Homer & Eddie
Released in VHS Tape by Hbo Studios (27 August, 1996)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Andrei Konchalovsky
Average review score:

It's The Feel Bad Movie Of The Year!
Dustin Hoffman in "Rain Man," Tom Hanks in "Forrest Gump" and Russell Crowe in "A Beautiful Mind" brilliantly portrayed mentally challenged characters, and each film won the Academy Award for Best Motion Picture. In this movie, Jim Belushi plays Homer, a mildly retarded man. He is portrayed as a pathetic caricature, not as a realistic character. Whoopie Goldberg plays Eddie, a patient that escaped from a mental institution, who is dying from an inoperable brain tumor. Spouting profanities and shooting clerks dead in a series of robberies, Eddie is one of the most unlikable characters ever created. Most disappointing of all, blonde bombshell Angelyne is only seen in a cameo lasting a few seconds. Jim Belushi and Whoopie Goldberg have no chemistry together, and their characters are too mismatched to make their growing friendship believable. This movie fails to create an emotional bond between the viewer and the characters. When Eddie is shot dead, the only thing I felt was relief, because I knew this film was finally coming to an end. "Homer And Eddie" should have won the Razzie Award for Worst Motion Picture Of The Year.

It's NOT a comedy movie !
Don't get mistaken. It is NOT a comedy movie. Rather a road movie with a bitter taste to it. As Whoopie Goldberg plays a vagrant with a tumor in her head which is slowly killing her and Belushi plays a retard who's in search of his parents who have left him behind in hospital 14 years ago.

This is rather a drama and shows superior acting skills by both main characters. Definitely worth an oscar (but never nominated). So don't go thinking this is a family movie that you can watch during christmas eve !! It is NOT.

Great Movie!!
If you like James Belushi and Whoopi Goldberg then you'll love this comedy that's about 2 travelers. It's a must see!!

Saturday Night Live: The Best of Chris Rock
Released in VHS Tape by Vidmark/Trimark (12 August, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Directors: Claude Kerven, Dave Wilson, Beth McCarthy-Miller, James Signorelli, and Paul Miller
Comedian Chris Rock spent several seasons on Saturday Night Live, and this compilation tape of his best moments showcases his considerable talents while unintentionally highlighting how uneven the show itself is. Even in a video selected to showcase Rock alone, he is all too often mired as the second or third banana in an SNL skit. But there are, thankfully, plenty of opportunities in this video for Rock to shine without being upstaged by other performers or left adrift by limp writing. When he appears behind the "Weekend Update" desk to deliver an editorial commentary or a news report, Rock put his considerable skills as a comedian to perfect use. And in the skits where the focus is on him, he proves himself to be adept at characterizations, such as when he dons a colossal Afro wig to become radical talk show host Nat X, host of "The Dark Side." One peculiar surprise about the video: some of the language in "Def Jam" parodies that was bleeped out for the broadcast of SNL is here presented uncensored, so while this is Chris Rock delivering perhaps his cleanest material, a few choice words are nonetheless delivered loud and clear. --Robert J. McNamara

SNL (...)
This collection is an insult to Chris Rock. SNL has succeeded in even making the greatest comedian of our time look bad. Rent this first to see how bad it is before you waste your money as well as your time. Get his concert and HBO shows. This is what happens when you put a comedian from the wild in a SNL cage.... he dies. Thank God he was able to be reborn on HBO. It's just not funny. Sorry.

Not too bad
This is a pretty funny DVD full of some of Chris Rock's best skits on SNL. But, beware, some of the recurring skits aren't featured at their best on this disc. The Nat X skit was the one from when he hosted the show, and definitely not as good as the ones when he was a cast member.

