Return to Oz (Widescreen Edition)
Released in VHS Tape by Anchor Bay Entertainment (10 August, 1999)
MPAA Rating: PG (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Walter Murch
You don't fool with Mother Nature, spit into the wind, remake Casablanca, or trash the land of Oz. Perhaps that is why the 1985 live-action sequel split critics and audiences alike. The 1939 classic musical is so beloved that it's almost impossible to imagine seeing Dorothy in shock therapy, a crumbled yellow brick road, the ruins of Emerald City, and the Tin Man turned into stone. But L. Frank Baum, the author of the original Oz books, portrayed just that with his continuing stories of Dorothy. When you get by these tough facts, the film version is solid entertainment for the over-7 set.

Dorothy (a 10-year-old Fairuza Balk in her debut) is back in Kansas, where Aunt Em (Piper Laurie) is at the end of her rope: her niece is not sleeping and going on about a place called Oz. Therapy may be the answer, but luckily the scary clinic goes dark before Dorothy can be, er, cured (but the lead-up will scare the munchkins out of most kids). She wakes up in the land of Oz, now in tatters, and searches for its king, the Scarecrow. A new set of friends, including a tin soldier, a talking chicken, and a pumpkin man, help her against new villains, including Princess Mombi (Jean Marsh)--complete with a set of detachable heads--and the evil Nome King (Nicol Williamson with a great assist from Will Vinton's Claymation). The sole directorial effort of Oscar-winning editor Walter Murch is stuffed with marvelous effects that foreshadow later works by Tim Burton and the Henson non-Muppet films. --Doug Thomas

A GOOD CONTINUING SAGA
WHEN I FIRST HEARD OF THIS MOVIE I THOUGHT "OH GOD ANOTHER DOROTHY MOVIE, HOW UNORIGINAL". I BELIEVE THE MARKETING OF THIS FILM WASN'T VERY GOOD. EVERYONE WAS COMPARING IT TO THE CLASSIC 1938 JUDY GARLAND VERSION OF THE WIZARD OF OZ & EXPLAINS SOME OF THE BAD REVIEWS.

WATCHING IT NOW WITH AN OPEN MIND I REALLY ENJOYED THIS LITTLE GEM. THE ACTING IS ALL VERY GOOD, EXCELLENT SPECIAL EFFECTS, HIGH QUALITY CINEMATOGRAPHY, GREAT SOUNDTRACK (ALBUM IS VERY DIFFICULT TO FIND). THE SCREEN PLAY IS VERY CLOSE TO FRANK BAUM'S ORIGINAL STORY BOOK.

SO WHILE IT'S A DRASTIC DEPARTURE FROM SEEING JUDY GARLAND, I REALLY THOUGHT IT WAS FUN TO SEE WHAT HAPPENED TO DOROTHY GALE WHEN SHE LANDED BACK IN KANSAS.

ALSO, THERE'S A LOT OF POSTITIVE MESSAGES IN THIS FILM.
PARENTS SHOULD NOT BE TOO QUICK TO ENTRUST THEIR CHILDREN TO STRANGERS!!!!! HAVING CONFINDENCE IN YOURSELF & BEING TRUE TO YOUR FRIENDS IS VERY IMPORTANT. A WORD OF WARNING TO PARENTS OF SMALL CHILDREN, THIS FILM IS INTENDED MORE FOR THE 1O TO 15 YEAR OLD CROWD & ANY ADULTS WHO LIKE IMAGINATIVE STORIES. SOME OF FRANK BAUMS IDEAS ARE MORE LIKE GRIMS FAIRLY TALES/NIGHTMARES, SO PARENTS OF SMALL CHILDREN, MAKE THEM WAIT UNTIL THEY ARE OLDER TO WATCH THIS ONE.

great movie
One of the best films of all time, Disney's sequel to THE WIZARD OF OZ is a scary, deliciously malevolent story of a huge scale.

Fairuza Balk, in her film debut, plays Dorothy, who is still troubled from her last trip to Oz, losing sleep and driving Aunt Em (Piper Laurie) and Uncle Henry (Matt Clark) to distraction.

A sadistic doctor, Worley (Nicol Williamson), and a ghostly assistant (Jean Marsh), say they will "cure" the girl with a machine. They really are going to use electro-shock therapy on her. At the last minute she is saved by a mysterious girl, falls into a swollen river and wakes up back in Oz. But Oz has mysteriously changed. The Yellow Brick Road has been ripped up, Emerald City has lost its lustre, and all inhabitants have been turned to stone.

Dorothy finds that Oz is now ruled by the evil Nome King (Nicol Williamson) and the head-hunting Princess Mombi (Jean Marsh). Will she survive her return to Oz?

David Shire's music is wonderful, performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. Although RETURN TO OZ is a Disney film, it's not recommended for young children.

A modern classic.

