"Jumanji: Collector Edition" is a vast improvement over the bare-bones original. The picture quality is impressive and detail and the sound is clear and engaging. Columbia/Tri-Star has really kicked in for special features in this new edition. Though it lacks the multiple audio aspects of the original, this new edition contains behind-the-scene and FX featurettes, trailers, cast bios and animated menus. Overall, this DVD earns a "B+".

I first saw this movie at the movie theatres when I was 7. Now I am 14 and I still like this movie. It is about a board game, when you play it real things from the jungle come to life from the game. Four characters must finish the game to make everything from the game go away. I am very impressed with the way the animals and the effects looked. The actors did an excellent job especially Bonnie Hunt and Robin Williams. The movie went by smoothly. I enjoyed the movie a lot. The movie may be a little dark because my little sister was scared the first time she saw it. Everytime she watches it more she gets less scared. I don't know why. I recommend this movie to anybody!

When Alan Parrish finds an old board game in a construction site, he has no clue what awaits him. When he and friend Sarah Whittle start to play, he is pulled into the game and she is chased from the house by bats. Fast-forward 26 years to when brother and sister Peter and Judy Shepherd start to play. They free a now grown Alan from the game, but in the process release monkeys, mosquitoes, and a lion. They realize they must finish the game to make everything return to normal. Reuniting with the adult Sarah, they attempt to stay alive long enough to do just that.

This movie is a fantastic fantasy/action movie. It starts out well, and the suspense continues to build until the climax. At the same time, it's got some great one-liners and funny scenes to break the tension. The entire cast does well with the material, including all the special effects. The special effects show their age today and are a bit more stylized then realistic, but they serve the movie well.

A word of warning to parents. This is a very intense movie. Even though it was marketed as a family movie, many small kids will be frightened by it. Keeping that in mind, you might want to preview it before you show it to them.

This DVD is a perfect showcase for the movie. The picture is sharp, and the surround sound puts you right in the middle of the action. There is a commentary and two documentaries from the special effects team that give you insight into how they brought the animals in the film to life. Columbia/Tri-Star has really kicked in for special features in this new edition. Though it lacks the multiple audio aspects of the original, this new edition contains behind-the-scene and FX featurettes, trailers, cast bios and animated menus. Overall, this DVD earns a "B+".

Would u like a board game like this?
I first saw this movie at the movie theatres when I was 7. Now I am 14 and I still like this movie. It is about a board game, when you play it real things from the jungle come to life from the game. Four characters must finish the game to make everything from the game go away. I am very impressed with the way the animals and the effects looked. The actors did an excellent job especially Bonnie Hunt and Robin Williams. The movie went by smoothly. I enjoyed the movie a lot. The movie may be a little dark because my little sister was scared the first time she saw it. Everytime she watches it more she gets less scared. I don't know why. I recommend this movie to anybody!

The Perfect Adventure Film for Older Kids and Adults
When Alan Parrish finds an old board game in a construction site, he has no clue what awaits him. When he and friend Sarah Whittle start to play, he is pulled into the game and she is chased from the house by bats. Fast-forward 26 years to when brother and sister Peter and Judy Shepherd start to play. They free a now grown Alan from the game, but in the process release monkeys, mosquitoes, and a lion. They realize they must finish the game to make everything return to normal. Reuniting with the adult Sarah, they attempt to stay alive long enough to do just that.

This movie is a fantastic fantasy/action movie. It starts out well, and the suspense continues to build until the climax. At the same time, it's got some great one-liners and funny scenes to break the tension. The entire cast does well with the material, including all the special effects. The special effects show their age today and are a bit more stylized then realistic, but they serve the movie well.

A word of warning to parents. This is a very intense movie. Even though it was marketed as a family movie, many small kids will be frightened by it. Keeping that in mind, you might want to preview it before you show it to them.

This DVD is a perfect showcase for the movie. The picture is sharp, and the surround sound puts you right in the middle of the action. There is a commentary and two documentaries from the special effects team that give you insight into how they brought the animals in the film to life. If you're looking to purchase this film, this is the version to get.

Jumanji is an action movie that gets it right. It has the perfect mix of character and story supported by special effects. Pick it up today and be prepared to leave your world behind.

