Turk 182
Released in VHS Tape by Twentieth Century Fox (07 November, 1988)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Hutton, Culp, and Timothy Hutton
Average review score:

It's a great little film
If you're a fan of Tim Hutton.. then you already have this in your collection.. This is a great little film, with a predictable storyline, but the characters draw you in, simply because of the talented actors that bring this this quirky little tale of brotherly love to life... and its worth the price simply for Kim Catrall

Great Memories.
This movie is the most memorable movie in my existance. In 1985 this played on HBO shortly after its release and it has a special meaning in my life. I was 17 at the time. My girlfriend Debbie and I had a joke that everytime we turned on the TV, "Turk 182" would be on... and it was! It's a great movie, with the same passion of "Taps". Rent or buy it!

-Charlie

just for the name
think about it, maybe blink 182 got their name from this movie. If it was called turk 185, they might of called the band blink 185. Certainly not the same. God bless this movie for getting made. Im deffintly looking forward to viewing it in the future.

The Temp
Released in VHS Tape by Paramount Studio (29 August, 2000)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Tom Holland
Starring: Timothy Hutton and Lara Flynn Boyle
Enjoyably trashy fun. The Temp stars Timothy Hutton as an executive with a history of paranoia and jealousy. When his company is taken over by a large corporation, everyone scrambles and jockeys for position--but Hutton finds himself rising to the top with the assistance of his temporary secretary (Lara Flynn Boyle, wearing a series of escalating hairdos and short skirts). As rivals and foes start turning up dead, Hutton struggles to figure out if his madness is returning, or is his curvaceous secretary taking her job a little too seriously? The Temp isn't as gloriously over-the-top as one might wish, but it is a ridiculous yet completely watchable potboiler with lots of daffy dialogue and cheesy performances; the cast includes Faye Dunaway, Oliver Platt, and Maura Tierney. --Bret Fetzer

Needs a rewrite with more Dunaway
This is yet another vehicle starring Faye Dunaway that did not fully utilize her incredible talent. Who needs Lara Flynn Boyle when you have Faye Dunaway? Miss Dunaway was not in enough scenes, though she's looking good. They should have ditched the Flynn Boyle character and had Timothy Hutton fall in love with Dunaway. People start to die mysteriously, and he's not sure if it's Dunaway. She could do a couple of scenes where she acts nuts and you're not sure if she's guilty. In the end, it turns out to be jealous women in her office trying to frame her to get Timothy Hutton to ask them out. Dunaway and Hutton run off together in the end. That is is a much better story and would have showcased Dunaway much better. Otherwise, the action was good.

... it's a bargain
well the casting is good. boyle looks great. hutton does his EMOTIONALLY SCARRED role good (again). and faye dunaway to boot? trying to kill and screw her way to the top, temp harrington excels as a natural born liar who is able to respond effectively to any confrontation. I really liked that element of realism. We've all met people like that. There are some clever killings, and a memorable dismemberment. such of a happy ending as hutton's character finds confidence and authority in his capture of a crook. slick and glossy. sexy in a sick way.

Excellent!
I loved this movie! Lara Flynn Boyle seems like a dream come true as a temp for her boss, Timothy Hutton. She's so anxious to please and is extremely efficient. As time goes on, though, Lara's character begins to lose her shine. She's caught in lies about her educational background and so-called family. After a while, co-workers start turning up dead. Lara's character is somewhat humorous, despite her evil side. Faye Dunaway was also great.

slooww
I'm madly in love with Nasstasja Kinsi, I think Tim Hutton is a great actor, and I think Turgenev (who wrote the original novel) one of the greatest writers ever. But this was a slow, slow movie, that I ended up fast-forwarding through.

Beautiful Classic.Hutton is awesome in his character
I watched this film back in the early 1990's and i must
say that i really liked the film. The movie is about a man,
i believe a russian who is played by hutton and he falls in
love with an italian woman, but hutton decides to have an affair
with a blonde woman which costs him his true love with the italian woman. This is a slow moving picture, and it is long,
but i recommend it because life is not like the movies.
Things go slow, and the ending is quite interesting...
Sometimes love is hard to find, and when it is found sometimes
for the wrong reasons people just let it slip away with sloppy
incidents that really are to negative. Hutton is fantastic
in this motion picture. i believe the author who wrote this
book is russian, great job! I recommend one buying"torrents of spring."