Great Material Makes Up for lackluster DVD
Here are the sketches that are included in this DVD:
Monologue (When Chris hosted SNL)
2 Live Crew Party
Hangin' With MTV: Big Toe Song
Weekend Update: Taxes & Crime
"I'm Chillin'"
Russel Simmons Def Magic Show Jam
The Bensonhurst Dating Game
Def Emergency Room Jam
Weekend Update: Black Vice President
The Dark Side with Nat X - guests: Jesse Jackson & Mike Tyson
Nike Turkey (Pump It Song)
Sinatra Group
Weekend Update: Back To School/Charlie Brown
Proud Pattersons
The Survive The Apollo Guide for White Men
Weekend Update: MLK Holiday In Arizona
Perspectives
Not Getting Any
Ernies Store
Credits / Monologue from SNL 25th Anniversary

Extras
The Dark Side with Nat X - guests: Jimmy Smith / Jerry Coony(?)
Weekend Update: Racial Sterotypes/Names for White People
Sketch/Production Credits

The best sketches by far on here are the Weekend Update's and the Nat X's. The sketches in which Rock plays 'second/third' bannana are 2 Live Crew, Sinatra, Not Getting Any, and Bensonhurst. 2 Live Crew and Not Getting Any aren't even funny. And Ernies is a pretty bad sketch.

The rest on this DVD are pure gold. The Extras are great too. SNL should just include more.

Saturday Night Live - Christmas
Released in VHS Tape by Vidmark/Trimark (10 October, 2000)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Directors: Claude Kerven, Dave Wilson, Beth McCarthy-Miller, James Signorelli, and Paul Miller
The best Christmas material from two-and-a-half decades of Saturday Night Live is collected in this video, which gets off to a raucous start by presenting Chevy Chase's (literally) unbalanced rendition of President Gerald Ford decorating the White House Christmas tree. A number of memorable Christmas satires appear, including Eddie Murphy's spoof of Mr. Rodgers, Ana Gasteyer appearing in the "Martha Stewart Topless Christmas Special," and even Adam Sandler's "Hanukkah Song." Some of the best material is from the show's early freewheeling years: a classic bit with guest Candice Bergen, playing an uptight newswoman, being suitably offended while interviewing an irresponsible and utterly sleazy toy manufacturer (Dan Ackroyd); John Belushi doing a silent yet brilliant turn as a hard-drinking department store Santa; and the entire original cast taking part in an elaborate (by the show's early standards) production number. Also appearing in the video compilation are cast members Bill Murray, Jane Curtin, Phil Hartman, Mike Myers, and Dana Carvey, as well as guests Steve Martin, Danny DeVito, Paul Simon, William Shatner, and Alec Baldwin (who visits the NPR ladies to deliver a wickedly deadpan talk about his Christmas balls). Saturday Night Live has been notoriously uneven over the years, but this video is a full stocking of consistently inspired writing and performances. --Robert J. McNamara

Not worth purchasing
I'm a big fan of SNL, but most of the skits on this video weren't that funny. Adam Sandler singing the Hanukkah Song, and Chris Farley as Santa were the only two skits that made me laugh. I bought this as a gift for my father-in-law and I wish I hadn't! Maybe next year I'll buy him the Best of Chris Farley.

Funny, but no Hanukah Harry!
This video was pretty funny. It had mostly newer stuff. I would have liked to have seen stuff from the earlier years. Also, a sticker on the package advertises that the Hanukah Harry skit with Jon Lovitz is on the video, but mysteriously it is nowhere to be found! I am certain there is more material they could have put on this 65 minute video.

SNL XMAS PAST AND PRESENT. a little more past please!
A good look at the best xmas skits from SNL, except they forgot
Hannakuh Harry & Gumby's X-Mas Special. It was great though to see Chevy Chase (as President Ford) open the collection, with other appearences by the BEST & ORIGINAL Not Ready For Prime Time Players Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Jane Curtain, Garrett Morris, Gilda Radner and Second Season replacement Bill Murray.
Why Wont Lorne Micheals release SNL Season by season? It would be great to catch ALL the great performances, like the 1st season,PLEASE! Hail Chevy Chase!