This film represents Hugh Grant's first big bid at Hollywood stardom, on the heels of the success of Four Weddings and a Funeral. But he stumbled twice: first with this mundane comedy, then by being arrested after soliciting a prostitute near downtown Hollywood, the week before the film opened. Directed by Chris Columbus (Mrs. Doubtfire), Nine Months was a weak reworking of a French film about an aging bachelor (Grant) who can't decide whether to commit to the woman he loves (Julianne Moore). When she becomes pregnant, he still can't make up his mind and winds up blowing hot and cold on the subject of fatherhood, which causes tension in the relationship. There's a lot of low comedy involving Grant's best friend; Tom Arnold plays this ultra-married and child-ridden suburbanite, who makes fatherhood look like a living hell. Robin Williams has a funny cameo as a foreign doctor, but in the end, the sentiment is ladled on and Grant doesn't have nearly enough funny material to work with. --Marshall Fine

Hugh's Bumbling Englishman Bit Still Ain't Wearing Thin.
Hugh Grant could Churn out Romantic Comedy after Romantic Comedy after Romantic Comedy, playing the Same Bumbling, Stammering Englishman in every one, and I'd still be laughing. I'll be laughing at "Mickey Blue Eyes 2", I'll be laughing at "Notting Hill 4". I will never tire of Hugh's brand of Comedy.

In "Nine Months" Hugh plays a Likeable Brit who is in a Great Relationship (with the Exceptional Julianne Moore) that he doesn't want to change. He is Completely Content until she utters the Immortal Words... "I'm Pregnant".

Hugh's world comes Crashing down faster than you can say Four Weddings and a Funeral. It's bad for him, but it's Great for us, as we watch Hugh deal with the prospects and trials of Fatherhood.

Hugh and Julianne are Wonderfully supported by the Terrific Supporting cast. Tom Arnold and Joan Cusack are Hysterical as fellow soon-to-be Parents (though they already have a pile of kids who make matters worse for Hugh). Jeff Goldblum is Good, but isn't given much screen time to Deliver many Memorable lines, or Develop into a Memorable Character. Robin Williams gives an Utterly Hilarious Cameo as a Foriegn doctor who has to deliver the baby.

Chris Columbus knows the Territory and he Mines the area for all Available Laughs. The One Week Link, and reason for the 4 stars instead of 5, is Goldblum. His role is Under-written, Under-performed, and left Somewhat Pointless.

Oh Baby!!
This review refers to the DVD edition(20th Cent Fox) of "Nine Months"......

Looking for a goodtime but don't want to leave your couch. Here's the answer for you.."Nine Months". Directed by Chris Columbus(Harry Potter/Home Alone) starring Hugh Grant, Julianne Moore,Robin Williams, Tom Arnold, Joan Cusak and Jeff Goldblum. These are names that really know how to entertain and will have you laughing out loud the entire length of the film."Nine Months" is a hysterical look at the fears, joys and anticipation of becoming a parent and the waiting period that goes along with it.

Samuel and Rebecca have a relationship to be envied. Samuel is a successful child psychiatrist, the beautiful Rebecca is a graceful dance instructor,they have a cool apartment and car and five years of UNwedded bliss...don't fix it if it ain't broken...right? Well they are in for a big change in their lives. When Rebecca utters those wonderful words..."Samuel...I'm pregnant", the very cool and level headed Samuel practically kills them when he runs the car off the road. And so the fun begins. He discovers he has some growing up to do and it's easier said then done.

Included in the fun are their new "friends", Marty and Gail Dwyer a very pushy but well meaning couple played by Tom Arnold and Joan Cusak. They are old pros at the pregnancy game, as they are working on their fourth. Arnold's one liners are non stop and delivered with his usual brand of boisterious humor, and you never knew how funny delivering a baby could be until you have seen Cusak's brillantly comical turn in the labor room. Jeff Goldblum, is Samuel's single friend, his link to his youth,and turns in a great performance.Then, of course there's the obstetrician. Who else can make having a baby such a riotious romp other than Robin Williams. He's just absolutely zany as the Russian Dr. Kosevitch, about to atttempt his first delivery, human delivery that is!

So prepare to laugh out loud as Samuel and Marty go fist to cuffs with "Arnie the Dinosaur",Dr. Kosevich butchers the English language, it's Murphy's Law on the way to the hospital, and Rebecca and Gail make impending motherhood a delight for all.

