Released in VHS Tape by Columbia/Tristar Studios (25 May, 1999)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Ringo Lam
Starring: Ringo Lam, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Natasha Henstridge, and Jean-Hugues Anglade
When a kickboxing police inspector is murdered, his kickboxing twin brother infiltrates the Russian mob in order to see justice meted out--as painfully as possible. A slimmed-down Jean-Claude Van Damme is surprisingly effective as the lead(s), but the real star here is gritty Hong Kong director Ringo Lam (probably best known for City on Fire, the film that inspired Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs), who makes a lethal American debut with this hard-edged, convoluted film, which uses the identical-sibling gimmick to considerably darker effect than the goofball Double Impact. Some incredible stunt work and a terrifically ruthless final reel make this underrated action film a winner, although fans of Species may be somewhat disappointed that costar Natasha Henstridge never fully displays the assets that made her famous. --Andrew Wright

utterly Van Damme's best
Van Damme has Derailed and went In Hell for some of his career, but this one I would say is his best, well next to Universal Soldier and Bloodsport I'd say its right up there with them. basically about Van Damme getting killed and then Van Damme coming into his brothers life. fast action and a good finale make this worth while

Van Damme's best movie
I am a fan of action movies, but I've found some of Van Damme's previous flicks (most notably, Knock Off), to be below average. After seeing this movie on TV, however, I was quite impressed and ended up buying it.

As with most action movies, this one features a hero (Van Damme) who has to kick some butt, aided by a beautiful girl (Natasha Henstridge). The movie starts off with a pretty good car chase, followed by lots of scenes with guns firing and martial arts sequences. The plot isn't extensive -- Van Damme's character's twin brother is killed and he now assumes his twin's identity, only to be hounded by the Russian mafia and corrupt FBI agents.

I've only seen the VHS version, so unfortunately I can't comment on the DVD sound and video quality. Nevertheless, this is a good standard action flick -- in my opinion, Van Damme's best movie (or at least it rivals Bloodsport), and I recommend it for any action movie fan.

A great movie by Van Damme, and a BEAUTIFUL ACTRESS
The movie is very action packed. The Movie has a plot-Van Damme has to stop drug traffikers from getting their way in society. There are fight scenes, and they are good. The woman actress is a very beautiful woman with a good body, and has a very beautiful image. She knows how to act. I recommend this film to all races, Anglo people, Latin People, Asian People, etc. Van Damme[Jean Claude Van Varenberg]is a fantastic actor who should receive an oscar for his fine performances in most of his films. Some of his films are average, but those that are good, are good. Many people might cut down this actor, because they are envious of the fact that he is gifted by life, and he is a good actor, and he has good love scenes with pretty girls [in the movies], and has pretty women in this country and around the globe who love him alot.

Universal Soldier
Released in VHS Tape by Artisan Entertainment (22 July, 1997)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Roland Emmerich
Starring: Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren
Director Roland Emmerich (Independence Day) fortunately brings some crackle to this otherwise unexciting sci-fi drama about two once-dead, biologically-regenerated soldiers (Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren) who turn against one another when Van Damme's character has memories of his previous life. Emmerich is typically only as good as his scripts, and this one is pretty flat. The two stars do exactly what you'd expect them to do and nothing more. The DVD release has a wide presentation, Dolby sound, trailers, notes, and Spanish subtitles. --Tom Keogh

Better than I expected...
It came as no suprise that the critics panned "Universal Soldier" upon it's original theatrical release. I always have hated Roland Emmerich films, this being the only one that I hadn't seen in theaters. But I did want to see it now, and the reson was Ally Walker.
I always liked the television show "The Profiler", which aired for sveral years in the mid 90s, and it's re-runs are on today. I always liked the actress who played "Sam", the main character.
Her name is Ally Walker. She hasn't been in many films, but "Universal Soldier" was one of her first, and most well-known.
... For some reason, the huge movie store in my nieborhood had lost thier copy of it, so I bought it on Amazon.com. I was pleasently suprised by the film, and I wish I would have reserved my judjement.
I give it a solid 3 out of 5 stars. This is because not only is Ally Walker great in it, but Van Damme and especially Lundgren are, too. Dolph Lundgren isn't exactly a great actor, but he does well here. For me, Lundgren's bad guy is the most memorable aspect of this film.
The action scenes are solid, and at times quite unique. The main problem with the film is that there is no real explanation of how or why these UniSols were created. How exactly did they do this (bring the dead back to life)? The answer in the film was too brief and simple.
This film will never be a favorite of any film critic. But, if you are looking for a fun Action-Adventure film with three good performances, look no further than "Universal Soldier".