K-9 - P.I.
Released in VHS Tape by Umvd (07 January, 2003)
MPAA Rating: PG-13 (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Richard J. Lewis
Starring: James Belushi
Average review score:

James Belushi can't carry everyone
You'll notice on the DVD jacket that there is only one name - James Belushi. That's because he is the only person in the movie that is actually worth watching.

Summary:
Detective Thomas Dooley (James Belushi) has just retired, but on the way home from his retirement party he and his police dog, Jerry Lee, come across a robbery. As they try to stop it they are eventually prevented from catching the thieves by the FBI who draw their guns on him (for some strange reason even though he's a cop and a bunch of his colleagues show up as well - we never know why the FBI comes). Anyway, in chasing the thieves, Jerry Lee happens to swallow a computer chip that was essential to the criminal's plans.

Dooley, as a result of his involvement in the theft, has his pension suspended until the case is solved, forcing him to get back involved. But, before he can get back involved he studs out Jerry Lee and that leads him to a woman that he eventually kind of hooks up with, but that is how the movie ends.

The rest of the story is kind of lame. Dooley has a Private Investigator's license (thus the P.I. in the title) and thus advertises his services in the paper. The first person to call him just happens to be the lover of the thief that got away, but we don't find that out until nearly the end of the movie, unless you are thinking while you're watching it, then it becomes apparent when she first knocks on his door.

Dooley has to deal with the FBI who are tailing him to see how he was involved with the theft in the first place - results in funny interactions, but otherwise deadens the story. He also has to deal with his ex-captain and his former colleagues who all seem to think he's a dink or something. All we got is a stereotypical captain's role where the captain is always mad. I'd like to see a happy captain some time.

Eventually the thief/lover of the woman that hires Dooley is killed by the woman and Dooley catches the woman that hired him as the real culprit behind the theft.

My Comments:
A sequel that never should have been made. There are innumerable forced scenes. A lot of the scenes are trying to get us to sympathize with a dog that doesn't want to have sex; please! If it wasn't for James Belushi being somewhat funny and bumbling, this movie would be absolute trash. As it is, Belushi strains his hardest to carry a lackluster cast of pathetic actors and a terrible story line. The result, a very mediocre movie that really isn't worth most people's time.

A Cop & his Dog: A Funny Pairing
In K-9, James Belushi plays Detective Dooley, who with his police dog, Jerry Lee, solves crimes in a manner that brings out the humorous best of both actors, human and canine. K-9 was a big enough hit to spawn a sequal K-9: P. I., that permits both Belushi and Jerry Lee to cover much the same sort of predicaments that they faced in the original. This is not to say that the sequel is lacking in humor. In fact, in some ways it is better than the original. Belushi seems to have grown comfortable with the persona that he has developed over a movie career that spans more than 70 films. In most of them he plays essentially the same lovable goof that most audiences can relate to. As Detective Dooley, Belushi faces a new kind of enemy: retirement.

As the viewer watches Dooley relate to his sudden forced inactivity, a bell resonates in whose clinging-clanging reminds that viewer that not all retirements are calm and worry-free. What does an ex-cop and his canine friend do when bereft of his sanctioned badge and gun? Why, simply carry on and solve crimes in the same way that they did when they were getting paid to do so. After watching the two relate and communicate, Dooley with words, Jerry Lee with head-wagging, the viewer sees the charm and comraderie that is evident between man and dog. At times, I could have believed that I was watching Toody and Muldoon from the old CAR 54 tv series. The plots of such movies are minimal, of course, designed mostly to place the two en medias res of a dangerous situation. In this case, Dooley comes into possession of a stolen new generation computer chip which, in the wrong hands, can revolutionize American technological society. Along the way, he begins a romance with two women, one of whom is not what she appears to be. The best moments are not between man and woman, but between man and dog. The many scenes of humor will certainly resonate with dog lovers. This is not a great movie, nor does it try to be. What it does is to remind the audience that the truly funny moments of life are just as likely to be observed only by a faithful dog than by an applauding audience in a nightclub.

