The Secret Lives of Dentists
Released in Theatrical Release by ()
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Alan Rudolph
Starring: Campbell Scott, Denis Leary, and Hope Davis
Average review score:

Walter Mitty-Like Suburban Dentist Has the Blues
This is one of the more satisfying
films I've seen this year. Its of
the serious comedy genre. Dentists
will be interested but its not particularly
about dentists.
Its about the difficulty of maintaining
intimacy in modern marriage and what that
lack can lead to. Its a re
make of the Thurber/Danny Kaye Secret
Life of Walter Mitty.

Campbell Scott and wife Hope Davis
work as partner dentists in suburban New York.
The couple have been married ten years, they
have three daughters. Scott is more sympatico
and caring of the girls than
his wife, and they both know it.

A cynical trumpet player patient, Dennis Leary,
criticizes Scott's dental work and browbeats him
publicly into re-fixing his free, though Leary wrecked
the dental work by not following advice.

The Spirit of Leary hangs about the House
giving Scott advice on how to deal with his
problems. The children are a constant battle. The
absences of the wife spur suspicion and fearful
fantasy. .

Scott begins to fantasize that his wife is secretly
cuckolding him, and he imagines fantasies of what a
a new romantic life of his own would be like.

The Couple are chained to their Practice, but even
more chained to the troublesome and irksome children.
There is a five day bout with the flu that puts both
dentists to bed but still waiting on their vomiting
children hand and foot, Scott doing most of the work.

The film raises questions about
the tacit but never discussed secrets, shared but never
spoken of, between modern marrieds.

Scott, son of actor George C. Scott, is in
the best role of his life. This is
also certainly the best film Robert Altman
disciple Alan Rudolph has ever made. Dennis
Leary is pretty good as the low-life musician with
a pair of Elvis-on-tour aviators, a bad brown
leather jacket, bad hair and other sartorial woes.
He is a cross between the Bogey character in Play
it Again Sam and the Sheldon Leonard character,
Grogan, who used to show up in the foodstore
to criticize and torment poor Jack Benny.

The film is a little like American Beauty but more
realistic and less the joke you can't take seriously.
Its good. I had hoped for a better ending. In fact
I could have written one I like better but this one will do.
Despite the ending, and a slight lengthiness, I would
recommend it highly.

...

American Beauty but realistic
A tough look at a tough marriage. Amercian Beauty covered similar ground but was played for laughs. There are laughs in Dentists to be sure. But, most of those come in fantasy sequences. The day to day stuff is In the Bedroom quality.

...

Stunning, Authentic
This film is a GREAT MOVIE... Brilliant, honest, authentic... A snap shot of what family life truly is, what being married is, how it feels, how the people feel, how it falls apart... Worth watching...!

Not set in Montana
Beware: this is set basically entirely in New York, because that's where MOBSTERS hang.

If you're looking for the Z-Grade "Clay Pigeons" "Montana's" title and genre suggest, try "Route 9" instead. This film's been tagged with the dreaded "failed Tarnatino clone" label, and with good reason.

It's beautifull.
I liked the layed back feel it has.
What I remember most about the movie is the couple and their relationship. I like them because they are witty and strong, and they love each other in a sweet, loyal way that is the total opposite of the sacharine, phony romances I keep seeing in Hollywood films. They are grown-ups and they look like real people and they're charismatic individuals. That's a very needed break from all the bratty, spoiled silly, no-brain teenage movies the movie industry tries (to no avail) to force down my throat.
If it were a samurai movie or something, placed in such an alien and exotic place that your moral code somehow doesn't aply anymore, I wouldn't wonder "Why am I rooting and feeling for a couple or payed assassins?" But although it is placed in our world and our time it's like it's another dimension where it's ok for criminals to be talking to you about morals. They make me want to believe, which just might be the best compliment one can pay to a movie.
I would definitely buy it. And the boss is the giant in Harry Potter.

¿Nothing Personal¿
'Nothing Personal', as this movie was originally and more aptly titled, is a low-key, darkly funny and engaging depiction of a dysfunctional 'family' of professional assassins in the throes of an internal power struggle. Claire (Kyra Sedgwick) and Nick (Stanley Tucci), a killer team with a romantic past, are sent to retrieve a wayward money-runner who has sold-out their boss (Robbie Coltrane). Thrust into the middle of a plot involving shifting alliances, challenged loyalties and crooked self-actualization theory, the attentive veiwer will be rewarded with many small moments that add up to a movie more substantial than it appears at first blush.

