Metaphorical Directing
the whole movie, i found to be so slow-paced (that's what makes it so deep). it calms you with its thoughtful conversations and metaphorical images. it jolts you when you see an act of violence. stand-out stars: Tony Danza! this movie shows how underrated movie stars are. danza gives an oscar-worthy performance. nick gomez uses the camera to bring meaning and art to the miserable lives of two major drug dealers.

IT'S A MUST SEE MOVIE FOR ANY DAVID LYNCH FAN!

Forever
Had to see it twice. A very surreal dipiction of the "drug dealer life" (like I know anything about it). Well developed characters and plot line. Notice the theme of "forever" and "eternity" throughout the film (appropriately echoed in one of the 50s songs played in the film). Not a typical Hollywood gang-banger flick. Something deeper. Tony Danza popping up is a trip and is cool. But that doesn't overshadow the exceptional acting of other lesser-known talents in the film.

Rapaport is awesome!!
This is an intense movie. You can't take your eyes off Michael Rapaport. It is nice to see a movie in which the actors can actually ACT!

King of the Jungle
Released in VHS Tape by HBO Home Video (11 March, 2003)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Seth Zvi Rosenfeld
Starring: John Leguizamo and Cliff Gorman
Average review score:

Unique characters, fine acting and good story. I liked it.
This 2001 film stars John Leguisamo as Seymour, a mentally challenged young man on the tough streets of New York. He has the mind of a five year old, and yearns to be accepted. His mother, Julie Carmen, a civil rights activist, babies her son and tries to protect him. His divorced father, Cliff Gorman, tries to deny that anything is wrong with his son. Rosie Perez, his mother's lover, tries to help him. And so does a friend, Jeff Rappaport, who tries to teach him to fight and see himself as "king of the jungle."

Seymour's troubled world is shattered when his mother is murdered. That's when everything seems to spin out of control. The story pulled me in and kept me there because I wanted to see how it would all play out. Marisa Tomei plays a small role as a tough detective. And Annabella Sciorra plays the murderer's mother. It's a fine cast and they all do a good job.

I liked the film. It's tight, moves fast, and introduces some unique and interesting characters. And John Leguisamo shines in a difficult role. Recommended.

Spectacular!
I can't think of any other actor who could have played John Leguizamo's character in King of the Jungle; Leguizamo is brilliant yet again. He plays a 25 year old 'retarded' man, Seymour, who lives with his lesbian mother and loves to play basketball. After his mother is murdered, he struggles to find the killer... It's a great story, and I have gained even more respect for Leguizamo... It's great to see him in a small budget made for HBO film. It just proves that he acts for the joy of acting, not money. If you like John Leguizamo or great plots and great acting, this movie is for you. He definately plays the part well; I felt sorry for Seymour.

the jungle - NYC
this movie is great. it conveys the feel of new york city's streets with an excellent 'urban' cast including rosie perez and michael rappaport. john leguizamo has turned out to be an excellent actor as well.

Money for Nothing
Released in VHS Tape by Hollywood Pictures (25 November, 1997)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Ramón Menéndez
Starring: John Cusack and Debi Mazar
Average review score:

Money for Nothing
This film is based on a true story, where a blue-collar working man finds a bag of money that literally fell off an armored truck. The pandemonium and hilarity that follows is beautifully presented by John Cusack, definitely one of the best actors of our time. I've been following Cusack's films from Class in the 1980s through today, and I have not once been disappointed by his performance. He is in top form here, making the viewer wish that they both were and weren't in his shoes. Benicio del Toro is hilarious as a swindler, and Debi Mazar is pretty good as Cusack's on-again, off-again love interest. Gandolfini of HBO's The Sopranos also costars, and is fantastic as usual. If you like any of the actors mentioned, or just want to see a good film about a real event that seems unbelievable, get your hands on this one!

A Hidden Gem
Don't let this film pass you by. Often stashed in the 'comedy' section of the video shelves this film is often more tense drama due to the fact it is based on actual events. In 1981 unemployed laborer Joey Coyle and his pal drive through the back streets of rotting industrial Philadelphia after another unsuccessful day of looking for work. In the middle of the street they find what Coyle thinks might make a good tool box. It in fact has fallen from an armored truck and contains over a million dollars. There is humor, but more anxiety along the way as John Cusak, who portrays Coyle stuggles with what to do next. Michael Madsen gives an excellent performance as a detective from the same neighborhood who urges a reward that will be enough for the impoverished locals to buy a house. Maury Chaykin has a memorable scene as a mob boss trying to swindle Cusak and explains why Ben Franklin is his favorite currency portrait. A heartbreaking and tragic look at 1980's recession America.

