The Believers
Released in VHS Tape by Orion Home Video (06 October, 1998)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: John Schlesinger
Starring: Martin Sheen
John Schlesinger's The Believers, a kind of voodoo twist on Rosemary's Baby, is a horror movie where the echoes of otherworldly menace set the tone of terror, but the real evil comes from the hearts of humans. Recently widowed psychologist Martin Sheen moves to New York with his emotionally fragile son, and they become entwined in an underground cult that practices ritual sacrifice of children. Schlesinger is more interested in the human tale of loss and healing and the desperation of a grieving father fighting to protect his only child from a barbarous cabal. He favors mood and menace over spectacular splashes of horror, and even those moments of occult attack are directed with a sly sense of ambiguity. Though overlong and short on moments of genuine terror, this is a rare horror movie grounded in the palpable and powerful emotions of its characters. --Sean Axmaker

2.5, really...
Martin Sheen stars in this almost-scary voodoo flick. The pacing is just a little slow, and they take too long to s...h...o...w... y...o...u... e...v...e...r...y...t...h...i...n...g... in the santeria and brujeria rituals involved. Still, it's an okay horror flick. But to think: later he became President Bartlett!

Freaky and full of fear film!
This is a pretty scarey movie! The fact that it is a little old does not detract because this could happen anytime in any decade.

In a nutshell; A Father and his young son deal with shattering events in their lives and then are pulled into terrifying dangerous world of cults and ritualistic murder. Will they both come through all this alive?

More, if the above looks exciting:

The father is a police psychologist and there are some strange killings with horrible cult like killings. The father is deemed thru his job to frame a profile of this killer so that they can catch the killer.

As the movie moves forward, things begin to happen that keep you on the edge of your seat and delve you into the strange freakish world of cults and sacrificial killings. Soon this father and his son are pulled into the killer(s) world closer and closer and it will affect them both for the rest of their lives if they live through it!

Shocking surprise of an ending but I won't give any telling details of the movie away in case you want to see this and haven't yet seen the movie on cable or reg. tv. I would rent it before buying because it's a pretty disturbing movie but great if you like really freaky scarey movies.

If you liked Angel heart, you'll love this film. I liked it but it bothered me and I couldn't sleep well for several nights after seeing it the first time.

Good scares? You better believe it!
Of all the occult thillers that I have seen, this one is my most favorite. Not only does this intelligent horror film deliver the goods for nightmares, it carries a large cast of some very fine characters.Martin Sheen, Jimmy Smits, Robert Loggia and Helen Shaver are exceptonally good in their performances. However, the one that will stand out the most is the little known Malick Bowens. Bowens gives the film's villainous role such a demonic prescience, that it could perhaps scare Old Ned himself. This is a great film for those who do not spook easily and/or those with strong stomachs. However, it would be wise to forbid anyone under 15 to view this film because as I said before, it does not skimp on the details of ritualistic murders and supernatural occurences.

Fast forward review
In this collectors item for the lolita sleaze crowd, LB radiates her usual underage perv sleaze aplenty. Unfortunately, it was a TV flick and it's all promise and no delivery, unless you want to count her bare back in the bathing in the creek scene.

So, one star, but it's solely for those putting together LB compilation vids who want all the face and hair shots they can get, and even bought The Exorcist 2 solely for the shots of her in a short dress. Hey, I can sympathize, but it seems a little pricey for that. Well, no accounting for obsession.

Siesta
Released in VHS Tape by Warner Studios (26 March, 1996)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Mary Lambert
Starring: Ellen Barkin and Gabriel Byrne
Average review score:

The Female Version of Jacob's Ladder
Without giving too much of the plot away or the ending, let's just say that this movie comes remotely close to a female film version of Jacob's Ladder with Tim Robbins. Siesta, like Ladder, is also filled with flashbacks, bouts of amnesia, ghastly images of death, and a lot of creepy and haunting characters. The mood is equally somber and melancholy. However, Siesta was out before Jacob's Ladder and also shows the viewer some great summer vacation spots in Spain. Siesta is entertaining for those who like art house films and trendy or worldly settings with off-beat and bizarre characters for an overall unique and strange atmosphere. The action can be stagnating at times. However, the soundtrack by Marcus Miller and the late Miles Davis is a must have for any avid collector of c.d. soundtracks. The album also has a moody, jazzy, Spanish flamenco feel to it...

Siesta
Siesta is one of those odd little pictures that exerts some sort of hypnotic power despite the tired and true denoument which was ripped off from Herk Harvey's Carnival of Souls and then reworked in Voices, Jacob's Ladder and most recently in the excruciatingly obvious The Sixth Sense. If one can forgive this lapse of originality there is plenty to enjoy in Siesta, most notably a wonderful ensemble cast including Jodie foster and Julain Sands. Laden with dreamlike imagery and told just that little bit out of kilter Siesta is part thriller, part horror film, part mystery and every minute entertaining.

gorgeous, hyper-violent, cryptic film experience. . .
Of all the films that I anxiously expect to receive DVD treatment, this film is at the top of my list, personally. I own the video tape edition.

Waking up covered in somone's blood, pining for a lover named augustine, denial of death, narrowly avoiding an incestuous threesome with julian sands, being raped by an obese cabdriver with gold-capped teeth, and a plethera of other odd circumstances visit Ellen Barkin's character in the hyper-violent yet strangely poetic little tale.