Strong points: The Hoebers' taut script; Director Leitzes' willingness to allow us to deduce much of the movie's background story w/out condescending paint-by-numbers scenes or lame expository dialogue; an effective cast featuring Sedgwick and Tucci's gently expressed adult partnership facing an inexorable fate; Philip Seymour Hoffman's unctuously ambitious provocateur; John Ritter's brief but effectively weighty performance; and perhaps most impressive, Robin Tunney's momentum building depiction of the consistently underestimated 'Kitty'.

Weak points: Coltrane's 'Boss' seems a bit scattered and inexplicably motivated; a few loose ends in the plot; a vaguely un-anchored setting devoid of police, witnesses or collateral damage.

$8.50 moments: Response of two assassins to being ordered to kill Nick; Claire's turn-about at the tree (and the little boy who drops in); Nick's impression of Elmer Fudd.

This movie's outlook and humor is reminiscent of some of the lack of "honor among thieves" and violence-based humor seen recently in 'Out of Sight' and 'Grosse Pointe Blank' (admittedly better movies). So, if you enjoyed those 'adult' comedies, I'd wager you won't regret spending ninety-odd minutes with 'Montana'.

"$8.50 moment": the point in a movie when you feel you definitely got your money's worth (value determined by the current average cost of a movie ticket in NYC).

Julian Po
Released in VHS Tape by New Line Studios (14 July, 1998)
MPAA Rating: PG-13 (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Alan Wade (II)
Based on a Serbo-Croation story, this film by Alan Wade is set in rural Appalachia and stars Christian Slater as a suicidal stranger whose car breaks down on a long pilgrimage to the ocean. The locals greet him with suspicion, but when they find out that he has death on his mind, he becomes a local celebrity, treated with kindness and made a confidante of many who have troubles to share. The irony is that this rise in esteem is exactly the antidote to his self-destructive urges--but will these good people understand if he changes his mind? Wade's low-key approach is a good choice for this character-driven story, but his portrayal of rural types is a bit tainted by the clichés of TV's Northern Exposure and Doc Hollywood, stories where small-town folk are automatically eccentric. Still, this is a pleasant enough film about a highly unusual subject. --Tom Keogh
Average review score:

THE BEST DARK COMEDY IN YEARS!
I am a huge fan of Christian Slater because he chooses his roles carefully, and most of his roles are dark comedies, which is of course my sense of humor. Such greats as Heathers, Very Bad Things, Twisted, Pump Up the Volume.... all of those were some of his best, but this one tops em all. The whole movie is so fun to watch, knowing that he has death on his mind, and the townspeople just watch him day and night to see if he actually goes through with suicide. One particular scene is where some kids are staring at him through his window and he looks out and screams, "It's ok! I'm not going to kill myself today, you can all go home now!" Robin Tunney was a great supporting actress. Along with a wonderful soundtrack, I highly recommend this movie to the lovers of dark comedies, and only the hardcore fans of Christian Slater.

Interesting, offbeat, humorous, Euopean-like film.
I only purchase the video of a movie when it is one I know I'll want to see again and again. Such was the case with "Julian Po." My small video collection consists mostly of films by Ingmar Bergman and other European directors. "Julian Po," except that it is in English with no subtitles and was made by Americans, fits right in. The story -- which I'm not going to divulge because I don't want to lessen the impact of the film on you -- was adapted from a short story by a Czech writer. Though it deals with suicide, it is a film with a great deal of humor, an off-beat movie which holds your attention from beginning to end.

Julian Po is played by Christian Slater, who is so good he doesn't appear to be acting at all. The supporting cast is excellent, too. Even the music score is enchanting and very European. It is designed to fit the action perfectly. For example, when Po is followed down the street of a small town by five or six children, the music seems to be played by five or six wind instruments. But as more and more people begin to follow Po, more and more instruments are added to the orchestration until you have a crowd following him to the same theme played with a lush orchestral sound. This is just one of many details that makes this film work so well.