John Cusack is great!
I just seen Money For Nothing and I think it was a great movie that kept me entertaining. The true story of Joey Coyle was very interesting because some people who find 1.2 million dollars out of a Armored car are shelfish enough to keep it and do goofy things to try to get away with it . This film was shot in locations I was filmilar with including the Old Airport and near monoghela river in my hometown of Pittsburgh, PA. John Cusack was just great.

Best in the genre
This movie is incredible! Christopher Walken's role is one of his best. Val Kilmer as Elvis - how cool is that! Well written and wonderfully portrayed - it is one of the best movies of the decade!

Zebrahead
Released in VHS Tape by Columbia/Tristar Studios (05 August, 1997)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Anthony Drazan
Starring: Michael Rapaport and DeShonn Castle
A hard-hitting and impressive low-budget independent film about love and racism, Zebrahead is a volatile mix of social commentary and powerful acting. Michael Rapaport (Mighty Aphrodite, Beautiful Girls) is a white urban high school student enamored of black rap culture who pursues and falls in love with the cousin (N'Bushe Wright) of his black best friend. Their intense romance brings out racial tensions in their school, among their friends and at home. Problems escalate as a notorious gang banger goes after the girl, forcing a schoolwide confrontation with violent results. With the flavor of a modern urban Romeo and Juliet love story and a showcase for the debut of two exceptional young actors, Zebrahead is a provocative sleeper film well worth checking out. --Robert Lane
Average review score:

SHADES OF WEST SIDE STORY AND ROMEO AND JULIET...
This is an intriguing independent film, deftly directed by Anthony Drazan, which explores the concepts of interracial romance and reactive racism. Done in the best tradition of independent films, it features some powerhouse performances and a provocative storyline.

The film takes place in Detroit, Michigan, a predominantly black city. Zack (Michael Rappaport) is a white, middle class, jewish, urban teenager whose mother died when he was young. He lives with his father, Richard (Ray Starkey), an erstwhile swinger and owner of an inner city music store. Zack attends the predominantly black, local public high school, and his best friend, Dee (DeShonn Castle), is also black and middle class. Zack is very taken with black culture.

When Dee's cousin, Nikki (N'Bushe Wright), who is black and from East New York, Brooklyn, moves into town, Zack, who has just been dumped by his white girlfriend, finds himself smitten by her. They gradually begin a romance that attracts a lot of unwanted attention. When the high school hot head and bad boy, Nut (Ron Johnson), a black gang banger wanna be, develops the hots for Nikki, it is the beginning of the end with the inevitable violent result.

This is a surprisingly good film with superlative performances by Michael Rappaport, DeShonn Castle, Ron Johnson, N'Bushe Wright, and the late Ray Starkey. The tension throughout the movie is kept taut and believable. Though somewhat predictable, the film manages to keep the viewer engaged throughout. This is a well made film that deserves a viewing.

Excellent!
A beautiful, realistic Romeo and Juliet drama. The acting was wonderful, the writing brilliant. My only compliant is that more people haven't seen this movie, or heard of it. Definitly something I recommend to lovers of urban dramas.

honest and realistic
I love this movie. Really, really love it. I went to a school like this with kids like these.I was in the cafeteria and some other places durring the days racially-charged situations almost went to critical mass, and I was part of a group discussion the following week, in which nothing was resolved.

Which is what I like most about this movie. It doesn't end with everyone singing. Or dancing, or marching towards the camera, or anything like that. The goomba and the Spike Lee guy duke it out while the Asian girl despairs, and the white guy and black girl embrace each other hopelessly. That is life. Some differences will never be resolved, and the best you can hope for is that *some* people will reach each other. I was praying all along that this would not have some pat ending that could never have happened at my school, and I was rewarded. There are no resolutions, just moments.

Paper Soldiers
Released in VHS Tape by Umvd (05 August, 2003)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Directors: Damon Dash and David Daniel
The excellent Paper Soldiers shifts fluidly from comedy to serious drama as it follows an overeager burglar named Shawn (Kevin Hart) through the ups and downs of his short, stressful career. Already on parole but faced with the power being turned off and his child forced to eat nothing but cereal, Shawn convinces an older thief (Derrick "Capone" Lee) to train him. He soon finds himself caught between his angry girlfriend (Tiffany Withers), his incompetent would-be-criminal friends, and a neighborhood sociopath with a hair-trigger temper (Beanie Sigel). Paper Soldiers always feels real, which makes the humor genuine and lets the movie shift gears into high tension. The performances are compelling throughout--Hart makes you care about Shawn without ever letting him off the hook for his foolish decisions. Smartly written and skillfully directed, Paper Soldiers deserves to be seen. Featuring cameos by Jay-Z, Memphis Bleek, and others. --Bret Fetzer

Very Funny!
I just happened to pick up "Paper Soldiers" one day while at the video store, not knowing exactly what to think of it. When I took it home and watched it, I was pleasantly surprised. This film is seriously funny!