You can't go wrong with the film or with the DVD. It's a beautiful picture in anamorphic widescreen(Aspect Ratio 2.35:1), and the audio in Dolby Dig 5.1(or Surround) is outstanding. The soundtrack including "The Time of Your Life"(Steve Van Zandt) and scoring by Hans Zimmer is perfect for this film. There are subtitles in English and Spanish and may be viewed in French. There are trailers but no other special features included. It's a quality transfer with at an exceptionally good price.

It's it's a great ride, and one you will want to go on again...have fun...Laurie

Fantastic movie
Outstanding movie, great for the family. Hugh Grant plays a self conceited man whos getting older and has to decide on whether he wants to make a comitment and be a father. He is in love with his girlfriend (Julianne Moore) and his like is near perfect until she announces her pregnancy. He has to decide whether he wants to be a father and give up his old life and is frightned. His friend (Tom Arnold) plays a father with 3 girls and a pregnant wife and this terrifies him. A great comdey and cute story in general, a nice film.

Jakob the Liar

Roberto Benigni's Life Is Beautiful aside, milking the Holocaust for laughs is a dangerous game. Even the blackest, most therapeutic humor turns queasy in the shadow of such monstrous evil; it's like dancing on a mass grave. So Jakob the Liar's got a hard road to hoe--its eponymous schlemiel plays out his semi-farcical adventures in the mean streets of the Warsaw Ghetto circa 1944. The skies are always leaden over Jakob's hometown, reflecting the comic climate that pervades this mostly unfortunate adaptation of Jurek Becker's autobiographical book (first filmed in 1975).

Jakob Heym (Robin Williams in overbearingly earnest mode) gets tangled in a string of self-perpetuating lies about a hidden radio, supposedly broadcasting news that the victorious Red Army is nearing. His desperate attempts to convince a clutch of insistently idiosyncratic friends (clichés to a man: Liev Schreiber, Bob Balaban, Michael Jeter, Alan Arkin) and obligatory Nazi bad guys that the radio doesn't exist are complicated by the fact that he's stashed a fugitive kid (a dead ringer--sorry!--for Anne Frank) in his attic--and by abundant evidence that lies are the best medicine for the ghetto's skyrocketing suicide rate. Copious unfunny misunderstandings and pratfalls eventuate in this Holocaust rendition of Fiddler on the Roof (you expect Williams to break into song: "If I were a funny man...."). Ultimately, Jakob the Liar loses its way for good in some very ugly violence and a rather nasty final twist: the film's ending might just be rubbing our noses in another feel-good lie. --Kathleen Murphy

ONE OF THE BETTER MOVIES TO INTRODUCE KIDS TO HOLOCAUST
I have not read the book but I greatly enjoyed the movie. Good narrative, excellent cinematography, and some stunning background music. While the film may be held guilty for some cardboard characters (e.g., all Germans are mean looking men), Robin Williams was surely under-appreciated in his very concvincing cameo as Jakob, a pancake vendor, who pretends to have a radio and distribute good news to other Jews in the ghetto -- and I don't mean just the accent. The guy is brilliant.

The theme is a cross between "Goodmorning Vietnam" meets "Life is beautiful" -- classic cultural interpretations of the forced lifestyle of the characters promote the effect of a rumour that a working radio exists in the barbed-wire ghetto, allowing a lowly pancake-vendor to raise to heroic proportions amidst his small group of associates and lie in the face of hope-dashing truth.

At its heart, the story is about the irrefutable spirit of human life despite seemingly unsurmountable odds as Jakob deals with the consequences of either perpetuating his lie or coming out with the whole truth, weighing hope against despair. Swept up in his own joking accident and a few well-timed coincidences, endorsed by the ghetto residents, the ghetto organizes to resist their Nazi oppressors.

As the fall of the Third Reich becomes more and more likely, the tangle of truth and falsity tightens around Jakob and each lie becomes more and more needed.

An interesting angle to look at the Holocaust, it serves as one of the better movies to introduce younger audiences to that odious period of human history. Oh, and did I mention that the background score is marvellous?

A emotional tearjerker that will make you think
I just bought this movie last night at Wal-mart and watched it. I am so glad I did. There are some people who are giving it bad reviews. I think it deserves only good ones. Robin Williams is excellent and plays the title role perfectly. It is the story about a man in the ghetto who begins to pretend he has a radio in order to give other jews hope. While telling his lies he is secretly hiding a little jewish girl in his attic in order to keep her from going to a camp. I wont give away the ending but I will say the ending is very powerful and will move you to tears. This movie can be brilliantly funny, and then turn bitterly tragic, and evn after that come through as an amazingly powerfull testiment to the human spirit and the humen heart. Watch this movie. You wont regret it.