On the downside there are one or two mistakes of continuity (Po leaves a letter on the bed in his hotel room but in the next scene he has it with him on a bridge where he tears it up; Po has to pay in advance for the first night at the hotel, but not when he returns to extend his stay). And the ending is less than satisfying to those who want a clearer resolution. Nevertheless, I wish more Americans made movies like this one. Hollywood it isn't, and that's perhaps the biggest compliment I can give to "Julian Po."

A wonderfully different movie!
I think this movie is a masterpiece. I love the irony and its philosophy of life...life is short...live it to the fullest before it's too late! And I love the juxtaposition of that with the sense of the futility of life, plus the juxtaposition of Julian's earlier anonymous life where no one cared or loved him with the ironic love and caring he finds in this small town where he's come to kill himself. Then there's the finally irony of finding himself right before...well, I don't want to spoil the plot for you. See for yourself.

Watching it takes me through a range of emotions from laughter to tears to great introspection into the meaninig of life. I couldn't ask for more in a movie. And I thought Christian Slater played the part perfectly.

A great, off-beat movie that's a real hidden gem. Not as depressing as it might sound.

End of Days
Released in VHS Tape by Universal Studios (18 April, 2000)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Peter Hyams
Starring: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Gabriel Byrne, and Robin Tunney
After a two-year hiatus that included recovery from heart surgery, Arnold Schwarzenegger returned to the big screen in November 1999 with End of Days, a Thanksgiving turkey if ever there was one. Overcooked and bloated with stuffing, this ludicrous thriller attached itself to the end-of-the-millennium furor that kicked in a year too early. A prologue begins in 1979 with panic in the Vatican when a comet signals the birth of a child who will, 20 years later, become the chosen bride of Satan, destined to conceive the devil's spawn between 11 p.m. and midnight on December 31, 1999. It's hard to decide who has the more thankless role--Robin Tunney as Satan's would-be bride, or Schwarzenegger as Jericho Cane, the burned-out alcoholic bodyguard assigned to protect the girl from Satan, billed as "The Man" and played with cheesy menace (and an inconsistent variety of metaphysical manifestations) by Gabriel Byrne.

With kitschy character names like Jericho and Chicago (Arnie's partner, played by Kevin Pollack) and lapses in logic that any 5-year-old could spot, End of Days is a loud, aggravating movie that would be entertaining if it were intended as comedy. But Schwarzenegger and director Peter Hyams approach the story as an earnest tale of redemption and tested faith, delivering a ridiculous climax full of special effects and devoid of dramatic impact. You're left instead to savor the verbal and physical sparring between Satan and Jericho, resulting in the most thorough pummeling Schwarzenegger's ever endured onscreen. Of course he eventually gets his payback, just in time for New Year's Eve. Perhaps he was touched by an angel. --Jeff Shannon

Forget The Critics!
When I first bought End Of Days,I thought it was going to be bad, giving that movie critics panned it when it was out in thearters.Boy,I was surprised! It's a creepy, dark Arnold action/horror flick that got great,if not exactly mind-blowing,special effects and heart-pounding scariness to go with it.Sure the plot is silly(Arnold vs.the Devil),the acting isn't great, but hey-it's prime Ar-nuld!Also,give the guy credit for trying to be somebody more human(a down-and-out cop named Jericho) than his usaul larger-than-life,man-of steel action hero self!Even when Arnie gets a little ridiculous when he trys to cry or asks for God to "give me strength"(!).Gabriel Byrne does a fine, menacing turn as you-know-who,while Robin Tunney does a histronic, overwrought turn as Satan's would-be bride Christine York! All n' all,a fun roller-coaster ride of a DVD!

the govenor vs. the devil
now the govenor of New York, Arnold, fights the devil in order to stop the end of days. who will win, well they both die, the govenor throws himself onto a sword and sends the devil(who took Gabriel Brynes body and played around with it) pack to the pits of hell. a good match but the govenor made the most punch. some suckerpunches along the way as well.

A Very Godly Movie
I don't know why the ratings were so low? Can they atleast focus on the message this movie is trying to explain. The writer wanted show about, that Satin uses tainted truths and preys on our weaknesses to destroy man from inside out! This movie is not mean't too be a violent money making, well digitaly comprised with lots of explostion effects. But i'm really glad that the movie was well acted & action packed & lots of blood witch help to bring the seriousness & spiritual depth too the movie!

"Note to buyers" If your a true christian you would be moved by this movie.
"You your an Atheists. Forget it. You would hate this movie!"
