Without a doubt - the best of the best
Whoopie is just "Whoopie" - tells it like it is, means it, lives by it, emulates it, and shares it through her comedic excellence. This particular video is Whoopie at her best, passing on her wisdom through the eyes of a "true" American, the real America we all live in. Don't miss it.

Hilarious & Thought Provoking!
I am a Whoopi Goldberg fan from way back. I enjoyed her previous video Whoopi: Live On Broadway in which she introduces us to a host of characters, one of them Fontaine. To see her take Fontaine to the next level, clean and sober, with a whole new take on life is truly brilliant. I'm glad I had the chance to see it. Once again Whoopi has done it. She always manages to make you laugh and make you think at the same time.

at her best
This is whoopi at her best. What happens when you let whoopi Goldberg loose on a stage on broadway? Some of the best avante garde theatre pieces ever. Whoopi does five different characters and tells their story from their point of view. Each story is funny, heart warming, and though provoking. Do not miss this.

Whoopi's talent at its best, really!
If you can get your hands on this out of print jem, do it, NOW! You are going to laugh (a lot), you are going to cry (trust me), and in the end you are going to be mad at Whoopi for having wasted her amazing talent in movies like Bogus, Burglar, and Fatal Beauty (among others). Also, you are going to wish they bring it back on DVD, it's definately the kind of performance you are going to want to keep and watch years from now.

A Must See! Whoopi's First and Best Work!
Whoopi was discovered after writing and performing this piece in a L.A. club. Speilberg cast her in Color Purple after this and you could see why! I PRAY it goes to DVD soon!

Powerful Film!
This movie takes you on such an emotional journey. It's difficult not to become drawn into this film because of its powerful story and characters. It's an awesome story of determination. Not to mention, it's a histrically significant film as well. Anyone interested in stories of social justice should see this film. The characters are extra ordinary and the stories will take you places you'll never have to experience in real life. It's a great movie to watch, but bring tissue!

EVERY CHILD/HUMAN SHOULD WATCH THIS MOVIE
THE MOVIE AND THE MUSIC IS SO POWERFUL THAT YOU ARE READY TO GET UP AND GO OUT TO THE STREETS AND SCREAM FROM THE TOP OF YOUR LUNGS FOR THE PEOPLE OF THE WORLD TO WAKE UP AND FIGHT FOR THE JUSTICE OF ALL PEOPLE!!!
... ALSO, WATCH MALCOLM X, BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE, ...

EMOTIONAL -SENSITIVE - INSPIRING
I first stumbled across this viodeo in a library in London. I have watched it time and time again. Its content are not fiction but reflections on the past lives of South African Blacks and their struggle for survival and liberation under the white apartheid regime.

If I were Black South African, I would have died alongside those freedom fighters who are not here today. This video can make you to shed tears whether you are white or black.

Injustice and maltreatment of human by fellow human can be counter productive. Watch Sarafina, own your copy and pay attention to Africa's continuous problems. Its about time the imparialists and colonialist feel guilty and sorry for their sins,
God bless Africa.

Clara's Heart
Released in VHS Tape by Warner Studios (30 August, 1999)
MPAA Rating: PG-13 (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Robert Mulligan
Starring: Whoopi Goldberg and Michael Ontkean
One from the prefab feel-good section, about the relationship between what's now called a child-care-giver (and used to be called a nanny) and the young boy she looks after. In this case, the nanny is a Jamaican named Clara, played with appropriate warmth and dialect by Whoopi Goldberg--and her charge is played by Neil Patrick Harris, who would go on to become Doogie Howser. This one is strictly for the bleeding-heart set, with Clara as the all-knowing source of wisdom in a crazy world, enabling the go-go life of her yuppie employers, while she opens their little boy's eyes to how the other half lives, even teaching him Jamaican patois. This film doesn't just tug at the heartstrings--it attempts to yank them clean out of the chest. --Marshall Fine

Love Whoopi Goldberg
I am a big fan of Whoopi. I've seen just about every movie she's done. One of my favorites is this one, Clara's Heart. Very good film. I wish they had it in DVD, but before there was DVD there was VHS, so if I want it, I shouldn't really complain. But I do recommend this movie.