The General's Daughter
Released in VHS Tape by Paramount Studio (27 August, 2002)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Simon West
Starring: John Travolta and Madeleine Stowe
When John Travolta first opens his mouth during the opening credits of The General's Daughter and speaks in a terrible Southern cracker drawl, one briefly hopes that the movie will turn out to be just as hilariously bad. Unfortunately, the accent is soon revealed to be part of a disguise, and the movie is just as quickly unveiled as a clumsy, run-of-the-mill potboiler. A female officer is discovered strangled and tied to the ground; she's the title character, and because of the general's political ambitions, the mystery of who did it and why has to be wrapped up in 36 hours by Travolta and fellow CID officer Madeleine Stowe (Last of the Mohicans, 12 Monkeys). Sexual violence and lurid S&M have been thrown in to shore up the incomprehensible plot, but that only adds to the queasy atmosphere. The supporting actors--an impressive collection including James Woods (Salvador), Timothy Hutton (Ordinary People), and James Cromwell (Babe, L.A. Confidential)--don't embarrass themselves, but even they can't make sense of their blustering, macho dialogue. It's amazing that screenwriter William Goldman (who wrote such great and genuinely thrilling films as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Marathon Man, All the President's Men, and Misery) left his name attached to this script; there's no sign of his usual skill and intelligence. Madeleine Stowe, a graceful presence in any film, is equally wasted. Directed with a lot of empty flash by Simon West (Con Air). --Bret Fetzer

OK
Pretty good movie. James Woods did a great job (as usual) and John Travolta did a pretty good job. It definitely keeps you 'on the edge' and keeps you interested and guessing until the end....There is one disturbing rape scene that I wish I had known about BEFORE I saw the movie.

Sometimes predictable but an good suspense thriller.
After his 1994 comeback with the excellent Pulp Fiction, that is one of his best films ever. Ever since than, most of his films, after Pulp Fiction were Box Office Hits. In this case, The General`s Daughter is almost a great film but it was a lot of style of filmmaking by director-Simon West(Con Air, the upcoming Tomb Raider) gives a lot of good suspense, some shocking surprises and an impressive cast like-Madeleine Stowe(12 Monkeys), James Cromwell(Babe), Timothy Hutton(The Dark Half), Clarence Williams The Third(Reindeer Games) and James Woods(Any Given Sunday). The Plot:An military investigator Paul Brenner(Travolta) uncovers more than he never imagined, when a young woman was find murder in amry base in Fort MacCallum and she turn out to be the daughter of the general(Cromwell) indeed a powerful man. When the offcials try to hide the movite behind the murder of the general`s daughter and he has help from a co-investigator(Stowe) trying the best they can to solve it before the military and FBI get into the way. This slick thriller is well made with only a few flaws, it was too easy to guess the villian`s identity but thanks to good performances from the cast and some great surprises moments. Based on the novel by Nelson DeMille and Co-Screenplay by William Goldman(Misery).

DVD Special Features are good, with an fine running commentary by the director-West, Deleted Scenes with Commentary and 20 mintues behind the scenes featurette. An fine anamorphic Widescreen (2.35:1) transer Impressive Dolby Digital 5.1 Soundtrack. Grdae:B+. Panavision.

Suspenseful and Engrossing
John Travolta gives a powerhouse performance in this twisty crime story from director Simon West (Tomb Raider, Con Air). It is a story about the brutal murder of Captain Elisabeth Campbell (Leslie Stefanson), who just happens to be the daughter of General Joseph Campbell, a high ranking and very politically visible General. The investigation that follows takes on a life of it's own as CID Officers Paul Brenner (John Travolta) and Sara Sunhil (Madeleine Stowe) uncover the victim's shocking secret life and the even more shocking reason for it.

Things become more dangerous as Brenner and Sunhill uncover more than anyone wants made public and Brenner must use the full powers of his position to shake up the Military structure he is a part of and uncover the truth, no matter the cost. Whether he is a soldier first or a Police Officer may have a bearing on what he does with the truth once he has it in this compelling and complex mystery.

Leslie Stefanson gives a nice performance as the very messed up General's daughter. Her dalliance into S&M with high ranking members on the base becomes sad and heartbreaking as Brenner and Sunhill slowly get closer to the truth, and the real reason she was mudered. James Cromwell (L.A. Confidential) gives another solid performance as the politically ambitious General and Clarence Williams III of Mod Squad fame has a nice turn as his loyal to the death aid.

Everyone from Col. William Kent (Timothy Hutton) to Col. Robert Moore (James Woods) has something to hide in screenwriter William Golden's (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) story. Brennan and Sunhill's relentless pursuit of justice for the General's daughter makes for a terrific time at the movies. The ending may suprise you, as may the reason for the brutal crime and the events that preceeded it.

This is a marvelous Military mystery that works because of the fine performances and the sure handed direction that never lets your interest wane. You'll want to own this one as it begs for repeated viewings. This is a very good film all the way around and one you have to see.

