Black Fox:Movie of the Century
I watched the whole series of "Black Fox" today on the Westerns Channel. This is one of the best movies I have ever seen. I can't remember in all of my life seeing a movie as good as this except for "The Rounders" with Glenn Ford and Henry Fonda. I give this movie a 5 star rating because of its morality, determenting factors of determenation and love for all mankind. If you want to see a movie that has more than just violence watch this. This movie contains extreme heart-pumping action, the love everyone has for their family and that good ol' fashioned western heart in its soul.

At Last...authenticity
While to a native Texan the scenery is obviously not Texas, this is the most well-done western in years! The Indians ride like Indians...bareback. Everybody is properly shaggy and not too clean...as it was in my ancestors' days on the prairies. The horses are absolutely beautiful! The acting is really fine...Raoul Trujillo is definitely someone to always see! Totally and highly recommended...even for children. My grandkids loved it, handled the slight rape/sex scenes well (done in good taste but with reality) and the hard use of words for Blacks was realistic and brought out the true prejudice of the times. And watch the draft horses pull the wagon with the gatling gun!

Great movie
This is a good movie which tells about the disaster that prejustice and hate brings. It also tells about the injustice and cruelty done against the Native Americans. It is amovie about hate, friendship, love, prejustice and much more.

Wild Bill
Released in VHS Tape by Kino Video (13 May, 1997)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: Todd Robinson
As a restless young man early in World War I, William A. Wellman joined the French Foreign Legion, and then became an ace American pilot with the famed Lafayette Escadrille. After being shot down and suffering grave injuries, the war hero returned to civilian life in Hollywood in the 1920s, soon becoming known as Wild Bill for his maverick perspective and two-fisted approach to directing. As the excellent documentary Wild Bill: Hollywood Maverick details, Wellman's insistence on realistic filmmaking resulted in the still-breathtaking aerial choreography in his breakthrough film, 1927's Wings, the very first Best Picture Oscar winner. His other films, especially war pictures such as The Story of G.I. Joe, Beau Geste, and Battleground, display equal parts authenticity, grit, and humanity. Wellman also broke out of war-picture confines to have huge success with films such as A Star Is Born (for which he won his only Oscar, for cowriting the script), the screwball comedy Nothing Sacred, and the meditative antilynching drama The Ox-Bow Incident. Wild Bill traces Wellman's extraordinary career, highlighted by interviews with such varied Wellman stars as Robert Mitchum, Buddy Rogers, Burgess Meredith, Clint Eastwood, and Nancy Davis Reagan. Fans of Hollywood history and film in general won't want to miss this fascinating portrait of a true iconoclast. --Anne Hurley

I WISH I HAD 5 FRIENDS JUST LIKE WILD BILL
This amazing film director was before my time but I wished I would have discovered him much sooner than I did. I rented a movie called "The Next Voice You Hear" from the classic section of the video store. It was a great film with a different style than most films I had seen. It was about the source of the greatest peace of mind on earth. It impacted me long after I had finished watching it. So following up on that, I bought this documentary about his life, only to find out what a great man he was along with being one of the most acclaimed directors of all time.

During high school, his rough style at playing ice hockey, caught the eye of actor Douglas Fairbanks. On that day, Wellman made a resounding impact on Fairbanks, and that changed the course of Wellman's life. Wellman got the nickname "Wild Bill" in France, during World War I. The French gave him that name for extremely aggressive actions as a bomber pilot.

After the war, he contacted Douglas Fairbanks, asking about employment in films. After being given a role in a film, he became disgusted with himself on screen. He then asked if he could become a movie director. While working as an assistant director for director Bernard Durning on a film, he shot some footage for 2 weeks. Wellman filled in for Durning, who went on a drinking binge and could not go on with his job. The studio was more impressed with the footage Wellman shot than Durning's footage. Durning told the studio, you should make Wellman a director.

Films about the war were popular at the time. A film called "Wings" came along, and because of Wellman's experience as a war pilot, he was given the job of director. The film had a cameo appearance by Gary Cooper, which boosted his career for the future. The movie, Wings (1927), won the first ever Academy Award for best picture.

Wellman was a director for 35 years. He directed more than 70 movies. His films include Public Enemy (1931), A Star Is Born (1937), Beau Geste (1939), The Ox-Bow Incident (1943), The Story Of G.I. Joe (1945), Yellow Sky (1948), Battleground (1949) and The High and the Mighty (1954). His work received 32 Academy Award nominations, 4 were for best picture and 3 for best director. His only Oscar would be for "A Star Is Born". The Directors Guild gave him their award of the highest honor, the D.W. Griffith Award For Lifetime Achievement. Right before he died, he told his son not to feel sorry for him because he had lived the life of a 100 men. I was deeply touched by this great documentary of a man who lived his life to the fullest, with incredible style. James Garner said about Wellman, he gave better than he got, he was a very strong personality.