off the FN' hook awesome !!!!
Universal Soldier is one of the most awesome movies i've ever seen about 2 soldiers in the vietnam war played brilliantly by jean claude van damme and dolph lungren who both kill eachother but are bought back to life years later as UNI SOLS who are programmed to deal with hostage situations, any way after a while van damme starts to regain his memory of who he was when he was human and leaves the UNI SOL camp, the head of the UNI SOL corporation sends all the UNI SOLS out to find van damme, after a while dolph lungren starts to regain his memory as well and takes over the command of the project and commands the UNI SOLS to seek and destroy Van Damme.
With awesome fight scenes and many memorablelines and good special effects Universal Soldier is an explosive action packed ride thats enjoyable from start to the awesome climax of the film. Dolph Lungren is awesome as the evil psychotic sergent.
highly reccomended to buy on DVD with a few extra features like trailers, multiple sound options and a bonus music clip entitled 'body count's in the house' , great song played at the end of the movie.

Top draw entertainment
This Sci-fi action is one of the better of the genre and ask any Dolph or Jean-claude fan then they would probably say this rates as one of their best. The film goes on at a cracking pace and the action is always pulse pounding. You have a bit of humour even from the two mono-sylabic beefcakes and the story although not brilliant and at times predictable is still good enough for an action film. The action is okay and this is probably the best performance from Van-Damme that i have seen even though he was more wooden than a woodland area, and Dolph's performance is great, he far outshines Van-Damme and really does look scarily pyschotic at times, in fact dare i say it he probably shows too much emotion at certain points for a human zombie. If you want to watch an entertaining blokes movie then you can't go too wrong by picking this little gem of a film, in the words of Montgomery Burns, Excellent!

Universal Soldier
Released in VHS Tape by Artisan Entertainment (21 August, 2001)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Roland Emmerich
Starring: Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren
Before they made a mountain of money as the creators of Independence Day and Godzilla, director Roland Emmerich and screenwriter Dean Devlin teamed up for this action flick disguised as a science fiction thriller. Muscle hunks Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren play embattled Vietnam soldiers who killed each other in combat and are revived 25 years later as semi-android "UniSols" in a high-tech army of the near future. Their memories were supposedly wiped clean, but flashbacks occur to remind them of their bitter hatred (Lundgren committed wartime atrocities; Van Damme had tried to stop him), and the warriors resume their tenacious battle while a journalist (Ally Walker) uncovers the truth about the secret UniSol program. With energy to spare, the standard action sequences are adequate for anyone with a short attention span. And besides, with Van Damme and Lundgren in the lead roles, who needs dialogue? --Jeff Shannon

Desert Heat
Released in VHS Tape by Columbia/Tristar Studios (01 May, 2000)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: John G. Avildsen
Versatility, thy name is Van Damme! So Arnold cries in End of Days? Hah! In this relentless revenge actioner, Jean-Claude not only cries, but has a drunk scene, suffers suicidal despair, does a little slapstick, and still manages to flash his ubiquitous butt. Which, of course, is what his legion of fans want to see him kick plenty of (other people's butts, that is; not his own). Van Damme may no longer generate any box-office heat (like 1998's Legionnaire, this bypassed theaters to go straight to video), but he at least gives his fans what they want. Originally titled Coyote Moon, Desert Heat recalls that guilty pleasure Road House, as Eddie Lomax (Van Damme) comes to the rescue of a gallery of colorful characters terrorized by slobbering, drug-dealing bikers and rednecks in a dilapidated desert town. And this time, it's personal. As one denizen ominously observes, "There's trouble on the hoof and it's coming this way" for the three ill-fated bullies who beat up and shot Eddie and left him for dead. Despite its desert setting, Heat is an oasis for great character actors who pick up Van Damme's considerable slack. They include Danny Trejo (Con Air) as Eddie's Native American friend Johnny Sixtoes, Pat Morita (The Karate Kid), Larry Drake (Darkman), Vincent Schiavelli (One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Ghost), Bill Erwin (Candy Stripe Nurses), and luscious Jaime Preslly as Dottie the waitress. The director is credited as Danny Mulroon, a pseudonym for John Avildsen, the Academy Award-winning director of Rocky. His career, too, seems to be on the ropes, but he keeps punching with some welcome eccentric touches. At one point Johnny gives the recuperating Eddie a foot massage (didn't he see Pulp Fiction?). And the script offers such goodies as a lovelorn bus driver (Tom's brother, Jim Hanks) inviting Dottie to see Yojimbo, and one biker's plea for mercy from a local tough: "Jessie, we were in high school together. I signed your yearbook." --Donald Liebenson