Playing God
Released in VHS Tape by Touchstone Video (08 May, 2001)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Andy Wilson (IV)
Starring: David Duchovny and Timothy Hutton
After his bloody showdown with Brad Pitt's psychopathic redneck in Kalifornia, David Duchovny used an off-season hiatus from The X-Files to star in this 1997 thriller, in which he plays a doctor whose fall from professional grace leads to a dangerous career in the criminal underworld. Having lost his license after drug abuse caused him to lose a patient during surgery, he's recruited into his illegal career by a slimy but charismatic millionaire (Timothy Hutton) whose associates have a way of getting shot all the time. Before long, Duchovny comes to realize the extent of Hutton's evil, and he finds himself caught in a criminal trap that also involves an alluring femme fatale (Angelina Jolie) and a Faustian bargain that could cost him his life. The plot's rather absurd and fairly predictable, but fine performances by Duchovny and especially Hutton (who makes a memorable screen villain) make this stylish thriller intriguingly worthwhile. --Jeff Shannon

Morality Play as Duchovany Plays God
Some reviewers call the premise absurd.... I don't know... I didn't find it to be such a stretch of the imagination. Some one loses their license to be a doctor and gets roped into doctoring for a bad guy... It could happen! I thought Timothy Hutton performed well as well as David Duchovany. Nicely done.

A very enjoyable movie
I would give it five stars because it is my favorite movie of all time, but some would say that it's far from perfect. I really like this movie because the main character, has flaws. It makes it seem more realistic to me when people in movies aren't perfect. It has good camera work that I really like. It makes for some cool shots and I never felt lost when some action was going on. It has a cool car chase, just the right amount of comedy here and there, a decent story, fairly good acting, and some good action! This definatly could have been better, but I think it has just the right combination of things to make it an enjoyable movie that I think anyone that is a fan of action or David Duchovny should definately see. I don't think you'll be dissapointed!

A Hidden Treat
PLAYING GOD never got the theatrical time it deserved. It's a great noir film with good characters, performances, and direction. The story about conterfeiting and a doctor reluctantly hired as a mob doc is quite original, and at the same time, it achieves a great level of humor that is tried but not reached in many crime films. David D's performance is spot-on and he delivers his lines with gusto. Timothy Hutton has so much fun with his role that he eats up every scene he is in. A pre-FARGO Peter Stromare gives a very credible performance as a Russian counterfeiter and Angelina Jolie proves that she is a good actress even at the beginning of her career with the limited role that she is given. However, Hutton overshadows everyone else with his great line delivery and facial expressions. Some of the best lines of the film belong to him, and he gives them very well. Andy Wilson's direction is very good and suspenseful, and some of his more complicated shots work very well. He has a great sense of pacing and it works well for the film. Everyone that made this film should be proud. It is fun, exciting, and more importantly, entertaining as hell. It's everything a crime/noir/comedy should be, which raises it above the bar that has been set.

The Substance of Fire
Released in VHS Tape by Miramax Home Entertainment (09 December, 2003)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Daniel J. Sullivan
The shadow of the Holocaust hangs over Ron Rifkin's debonair publisher, a supremely intelligent but arrogant man who is destroying his tony company with a self-indulgent project. This catalyst for a family crisis unites his children, Sarah Jessica Parker, Timothy Hutton, and Tony Goldwyn, in an effort to save him and their business. There is a strong emotional core to this adapted play, but as past and present collide, the focus shifts uncomfortably from father to son, convincing us that part of the story remained on a cutting room floor. Just watch this for the beautifully shaded performances, especially by Rifkin. --Rochelle O'Gorman
Average review score:

Parent-Children Family Conflict Drama Gets Out-of-Focus
This play-adaptation begins as an interesting family drama. The main character is a holocoust survivor who publishes "serious books" with limited commercial potential. Although the business had been moderately successful, it is now in serious financial difficulty , and his children try to convince him to save the business by publishing a book which has great commercial potential. ..., he refuses and pushes ahead with his current project which is a book on Nazi medical experiments.

So far, this is an interesting conflict between an idealistic, headstrong father, and his more practical children who don't want their inheritance to go down the tubes. Unfortunately, at this point the basic story changes and the father develops a mental disorder (perhaps early signs of senility ). The focus is now on the children and their attempts to shield their father from humiliation and see that he is cared for. This focus on the children is dull, because only the father in this film is a well-developed interesting character; and the introduction of mental illness aborts the initial story conflict. The film seems like two short stories; an interesting one at the beginning, and a dull one in the second half.