Hilarious, ridiculous, fun
This movie was funny just plain enjoyable! It wasn't quite as good as K-9, but who really expected that? Jim Belushi is always a winner, and always pleases me with an enjoyable movie!

The crazy antics the two go through, in their job as private investigators is just plain hilarious... there are times when things are just a little too silly... but that's the charm of Jim Belushi films anyways! Like who in the world would take a bath with a dirty dog???

If you are looking for a silly fun film, this is it!

Made Men
Released in VHS Tape by Columbia/Tristar Studios (13 June, 2000)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Louis Morneau
James Belushi is a former gangster in the Federal Witness Protection Program, hiding in the small redneck town of Harmony. Skipper, the mysterious mob boss Belushi worked for, discovers his whereabouts and sends four thugs to collect the $12 million Belushi had been stealing from him, and then whack him. Cross and double-cross ensues, as the fast-talking, street-smart Belushi cons his way from one harrowing bind to another. Throw into the mix a crooked redneck sheriff (Timothy Dalton) and the Belushi character's wife with questionable loyalties (Vanessa Angel), and you've got a fast-paced action comedy that keeps you guessing up to the end. The acting is solid, including Jamie Harris (son of Richard) as a British mobster with a knack for torture. One of the least appreciated components of film storytelling is pace, and Made Men has an impeccable knack for pacing. Kudos to director Louis Morneau (Bats) and veteran action film producers Joel Silver and Richard Donner for making this gem, which should have seen the dark light of the theater instead of being shuffled off direct to video. James Belushi deserves mention for a terrific performance, at once serious, convincing, and funny. --Jim Gay

"The Mod Squad meets Deliverance"
You probably didn't catch this hit and miss action film in theatres as it took the direct-to-video route. That is a bit surprising, because it is at least as good as much of the action fodder that seems to crowd the multiplex. But, now you can experience it on DVD with a nice anamorphic widescreen transfer and great sound editing.

The film involves twelve million dollars and a big mouth in the witness protection program who stole it. There are corrupt cops, trustworthy criminals and untrustworthy spouses. To go into it more would be to rob the film of its strongest element, Screenwriter Robert Franke's clever story twists. Aside from that and some nice photography, the film comes across as derivative and unsatisfying. Jim Belushi is not likable enough for the viewers to want him to succeed and Timothy Dalton (with a wincing Southern accent) belongs in the major miscasting hall of fame. And often story points are dropped when it seemed convenient.

But, Made Men is at its heart an action film. Even so, the action is small and intimate (What else would you expect in an extreme backwoods town). MADE MEN doesn't have the wow of other Joel Silver and Richard Donner produced films, but is at times sufficient.

Made Men for DVD
The only reason I bought this movie is because of all the hype around it(Richard Donner and Joel silver produced it). These guys have done some of the best action movies to date(The Matrix, Lethal Weapons). So I couldnt resist seeing this movie. However this was a entirely differnt type of movie. The acting was good, and the story was decent, but dont be fooled by the hype around it, there are only two big shootouts in the entire movie, which was disapointing coming from Donner and Silver. There wasnt even a big action scene between the villian and good guys. You would think they could come up with a better climax! Any how the movie is entertaning and is good enough to put in your action video collection. P.S. This movie has great picture quality and its anamorphic widescreen!