A Great Movie
I grew up on this movie and it still moves me. It has a colorful story line, and has a cheerful spirit. Do not expect hi-tech graphics, since this movie was released in 1985. However, one should enjoy the movie for the sentimental reasons and for an imaginative story.

Heathers
Released in VHS Tape by Anchor Bay Entertainment (28 July, 1994)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Michael Lehmann
Starring: Winona Ryder and Christian Slater
This dark comedy from 1989 was a good showcase for Winona Ryder, playing a high school girl brought into a clique of bitchy classmates (all named Heather), and Christian Slater, doing his early Jack Nicholson thing. While Ryder's character muddles over the consequences of giving up one set of friends for another, her association with a new boy (Slater) in school turns out to have deadly consequences. Director Michael Lehmann turned this unusual film into something more than another teen-death flick. There is real wit and sharp satire afoot, and the very fusion of horror and comedy is provocative in itself. Heathers remains a kind of benchmark in contemporary cinema for bringing surreal intelligence into Hollywood films. --Tom Keogh

classic black comedy
the heathers are the most popular girls in the school along with Veronica who hates the heathers and starts to fall for J.D.(marvelously played by Christian Slater). then one heather dies from liquid drainer and then all hell breaks loose with comedy one liners(like "I love my dead gay son", etc. etc) and some deep black stuff. for Slater, Ryder or Doherty fans.

Very Funny, yet Very Dark Genre film of the 80's
When looking back on some of the films of the late 80's aimed at the countries youths, one of the brightest lights of that era is also one of the genres darkest: "Heathers". This is the story of the most powerful clique at Westerburg High that embraced the generation it was aimed and 14 years later is hailed as cult film that has truly lost none of its razor sharp edge. Veronica Sawyer (Winona Ryder) has outgrown the other members of the "Heathers" clique. The Heathers (Shannen Doherty, Lisanne Falk and Kim Walker) are lusted after by the boys and envied by the girls and they rule their school with a sadistic grip. Veronica's salvation comes in the form of rebellious new kid Jason Dean (Christian Slater) who is even crueler than the Heathers. Their relationship soon has a body count as the nasties of Westerburg suddenly commit "suicide" and Veronica begins to question what she is doing.

"Heathers" is by far, a very dark teen comedy flick. It came to change the whole genre with its pioneering dialogue. There are a wealth of razor blade-sharp speeches as "What's your damage, Heather?",...or "Did you have a brain tumor for breakfast?". It's nothing new today, but "Heathers" was first and is still the best. There are so many persons who makes their best performances here, among others Winona Ryder and Christian Slater. But my personal favorite is Kim Walker, as the megabrat Heather Chandler.

If you've never seen HEATHERS, you are missing one of the best films of the era. It is amazingly still as powerful as it was in 1988 and the performances rank as some of the best of the stars careers.

Hail the Black Comedy! Christian Slater and Winona at best
This is a hysterical film. Winona and Christian are smart, hip, sassy, and cool beyond words in this satire. A commentary on class, cliques, popularity, teenage rites of passage and parental lack of involvement. Excellent film!

Bad Taste
Released in VHS Tape by Anchor Bay Entertainment (20 November, 2001)
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Director: Peter Jackson
Could a title be any more direct? New Zealand maverick Peter Jackson made a splash (well, more of a splatter) with this film debut, a slapstick gross-out comedy about an alien fast-food franchise that turns a small town into a cheap source of meat. All that stands in the extraterrestrials' way is the Alien Investigation Defense Service (yes, it's a tasteless gag), a bunch of would-be Rambos who take on the aliens with axes, rocket launchers, and chainsaws. Jackson mines vomit jokes, dismembered corpses, and brain-spattering gore for over-the-top laughs and succeeds with inventive low-budget effects, crack timing, and sheer exuberance. Not bad for a film made on weekends with homemade props and a bunch of energetic mates. Jackson topped himself a few years later with the even more outrageous and hilarious bloody gut-buster Dead Alive.

The limited-edition two-disc set also includes the documentary featurette "Good Taste Made Bad Taste," a revealing "making of" shot at the time of production and featuring behind-the-scenes footage of Jackson's home-made special effects, and a 16-page booklet with cast interviews. --Sean Axmaker

Average review score:

4.5 stars: Bad taste never tasted so good.
Okay, so the title of my review doesn't make a lot of sense. Anyway, the plot is simple. A small group of goofy government agents are sent to investigate a mass disappearance of the residents in a New Zealand town. The disappearance is linked to a huge extraterrestrial fast food conglomerate which sets up shop in the town. I shouldn't have to tell anyone what they put in the burgers.

This is Peter Jackson's first movie. As many of you know, he went on to direct Lord of the Rings, as well as the equally gory Dead Alive and the more mainstream but still great The Frighteners. However, this film shows how well he was able to work with a far more modest budget. Some of the effects and action sequences are impressive considering the limited resources, especially the chase scene involving agent Derek (played by Jackson) and an alien zombie (also played by Jackson).