Lloyd
Released in VHS Tape by Monarch Home Video (23 July, 2002)
MPAA Rating: PG (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Hector Barron
Starring: Todd Bosley and Brendon Ryan Barrett
In the wake of public school shootings, Lloyd provides an unsettling glimpse into the painful world of a sixth-grade boy who is picked on incessantly by school bullies. Problem is, the film is supposed to be a coming-of-age comedy. While it doesn't condone such bullying behavior, it passes it off as typical adolescent antics, and rarely does an adult intervene. The result is a disappointing 72 minutes of vulgarity and gallows humor. Todd Bosley (Little Giants) plays the title character, a lanky, insecure kid who ends up in a special education class with other subpar students, Troy and Carla. Lloyd's difficulties multiply when a beautiful redhead named Tracey joins the class; he is at once smitten in a one-sided infatuation. To win Tracey's favor, Lloyd must contend with the school's brazen intimidator, a hunky rebel named Storm. In his quest to gain friends and an ounce of coolness, Lloyd needs a miracle--or perhaps a bit of magic--which comes from an unlikely magician, played by Tom Arnold in a cameo appearance. The deplorable plot isn't helped by a slew of clichéd adult characters, including teachers portrayed as mean-spirited numskulls and parents as insensitive dolts. A search for the film's redeeming merits is futile, despite an earnest attempt by Arnold to pull it out of the dregs. Parents can expect dissing, profanity, potty talk, and lots of impudent behavior. --Lynn Gibson

Lloyd
I've never written a review before, but after reading the Editor's comments, I had to reply. I don't know if the reviewer is come kind of extreme, obsessive, political correctness zealot, but my family, which includes 8 and 10 year old girls, really enjoyed this movie. It was funny, and in many ways true to life. True, a couple of the sceens with the bully showed him as mean spirited, but that's life. This actually gave me a great opportunity to discuss this type of behavior with my children and discuss how to best avoid and/or deal with it. Unfortunately, in the real world, things like this actually happen. Very enjoyable movie, definitely recommended.

A True Family Comedy!
My family viewed this movie in the theatre as well as on vhs. Our family; five kids & two adults, enjoyed Lloyd very much. It is not often enough that a family can go to the theatre or sit in front of the TV together without the fear of nudity or vulgarity popping up through the screen. It was true, clean fun for my kids, and a few memories of the issues regarding kids in school, since school began, that we all face. The difference here is, the perspective comes from the kids. Also, when viewing these troubles, the kids can see it from the outside, possibly more clearly.
I don't agree with your reviiewer--not one sentence!! And that could take another 1,000 words. But the point is, WE TRULY ENJOYED THE FILM !!

What movie did your reviewer see?
After reading your reviewer's summary of the movie Lloyd, I'm thinking she might have been watching two things at once. Her review of this often funny and, also, touching movie bears no resemblence to the film I enjoyed. This is a wonderful film for anyone who has ever been an outsider. We may not have all triumphed in the end as Lloyd does, but he reminds us all that it's possible. Lloyd is a great role model of perseverance-- and of overcoming unhappy circumstances with creativity and humor. Ignore the "official" review and buy this for your family. (And talk about it with your kids, too.)

moving, and emoitonal
finally available on DVD, quality is good, though just a transfer from original VHS source. Still, a surprisingly unheralded drama about a NY pyschiatrist (Reiser) who, diagnosed with leukemia and in need of a bone marrow donor, goes in search of his biologial family in Liverpool upon learning he is adopted. Well acted, well written drama (though with a good dose of humor) and literally made me sob. Have watched it numerous times on tape and cable and it keeps sucking you in with the story and its endearing characters, especially a good Julie Walters (Educating Rita).
Can't go wrong with this purchase!

Wonderful, Sensitive, Humorous, Riveting, Fantastic Movie
There aren't enough good words in my vocabulary to describe this movie. What can I say except that STRANGE RELATIONS is my favorite movie of all time and I can't stop recommending it to everyone. If you want a movie that will make you laugh and cry, a movie where you can't take your eyes off the screen for fear of missing a single moment, or a movie that teaches you to look for what's really important in life (Love and Family) then you must see this movie !
The acting is superb. Julie Walters even won a BAFTA award for her role as the lively mother, Shelia. And Paul Reiser was so believable that you couldn't help but sympathize with his character of Dr. Jerry Lipman. Add the rest of the all-star cast - Warm and Funny George Wendt, Beautiful Amy Robbins, and A Touching Olympia Dukasis and things couldn't get any better !
But what really stands out in this movie is the writing. Mr. Tim Kazurinsky has done a fantastic job. The story is touching, funny and even surprising with an unforeseen twist at the end. And with such character development, you end up feeling like you know this wonderful, diverse family and love each one of them.
Kudos to everyone involved with STRANGE RELATIONS (aka MY BEAUTIFUL SON as seen in the U.K.) GREAT MOVIE !!!!