Action, double-crossings, and $12 million bucks!
Well, it is defintely action packed! To add to it, Vanessa Angel is always a sight to see and Belushi (just as Will Smith) has to put some of his comical wit throughout the flick! After being placed in the Federal Witness Protection Program, Belushi starts making plans with wifey Angel and some stolen bucks($12 mill) until the feds, the cops, the mob and some backwoods buddies start coming after him. Good lazy Sunday (early) afternoon flick to watch before a baseball or football game

Joe Somebody
Released in VHS Tape by Fox Home Entertainme (27 January, 2004)
MPAA Rating: PG (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: John Pasquin
Starring: Tim Allen
It's brains over brawn as Tim Allen reunites with The Santa Clause director John Pasquin for this amiable comedy about a devoted dad who almost lets his fists do the talking. After being humiliated by the office bully (played by The Tick's Patrick Warburton), corporate nebbish Joe Scheffer (Allen) vows revenge. He becomes an office celebrity, taking kung fu lessons with a has-been action star (Jim Belushi) and preparing for a rematch against his tormentor. Kid stuff, to be sure, but Joe Somebody benefits from Allen's Everyman appeal, especially when he's getting his values adjusted by a caring colleague (Julie Bowen, from TV's Ed), or trying to make good with his daughter (Hayden Panettiere) and ex-wife (Kelly Lynch). The comedy is pure vanilla, and the good-guy lessons are learned with bland, family-fare efficiency, but the Allen-Bowen romance is gently engaging, and Allen's flair for slapstick doesn't go to waste. As a pacifist hero, this Joe is somebody to root for. --Jeff Shannon

It Was Pretty Darn Good!
I saw a sneak preveiw for Joe Somebody in the theatres and thought that it was very very bad.But since then I have been talking about the film and now I think it is pretty good and probally will by it.Tom Allen has been on a really good movie spree with this and Big Trouble.Joe Somebody is worth seeing.

The Plot:Tim Allen plays Joe who is a good natured guy who has been working in his buniness for the past 10 years. His wife divorced him and his daughter is with her mother and Joe doesn't see her all the time.On Take Your Daughter to Work Day a worker who has been working there for 2 years parks in the ten year parking lot played by Patrick Warberton. When the 2 year worker hits Joe in the parking lot Joe spends his week drowing out his sorrows.Joe begins to exercise and decides to have a rematch with him.The rest of the movie shows how he gets ready for the fight.Untill the big day comes...

Joe Somebody is a good family film that got bad reveiws and should have gotton better. This movie will definatly be in my DVD collection.

ENJOY!

a good family film
Tim Allen gives a good spazaz to Joe in this movie that makes it funny. Jim Belushi is great as the person who trains Joe in the ways of self defense. cute and not so crude like most comedys which crudeness ans sickness makes it downfall, but y'all enjoy Allen. for fans of the tool man and Belushi

A hardy laugh with Tim Allen, a more mature, seasoned actor
This movie is a pleasant, refreshing surprise. It's good to see Tim Allen again in a feature film, looking a little older, a little more seasoned and thoughtful in his acting. (He's also gotten pretty buff for the role too.) From the start, the musical score gave the gave the movie a sense of time and motion. Jim Belushi was classic in his smooth, no-nonsense way. Some of the interaction between him and Tim Allen was priceless footage. They worked off each other well. Julie Bowen 's role sort of hinted at the "ditzy blonde" initially, but then settled into a deeper character as the plot developed. Greg Germann was well-casted as her finkish boss. Wolfgang Bodison lit up the screen with his corporate look and new found friendship with the lead character. Patrick Warburton is one of my favorites anyway and its good to see him in more and more roles lately. The casting was a refreshing mix of personalities we haven't seen before and they played well together and shared the screen equitably. Their chemistry was palpable and very funny.
The look of the film was genuine, especially the corporate pharmaceutical world.
As for the story line and the comedy. I had some great laughs, good, hardy guffaws at some of the scenes. A few favorites to look for are the Target scene and the "squash" game. Very creative. Also loved the disclaimers mentioned on the pharmaceutical television ads. Some of the comedic timing was fantastic and well placed when the movie took a dramatic turn and threatened to get too serious.
The story left you feeling good and mindful about what it really means to be "Somebody". I like going to a movie, laughing hard, morally recharged, and leaving with some new joke material to tell people at the office.