The film centers around Shawn, who is on parole and trying to get the almighty dollar fast. The film follows him through his adventures with breaking and entering, yet trying to keep his life on track. It'll have you rolling!

Since the film was directed by Damon Dash, CEO of Roc-A-Fella records, the film is filled with cameos by Jay-Z, Memphis Bleek, and Dash himself. Beanie Siegel also gives a convincing performance as a crazy and extremely violent acquaintance of Shawn's. Angie Martinez, Tiffany Withers (from BET's bet.com), and Stacy Dash also have roles in the film

Don't let the fact that this is a straight-to-video film. It is very funny and I know you'll enjoy it!!!!

LMAOO
yo this movie was so funny.....i recommend it =D

A nice surprise.
I had no interest in seeing this movie, but you know what? It was a cool little flick. The performers (rappers mostly, I think) were mostly very funny. This is not a typical comedy, but the laughs are pretty constant throughout. Check it out. You might like it.

True Romance
Released in VHS Tape by Warner Studios (01 October, 1996)
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Director: Tony Scott
Starring: Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette
It was directed with energetic skill by Top Gun Tony Scott, but this breathtaking 1993 thriller (think of it as an adolescent crime fantasy on steroids) has Quentin Tarantino written all over it. True Romance is really part of a loose trilogy that includes Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, with a crackling Tarantino screenplay that rides a fine line between raucous comedy and violent excess. Christian Slater plays Clarence, the comic-book lover who meets a beguiling prostitute named Alabama (Patricia Arquette), confronts her vicious pimp (Gary Oldman), and embarks on a cross-country odyssey with $5 million worth of Mafia cocaine. Mayhem ensues, culminating in a favorite Tarantino climax--the "Mexican standoff"--in which a roomful of guys are pointing guns at each other, waiting to see who shoots first. Brutal, profane, and totally outrageous, True Romance is not for everyone, but with a supporting cast that includes Dennis Hopper, Christopher Walken, Brad Pitt, and Val Kilmer (as the ghost of Elvis!), you can be sure this movie will never be boring. --Jeff Shannon

Cooler than Cool!
Another masterpiece from screenwriter Quentin Tarrantino ( Reservoir Dogs & Pulp Fiction) direcyed by Tony Scott ( The Last Boy Scout) True Rommance is a high-thrilled rommantic tale with a auwsome cast ever to be put together.

Clarence Worley (Christain Slater) a commic book clerk obsessed with Kung-Fu and John Woo films, meets a call girl Alabama (Patricia Arquete) at a movie theater, they fall in love and get married and confronts her pimp Drexl ( Gary Oldman)kills him and stills a suitecase full of cocain that belongs to the Italian mob lead by ( Christopher Walken) who shares a auwsome sceen with ( Dennis Hooper) who plays clarence's dad.

Clarence and Alabama go on a road trip to Los Angles and are relentlessly being followed by the mafia trying to reclaim their property and the cops who all get caught in the middle of a thousand smoking barrels of bullets.

There's plenty of fammiliar faces of actors in short roles, Samuel L. Jackson as a big time pimp, Bradd Pitt as a big time stoner James Gandolfini (before is stardom on the The Sopranos) as a sadistic hitman who gets into a fight with Alabama.

This has to be one of the most Tarrantino production ever made even thogh It came out a year before Pulp Fiction and a year after Resevoir Dogs.True Romance has more Hype to it and is enjoyable for beginging to end we will never see anything like this anymore.

Rock and Roll with the King
What can you say about a guy who has the King as a Guardian Angel? Either he is as star-crossed as the King was, or he is very lucky. Lots of action and hilarious dialogue. With all the cameos, you may even find your favorite actor in here.

Still as fresh today as it was almost ten years ago
Before Pulp Fiction made him a household name, Quentin Tarantino wrote this ultra violent crime fantasy which was directed by Tony Scott. Here we meet Clarence (Christian Slater) and Alabama (Patricia Arquette); two star crossed lovers who embark on a cross country road trip with a very large amount of stolen mafia cocaine. What results is the two running and gunning their way culminating in a Mexican standoff with cops, crooks, and the mob. Did I mention that Clarence also talks to the ghost of Elvis (Val Kilmer) whenever he goes to the bathroom? Tarantino's penchant for witty, pulpy dialog seems a bit underused here in comparison with his other projects (Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown), but Scott's frantic bloody direction makes True Romance stand on it's own. The rest of the great cast includes Dennis Hopper, Gary Oldman, Brad Pitt, Christopher Walken, Michael Rapaport, Bronson Pinchot (who steals many a scene), Samuel L. Jackson, James Gandolfini, Chris Penn, and Tom Sizemore in supporting roles; most of which give memorable performances. Warner Bros. really put together a great DVD package here, and while the other special features are standard, the commentaries by Scott, Slater and Arquette, and especially Tarantino, are worth owning the film for alone.