Funny, yet touching
I caught this movie on cable and couldn't turn it off. I'd never heard of it until then. One of the few movies to bring a tear to my eye and keep me laughing, too. Hard to believe that this movie has been around since 2001, packed with recognizable stars, yet I never heard of it before. Highly recommended, but some of the language is not what I'd like my younger children to hear. My wife and I have watched it several times and still love it. Can't wait to get it on DVD.

The Rock
Released in VHS Tape by Hollywood Pictures (13 August, 2002)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Michael Bay
Starring: Sean Connery, Nicolas Cage, and Ed Harris
Between his high-octane debut, Bad Boys, and 1998's wannabe blockbuster Armageddon, hotshot director Michael Bay forged his dubious reputation with this crowd-pleasing action extravaganza. In it a psychotically disgruntled war hero (Ed Harris) seizes the island prison of Alcatraz and threatens to wage chemical warfare against nearby San Francisco unless the government publicly recognizes the men who were killed under Harris's top-secret command. Nicolas Cage plays the biochemist who teams up with the only man ever to have escaped from Alcatraz (Sean Connery) in an attempt to foil Harris's terrorist scheme. As one might expect, what follows is an action-packed barrage of bullets, bodies, and climactic confrontations, replete with enough plot contrivances to give even the most jaded action fan cause for alarm. It's a load of hooey, but the cast is obviously having a grand old time, and there's enough wit to make the recycled action sequences tolerable. If you're ordering this movie on DVD, be careful with the volume knobs on your home-theater sound systems, because The Rock could cause partial hearing loss and structural damage to your home. --Jeff Shannon

im Sean Connery and im on The Rock
a top notch action thriller is one of the best action movies of 1996. its about Ed Harris and hes fed up with crap so he organizes a team and they hold up Alcatraz because he's going to launcha missle that'll kill a lot of people. Nicolas Cage, with Sean Connery(a man who knows Alcatraz like he knows his foes), Michael Biehn and a team of professionals go to The Rock and try to get the missles and stop Harris from killing innocent people. some stupid oneliners but otherwise its great with a car chase, missles flying, people eating toxic green balls. it has everything a action movie cooks up. theres a great team of other actors like William Forsythe, John Spencer, Vanessa Marcil, Tony Todd, Bookem Woodbine, John C. Mcginley, Steve Harris and Anthony Clark(who is gay and funny in this movie) that cook up those ingredients and give us a good ride

Action with a capital A
Never a dull moment in this is a great action flick. This may be the best of its genre in a long, long time. Jerry Bruckheimer has outdone himself. The movie opens with the two great scenes, including the well planned (and almost perfectly implemented) break in at an Army arsenal and the disarming of a terrorist bomb by Cage at work. The action does not let up until the final climactic struggles.

Great casting, with Sean Connery as a political prisoner (and former member of the British elite Special Air Service, the only man alive to break out of Alcatraz). Add Nicholas Cage as FBI agent (and self-described biochemical "super freak", who of course is grossly overmatched among these hard guys. Their foil is Ed Harris, who is great as a highly decorated military officer, disillusioned by the betrayal of his men during Desert Storm, and his cadre of soldiers. The supporting roles include David Morse, John McGinley and Greg Collins as his loyal soldiers, and John Spencer as a less than honorable FBI director They are all joined at Alcatraz prison, taken over by Harris and his men. They hold a few hostages (irrelevant to the story), along with rockets filled with deadly poison gas. Unless the government pays the big bucks, they will unleash their deadly toxins. Only a sixty year old Connery can get them onto the Rock, with the support of a group of Navy Seals and fighter planes to save the day.

Of course, they do.

Not a dull moment in this movie.

Michael Bay's Best
Only Bad Boys comes close to this action extravaganza about a group of marines who take hostages on Alcatraz and threaten the San Francisco Bay Area with poison gas rockets. Sean Connery, Nick Cage and Ed Harris are in fine form supported by a great ensemble of actors, including the always excellent David Morse. This is Michael Bay's best. It has a good story (never mind some of the plot holes this is a movie!), tons of action and great shots that make it look very slick.

The DVD presented by those generous folks at Criterion is pretty good. The video transfer is exceptionally good with only a few artefacts here and there. The sound comes in DTS and Dolby Digital and both are loud and make full use of the surrounds. The score by Hans Zimmer just roars into action.

The special features are extensive with a commentary and several interesting documentaries. It is a pretty extensive (not more so than Armageddon) 2 disc set with a very interesting commentary on disc 1. The Hollywood Gunplay feature is one of the more interesting ones that deserve a mention

This movie with a running time over 2 hours goes by at a blistering pace. I highly recommend the Criterion Collection set of The Rock.