You should tell just by looking at the cover, which depicts an alien who looks like a Star Wars cantina reject flipping us the bird, that this is not to be taken seriously. This really is not a horror movie as much as it is a comedy, an extremely gory comedy in which much of the humor revolves around the gore. An example would be the hilarious scene in which Derek falls off a cliff and fractures his skull. He literally has to keep his head together by tying his belt around it.

Even though I can't recommend Bad Taste to all audiences, I truly think people who like Monty Python or South Park may find something to enjoy about it.

Crumb's Crunchy Delights
While Director Peter Jackson may have gained international recognition as the director of LORD OF THE RINGS, many horror fans knew him first from this highly entertaining 1987 splatter comedy. This film is a real testament towards Peter Jackson's talent and love for the genre... the movie was filmed on a shoestring budget on weekends for four years. Reminiscent of other successful horror comedies like RE-ANIMATOR and BASKET CASE, BAD TASTE is a truly eccentric film that has gone on to become a cult hit.

The film has something to do with an alien army that takes over a secluded town in New Zealand. The government has no other choice but to send in "The Boys" to stop those pesky extraterrestrials from turning mankind into the next ingredient on their fast food menu. Led by the evil Lord Crumb, the aliens wage a no-holds barred war against "The Boys" that culminates in an outrageously extended attack on a house that's reminiscent of the climactic showdown in DEAD ALIVE.

BAD TASTE is simply one of the most entertaining horror films that I've ever seen. The action sequences are surprisingly well staged (considering the limited budget) and the graphic violence is presented in such an exaggerated and goofy manner that you can't possibly take it seriously. The film is filled with so many hilariously sick jokes and sight gags that you won't possibly believe that what you're seeing on the screen is actually happening. Peter Jackson handles all the action wonderfully, with a particularly impressive scene filmed on the side of a cliff standing out as the most remarkable (reportedly, this scene was very dangerous to shoot).

While Peter Jackson would top himself a few years later with the release of his over-the-top zombie masterpiece DEAD ALIVE, BAD TASTE first showed genre fans that the New Zealand director could deliver the goods in both the gore and the comedy departments. BAD TASTE is an unforgettable film that comes highly recommended to cult film fanatics. Anchor Bay Entertainment's new release on video and DVD features the quote "From the Director of LORD OF THE RINGS." It's really funny to think how many unsuspecting viewers will sit down to view this bizarre flick on the basis of that quote alone... I envy their ignorance.

Bad taste is awesome!
I was always quite curious about this movie since I heard only good things about it. so I took a chance and bought the limited edition set. Right from the start the movie opens up with excellent blood and gore. A very good move by Peter Jackson, surprisingly the movie gets better and better as more blood and gore come into play. The cheezy atomsphere, low-budget actors, and senseless gore really gives the movie a good sense of humor. Besides the movie, the limited edition dvd is even better. Anchor bay never disappoints you, the transfer is amazing, the sound quality is outstanding as well. The dvd offers surround ex, and 6.1 dts tracks. The movie also comes with the making of Bad taste which also makes the movie well worth your time. For horror fans who love unnecessary gore and low budget actors, deff. buy this without hesistate!

Hellraiser
Released in VHS Tape by Anchor Bay Entertainment (16 July, 1996)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Clive Barker
Starring: Andrew Robinson and Clare Higgins
Having made his reputation as one of the most prolific and gifted horror writers of his generation (prompting Stephen King to call him "the future of horror"), Clive Barker made a natural transition to movies with this audacious directorial debut from 1987. Not only did Barker serve up a chilling tale of devilish originality, he also introduced new icons of horror that since have become as popular among genre connoisseurs as Frankenstein's monster and the Wolfman. Foremost among these frightful visions is the sadomasochistic demon affectionately named Pinhead (so named because his pale, bald head is a geometric pincushion and a symbol of eternal pain). Pinhead is the leader of the Cenobites, agents of evil who appear only when someone successfully "solves" the exotic puzzle box called the Lamont Configuration--a mysterious device that opens the door to Hell. The puzzle's latest victim is Frank (Sean Chapman), who now lives in a gelatinous skeletal state in an upstairs room of the British home just purchased by his newlywed half-brother (Andrew Robinson, best known as the villain from Dirty Harry), who has married one of Frank's former lovers (Claire Higgins). The latter is recruited to supply the cannibalistic Frank with fresh victims, enabling him to reconstitute his own flesh--but will Frank succeed in restoring himself completely? Will Pinhead continue to demonstrate the flesh-ripping pleasures of absolute agony? Your reaction to this description should tell you if you've got the stomach for Barker's film, which has since spawned a number of interesting but inferior sequels. It's definitely not for everyone, but there's no denying that it's become a semiclassic of modern horror. --Jeff Shannon

A Classic piece of horror.

Hellraiser (Widescreen Edition)
Released in VHS Tape by Anchor Bay Entertain (10 July, 2001)