IT WILL BREAK YOURS...
This is a beautifully textured film about Clara Mayfield, a Jamaican care-giver, and David Hart, the troubled young boy who is her sole charge. He is the son of Leona and Bill Hart, two self-absorbed individuals whose marriage is crumbling all around them.

Clara takes care of David and with her warm, motherly personality gives him the succor he craves, helping him with the pain of being emotionally bereft. He, in turn, loves her unconditionally and is even given to speaking patois, cementing the strong bond between them. Without his knowing it, he helps her to come to terms with her own pain and terrible secret.

Whoopi Goldberg is a wonderful actress who gives rich dimension to the role of Clara Mayfield, infusing her with an intelligence, wisdom, and warmth that is palpable. Just beneath the surface, however, one senses a tremendous desolation that becomes clear at the end, when her terrible secret is revealed. Whoopi also captures the rhythm of the lilting Jamaican accent and gets the patois down pat. It is one of her most memorable roles.

Neil Patrick Harris is terrific in the role of David, making his love for Clara believable and touching. His integration into Clara's Jamaican world is also moving, as he seeks to find a place he can truly call home. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and he even learns to speak a respectable Jamaican patois. All this, however, cannot stop his parents from claiming him in the end.

Kathleen Quinlan is excellent as the coolly detached, yuppie mother, while Michael Ontkean resonates as the ambitious and driven yuppie father. They epitomize the kind of parents who are well meaning but too self-absorbed to see the effect that their actions have on their children or that their children have emotional needs of their own that need attention.

All in all, this is a sensational movie and one in which Whoopi Goldberg leaves her mark. It is a film lovingly directed by Robert Mulligan (To Kill a Mockingbird, Up the Down Staircase, The Other) and should be seen by all discerning film lovers. Bravo!

Clara's Heart
Wonderfully moving film. If someone can help me track down the music to the movie- especially the opening and closing theme. . . Absolutely moving. . . Please e-mail me at: smbbfs@aol.com

Soapdish
Released in VHS Tape by Paramount Studio (24 August, 1994)
MPAA Rating: PG-13 (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Michael Hoffman
Starring: Sally Field and Kevin Kline
Though this movie did decent box-office business, it was never as funny as it should have been or as clever as it thought it was. The film is set behind the scenes at The Sun Also Sets, a soap opera starring Sally Field that is suffering a ratings slump. To lure the audience back, the producers resurrect a dead character, played by Kevin Kline, with whom Field was once a lover of but is now at odds (and helped exile to dinner theater, where he is first glimpsed playing Willy Loman). Written by Andrew Bergman and Robert Harling, the script has its funny moments but never manages to string them together, despite a cast that includes Whoopi Goldberg, Robert Downey Jr., Cathy Moriarty, and Carrie Fisher. --Marshall Fine
Average review score:

Laugh, Laugh Laugh
Why can't funny movies like this be appreciated instead of downgraded? This is a soap opera set in a soap opera, and better than any soap opera written. Obviously it's a spoof of soap operas and is well written and acted. Sure the acting is over the top but it's a spoof. Sally Fields is great as a Susan Lucci character. Kevin Kline is really over the top. Look closely as Teri Hatcher plays one of her first roles as a bit nurse in the soap opera with one great line directed at Kevin Kline.

It reminds you of another great soap opera spoof, Tootsie which is also one of my favorites. That was more of a love story where this is written for pure laughs and is very successful.