When mass hysteria counts for something
JAKOB THE LIAR lets you know when mass hysteria counts for something. See this movie, but not for historical content. See it to feel the power of hope. As you watch, don't sob, don't wish that prayer had done a better job. Hang in there tight for the first fifteen minutes of the film while the director builds the character of Jakob Heym, menteur. Then, watch while Jakob ostensibly tunes into a radio full of ridiculous war news which he passes on mendaciously as the truth. I doubt that any actor except Robin Williams could have pulled this off. It has a remarkable scene with Williams telling the Ghetto denizens about the army tanks that have just came off the boat from Chicago. It has a more remarkable scene of Williams tuning in the radio for a orphan waif who actually believes that her remarks are heard by Churchill. The humor is on the cynical side. The comedy is on the hope side. Want to listen to honest dialogue? See this movie.

Wax up your boards and hang 10 (or whatever) where the big waves come crashing in: off the English coast at Cornwall. Huh? No endless summer? No two girls for every boy? No, but in Blue Juice one can see what most of us probably never even thought about: the British Isles are indeed islands and, not incongruously, there's a considerable surfing culture with a handful of homegrown legends. One of the latter is JC (Sean Pertwee), a skilled surfer so driven by the challenge and so dedicated to his mates that it threatens his meandering romance with the long-suffering Chloe (Catherine Zeta-Jones). The two have planned an extensive, around-the-world trip as a kind of prelude to discussing marriage, but the arrangement is threatened when three of JC's old childhood chums arrive from London. One of them (played by Steven Mackintosh) is a famous record producer who has sold his soul (in every sense) to reap profits from fashionable electronica. Another (Ewan McGregor) is a chronic screwup resorting to hustling junk to unsuspecting customers. The last (Peter Gunn) is an anxious sort terrified of marrying his longtime girlfriend. Together, these four guys look like a pack of nowhere men and they know it: while the story largely focuses on JC and Chloe, there's plenty of material for the supporting characters to indulge in mucho self-loathing. The film never quite jumps off the screen and the script may be hampered by too many layers of character eccentricity, but this is still an enjoyable piece with some fine comic performances. --Tom Keogh

A very funny, typically British film about Surfing in Cornwall.
Great to watch with friends, picking up qotes/lines such as...

A must see for any British Film fan...
There is Sean Pertwee and Ewan McGreggor for the girls, and the sight of Catherine Zeta Jones in her underwear I am pretty sure will attract a male audience too.

GREAT FILM - shame about the unrealistic ending!!

Good no-brainer
This is a great cute movie if you don't want to have to think too hard. Some classic funny lines, really goofy characters.

JC (Sean Pertwee) must prove his worth as a surfer (in England!) where surfing barely exists. Kind of a cute twist on the surfer movies: it's cold and there's really no waves to speak of. But once in a blue moon, these huge waves come in and that is when JC must prove himself.

BUT... his girlfriend (Cahterine Zeta-Jones) will disown him if he even tries! So, here lies the issue. Does he pronounce his love and forget the stupid wave, or is he influenced by his childhood friends who care nothing for intimate relationships?

Unrealistic, sure. Of course. But cute.

Plot is thin, but the characters are memorable and there are some truly classic funny lines. JC's childhood friends (Ewan McGregor, Peter Gunn and Steven Mackintosh) are hilarious characters and are all portrayed very well. Definitely worth the rental price, or buy it used.

A couple things I don't understand:

WHY ON EARTH IS THE PRICE SO HIGH!?!?! What's up with that? But it used.

WHY is Ewan McGregor on the front cover, as if he is the main character? Yes, he plays a pivotal character - JC actually forsakes his love to save Dean's pride and his life. But shouldn't Sean Pertwee be the one on the cover with Catherine Zeta-Jones? As cute as McGregor is, he never looks this clean-cut (or sane) in the movie!

I always made fun of the surfer dudes before seeing Ewan in this movie. I loved the acid trip scene where Ewan gets embarrassed over his friend's behavior although he gave him the acid. Check out the braided hair on Ewan as well and they had a cool song and sock/p*nis scene as well.