Jean Claude Van Damme had a great run in the late 80's and early to mid 90's,but sad to say I think his generation of film has passed, now the majority of action fans want high priced special effects and a superstitious plot.Van Damme has been criticized for having little or no acting skills.Even though none of his films have ever gotten"two thumbs up" he has had still to this day very loyal fans like myself who would watch him before stallone or shwarzenegger because he brings incredible charisma to movies and always does his own fight sequences. Now I guess I'll critizise "Desert Heat".The storyline is a dissapointing one but the supporting cast is farely well in my mind with Jamie Presley. The overall action is alright, but typical Van Damme, nothing that you haven't seen from him before. The acting performance which I look at since some say he can't act is alright in this movie.I think the character doesn't fit Van Damme because he usually deals with more dangerous villians,in this movie he deals with a bunch of low life rednecks. The film is good but not something I'd watch over and over again.

Great Performance by Van Damme!
The movie has a plot, and all the actors do their job very well. The movie does have action. Pretty much this film takes place in a desert, but it is nice. Jean Claude Van Damme's acting is awesome. The women actresses in the movie are really nice looking. The ending of the film I thought was excellent. I recommend this movie to anyone who has not seen it.

A Motorcycle...Van Damme...Alcohol...Does it get any better?
This is one of those Van damme movies where u either hate or u love it...In my case i happen to love it. After riding through the desert....van damme is shot and left to die by some washed up rednecks.. Van damme wakes up and finds his motorcycle stolen!!! Van Damme of course gets a tad angry and goes on a rampage to find his motorcycle....there are motorcycle chases, fighting, rednecks, and whole alot of alcohol...There are also some special apearances like Jamie Presely, and Mr. Miagi from the Karate Kid..Great movie....u might wanna rent it first...unless ur a harcore van damme fan like me....just buy the movie and take my word for it..!!!

Sudden Death Looks Good Right Now
This was definitely not the best movie I've ever seen. The truth
is that it's bad. So bad that I could hardly watch it. I got this
movie because it involved hockey, and I'm a huge fan. It was not
worth it- maybe, just maybe for action fans. But not for an average
watcher...the action was really cheesy for my taste...and only
a few lines grabbed my interest. I know action movies don't
have to be Oscar worthy...but this was a far cry from anything
cinematic. Don't waste your time.

The best Van Damme movie so far
I've seen just about all of Van Damme's movies and I have to say that I think "Sudden Death" is the best one so far. It's not your typical Van Damme movie when you compare it to most of his others. Most of his movies are mainly just fights throughout most of the film, which is always awesome. But I think it's even better when a fighting movie such as "Sudden Death" has more of a plot to it.

Someone kidnaps his daughter and is holding her and the Vice President captive. The man holding them hostage wants a lot of money or he will blow up the whole hockey arena. Van Damme must find a way to get his daughter back while saving everybody else in the arena.

"Sudden Death" is what all the other Van Damme movies isn't. It has a major storyline to it, great special effects, and even a few funny parts such as when Van Damme has to be a real goalie in the game to keep the badmen from finding him. If you're a Van Damme fan or if you like great action movies, "Sudden Death" is definitely for you.

my hometown hockey arena
This is one of my favorite movies and was made in my hometown of Pittsburgh. Jean-Claude Van Damme stars in this action packed thriller about a fire marshall ( Van Damme ) who takes his 2 children to a Stanley Cup hockey game staged at Mellon, then Civic Arena between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Chicago Blackhawks. I have been to this arena many of times and it it fabulous. The oldest arena in the NHL. Anyways, a terrorist ( Powers Booth ) is holding the Vice President and other civilians hostage in the arena owner's box. When Van Damme's daughter is kidnapped by Powers Van Damme makes his way up to the box in a powerful and deadly battle!