Funny, satirical, soap opera farce
This is a very funny movie, for it is one of those situations of the real soap opera taking place BEHIND the scenes of the actual soap opera. it's a little bit like the undeservedly ill-fated show 'Sports Night', showing the funny sort of backstage, 'real life' drama happening behind the cameras and all that. The movie also employs a few soap opera -isms into the plot, loads of backstabbing, manipulation, deception, hidden secrets, misunderstandings, betrayel, but all in a very farcical & comedic type of format that works extremely well. Plus it showcases the extraordinary comedic talents of all of the film's stars, including Sally Fields as a sort of neurotic Susan Lucci, Kevin Kline (who is simply extraordinary) Whoopi Goldberg, Cathy Moriarty, Teri Hatcher, Elizabeth Shue, and Robert Downey Jr. check this movie out, you'll love it.

Hi-Lo, Backbeat Heaven
"Soapdish" works on so many frequencies simultaneously that you can watch it over and over and find some new kink to laugh at every time (not to mention bits you come to treasure). It's vulgarity is only surpassed by its sophistication.
And what a phenomenal cast! Kevin Kline got his Oscar for "Wanda", but this movie is even stronger proof positive that comedy brings out his genius. See Sally Field do a Jack Nicholson and examine her own brain! See Robert Downey, Jr. confront his sexuality (or not)! See Elizabeth Shue look like Tweety! Not the half of it, plus jokes at the expense of William Styron; who could ask for more?
Go - Enjoy!

Sister Act
Released in VHS Tape by Touchstone Video (17 December, 1996)
MPAA Rating: PG (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Emile Ardolino
Starring: Whoopi Goldberg and Maggie Smith
Whoopi Goldberg plays a Reno lounge singer who hides out as a nun when her villainous boyfriend (Harvey Keitel) goes gunning for her. Maggie Smith is the mother superior who has to cope with Whoopi's unorthodox behavior, but the cute script turns the tables and shows how the latter energizes the stodgy convent with song and attitude. A real crowd-pleaser and a perfect vehicle for Goldberg, this is a happy experience all around. --Tom Keogh
Average review score:

Singing Praise To God
In a tailor-made role, Whoopi Goldberg stars as a Motown lounge-singer in Reno who witness the murder of a chauffeur at the hands of her married boyfriend and mobster, Harvey Kietel. When she goes to the police, they need to hide her some place safe, and they find a place where no one would think to look for the mistress-singer ... a convent. Maggie Smith also stars as the Mother Superior who agrees to shelter the newly christened Sister Mary Clarence, and in the hands of Whoopi, you can guess what happens to their woefully inadequate choir. This is one of those films it's hard not to like. The role was made for Whoopi, and she plays it for all it's worth. The nuns are all cute, the fish out of water story has built in laughs, and the music is terrific - really gets the toes tapping. There's nothing deep or earth shattering here, and thank God for that. It's simply a film about singing out your joy and serving others. In other words, it's a feel good movie and a lot of fun.

Sister Power!
Sister Act can easily be classified as one of the 90's better comedies filled with laughter that can surpass the likes of most movies out today. Whoopi Goldberg is as always hilarious and portrays Delores Van Cartier, a naive lounge singer who's boyfriend is a married mafioso (but she doesn't know this), and later she witnesses a murder commited by him which caused her to run to the police, who in turn stashed her in a church in San Francisco against her will. Mother Superior (Maggie Smith) takes her into the church, and discuises her as a nun with a phony alias: Sister Mary Clarence. The trouble comes later when Mother Superior doesn't like the decision to transform the out-of-tune (she improves their vocal skill) nun's choir into a funky retro 60's girl group. If you want a hilarious comedy, filled with laughter a minute, I will recommend this.

WHATTA NUN MADNESS!
This has to be one of the most hilarious movie ever!, I remember this from my childhood, and I definetly still enjoy it today!, what a great movie, a lounge singer Dolores Van Cartier hidding in a convent as Sister Mary Clarence hahahaha!, whoo hooo!, who came with this idea, a comedic genious!, all the movie surrounded by 60's music another great fact, this movie is timeless, classic, and a must have in your collection!