I highly recommend this film. Hopefully the dvd will eventually arrive. . .

Thrill Seekers is GREAT!
This is a great movie. From the first time I watched it, I had to see it again and again so whenever it is on TV (which is unfortunately only two or three times a year), I just have to catch it. Thrill Seekers has a lot of action, suspence, and science fiction too which keeps you on the edge of your seat for the whole movie.

caspers best since starship troopers
how good is this film-i caught it on tv and was held captive from start to finish. not only does casper look great he gives a fantastic performance great different story and pretty good effects for a low budget movie-take a chance buy it i guarentee you won't be disappointed

Thrill Seekers
I have to admit the first time I watched this was because Catherine Bell is in it (she's one of my favorite actresses). But while watching it, I got hooked. I like the story, and the characters. The idea of being able to go back in time, and the consequences of changing future events is really interesting. I think that is the second thing that attracted me to the movie. I don't know what else I can say other than this is a great movie. I love everything about it!!

Odd but no disaster
The inherent interest of seeing Marlon Brando (which is what must've drawn actors of the caliber of Sorvino, Sheen, Sutherland and even David Arquette to appear in this oddity) is what keeps audience interest throughout this broad but not unfunny comedy...and Brando fans should rejoice...he is absolutely nutty, but for some reason he seems truly "interested" in the production, having lots of screen time and hamming it up, which is more than you can say for "Christopher Columbus," "Formula," etc. It's hard to classify this as a "good" film, but as an exhibit of the greatest, most tragic actor of our time it has real value, and it's far from the unreleasable disaster you might fear. Take a look.

Brando has fun
The picture is by no means great, but for the first time in decades Brando is clearly having fun here, and there is no actor more enjoyable to watch have fun than Marlon Brando. It is by no means his best performance, but as he chews the scenery, savoring every bite he is a joy to watch.

One Of My Favorites
This is one of my favorite movies. I'm a fan of offbeat comedies like Stay Tuned, FRAUDS, Austin Powers and George of the Jungle, so this fits in my collection perfectly.
Thomas Haden Church really stands out as the dumb, loveable, cuddly Larry Lumstrum. He has an unusual shock of yellowish white hair, odd for him, he has golden blonde hair!
Larry might remind viewers of Lowell Mather from Wings. To tell you the truth, Larry IS Lowell Mather with white hair.
My favorite scene has to be when Larry is stuck in the black Dodge truck as the train is zooming for the vehicle. It reminds one of Marty McFly trying to jump out of the doomed DeLorean near the end of Back To The Future Part III.

Ghost Brigade
Released in VHS Tape by Turner Home Video (25 August, 1998)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: George Hickenlooper
Originally titled The Killing Box, George Hickenlooper's surreal Civil War movie recounts a gruesome (and fictitious) episode in American history in which a phantom army of Confederate and Union soldiers attacked and crucified armies on both sides. Adrian Pasdar plays Captain John Harling, a Union soldier assigned to investigate the Alabama 51st, a Confederate regiment his superiors believe survived a deadly battle and have made strange bedfellows with a group of Union soldiers. Harling enlists the help of former mentor and current POW Colonel Nehemiah Strayn (Corbin Bernsen), the only member of the 51st to have actually survived the attack, in helping him find and deal with his former soldiers. Assisted as well by an African clairvoyant (Cynda Williams) who escaped one of the massacres, Harling and his men search for the ghost brigade, and when they find them, they learn their terrible secret.Lushly photographed and well acted, Hickenlooper's film sustains a spooky atmosphere even though it never provides any truly scary moments. But what makes the film engaging is the mystery behind the murdered soldiers, the underlying issue of racism, and scenes of injured soldiers suffering in a time before anesthetics. While Pasdar's somber narration has more than a passing resemblance to Apocalypse Now (ironically Martin Sheen makes a brief appearance), Brigade has its own merits and is worthwhile entertainment. Fun trivia game: try and spot soon-to-be-famous Billy Bob Thornton, David Arquette, and Matt LeBlanc. --Bryan Reesman

WHERE IS MATT LEBLANC?
I bought the movie for the brilliant Matt LeBlanc and I saw the movie 2 times but, where is Matt?Someone can say to me in what part of the movie appears.
Thanks and I am sorry for my bad english

A little bit of everything..
I was surprised at how much I liked this movie. A mix of ghostlike zombie vampire (that's the best I can do as far as description) soldiers tossed in with a battle. I liked the cast very much. Martin Sheen, Corbin Bernsen, Adrian Pasdar, Cynda Williams, Billy Bob Thorton, and to my delight Dean Cameron, with a somewhat silent but violent role. The acting is amazing, set, costumes, dialogue, everything was fantastic. The thing I liked most about this film is the attention to detail. Each time you watch it you'll notice something you didn't notice before.

Gettysburg Meets Apocalypse Now Meets Dawn of the Dead
Take the movie "Gettysburg". Add in a Martin Sheen narration a la "Apocalypse Now". Sprinkle in a few zombies from "Dawn of the Dead" and you get "Ghost Brigade". This movie is so dang cheesy it's great. It's certainly become a cult favorite among Civil War reenactors--right up there with both "Glory" and "Gettysburg". Interestingly, Martin Sheen reprises his "General Lee" accent in a brief cameo as a Union General. It almost makes you wonder if this movie was part of his contract when he did "Gettysburg". If you like the lighter side of the Civil War, this movie is a keeper.
