire film with a high energy performance that has as much steel as perfume. She makes Elle as lovable as she is ridiculous, while instilling her with qualities that you can't help but admire as the film progresses. If this is representative of the wattage she will bring to films, then her future is likely to be very bright.
This is not a great film, but it is very charming and watchable. I rated it a 7/10. We may look back on this film as the one that launched a prominent career.
This movie is great!

Excellent family movie - where's the widescreen? As far as the DVD is concerned. I've seen it in this format AND laserdisc and the picture quality and sound are similar. I am very confused, however, why it's not in widescreen format. This fact alone prevents me from giving it a 5 star rating.
Well done Disney!
the rockin movie
An independent movie like this one doesn't have the budget for the gloss and glamor of its big sisters. I personally see this as a refreshing change of pace, because as much as I enjoy the Meg Ryans, Julia Roberts and Cameron Diazes of Tinseltown, I can't transfer their screen behavior to real life.
The sparkling yet down to earth Hope Davis plays Erin, who returns to her downtown Boston home one afternoon to find her activist boyfriend loading up his car. He's leaving her. She is devastated. Being a very intelligent young woman, she supposes that men aren't worth the trouble and that being alone has its rewards. Even as she arrives at these conclusions, her expressive face shows plenty of doubt.
Across town lives Alan [Alan Gelfant], an immensely likable guy in his mid-thirties, who has gone back to school to study marine biology. He's currently a plumber like his Dad, but has come to believe he can improve upon his working-class life. He is a volunteer at the Boston Aquarium. Water, in particular the sea, plays an important part in the movie. Fish do also. You might say that a blowfish named Puff is one of the movie's stars.
One day Erin's ditzy, wealthy mother places an ad in the personal section of a Boston newspaper. The problem with this is that it's about Erin. At first outraged, Erin soon finds herself unable to resist listening to the messages that have been lefted in her voice mail. She decides to respond to a few. One of these involves Alan's brother. The fun has begun.
Wonderland plays out very much like Sleepless in Seattle, because our two lonely hearts keep coming very close to meeting - but don't - for much of the film.
The director and the stars are very assured and professional. They keep the humor rather dry. This is not intended to be a broad comedy. In fact, it explores a philosophical question. Does fate really have a hand in the events in our lives, or do things happen in a random way?
Next Stop Wonderland is the type of movie that plays especially well in DVD format. It's not a larger than life vehicle, so a big theater screen doesn't add much to it.
